Lot: 98A Unique and Fine Victorian collection of 4 Lawn Tennis rackets, Press and book , which were the personal possessions of Ethel Maude Le Marchant (1872-1957) and her siblings Anna (Annie), Edward, Eliza, Emma and Evelyn, as immortalised in the book A Victorian Rector and Nine Old Maids' (2005) by Michael Boyes. (A copy of which is included). The 4 rackets consist of: A Slazenger Demon (c1900), retailed from the premises of the Victorian England cricket player (and Sports Outfitter) William Albert Woof (1858-1937) in Cheltenham. This racket has the name of Ethel Le Marchant written in ink on the handle. Some broken strings but otherwise in excellent condition; A second, earlier, Slazenger Demon (c1895), retailed by John S. Friskney of 23, Pittville Street, Cheltenham. The throat of the racket has been stamped with the initials E. (Ethel) M.L.M. A fine frame with many broken strings; An earlier The Pittville' wide head lawn tennis racket, again by Friskney. A very nice frame stamped at the throat E.L.M.'; The fourth racket has a fine, early, wide frame (c1895) with thick stringing (some of which are broken) but does not have a retailer's or maker's mark. Written in ink on the wedge is the name Annie'. The press is a robust free-standing oak panelled example with brass fittings and three stout screws' and three dividers, enabling it to hold 4 rackets. It has no maker's name. The book is in mint

condition. Containing 228 pages with 156 photographs of the family, her 9 sisters (and 5 brothers) and at least 14 showing Ethel Maude Le Marchant in particular (including 4 showing them on their own and the rectory tennis courts at Little Rissington). The book is a fascinating account of Victorian country life and their experiences together in the English Cotswolds, and relates many an afternoon playing tennis and other sports. (They were members of Stow Tennis Club). It also reveals their journeys to and from nearby Cheltenham on their bicycles, when, no doubt, this very tennis equipment would have been purchased. The author has tracked down a wealth of letters, diaries, journals and photographs and leads the reader through a fascinating journey of Victorian Cotswold life. Bournemouth British Hard Court Championships, Italy Championships and Roland Garros is titled Tennis Highlights' produced by Associated British Pathe comprising black and white 16mm film with sound, and a commentary by Raymond Glendenning. The opening scene features preparations for the Bournemouth British Hard-Court Championships (1953), player name cards, boxes of new Dunlop lawn tennis balls, etc. Tony Mottram and Geoff Paish take on Ampon (in long trousers) and Deyro from the Philippines, but the doubles Championship is secured by the visitors. We then see Angela Mortimer against holder Doris Hart. Morea (Argentina) versus Ampon proved to be the men's singles finalists. The action then moves to the Italian Championships in Rome, Drobny against Hoad in the final. Drobny and Patty then play Hoad and Rosewall in the doubles final. (All four players dressed entirely in white!) We then see the Champions with their trophies. The ladies final featured Little Mo Connolly against Doris Hart. Then over to Roland Garros Stadium at Paris. Once again, Hart and Connolly contest the final. Good picture quality and excellent sound throughout. Bud Collins introduces the action where Rosewall (37 years-old) and Emerson (35) have reached the quarter-final from a 16 man field. (The 16 leaders on the Championship of tennis tour. - $10,000 prize money to the winner!) We see all the action from the third and final set, with many rallies re-played in slow-motion. Lot: 1081954 Warwickshire and Davis Cup tennis film: comprising 8 mm fascinating amateur (faded) colour silent film which was taken from the spectator stands a high level can diagonally across doubles court. A large attendance of spectators enjoy clips of a doubles match which is obviously some importance hence the umpire and ball girls. The match appears to be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham "supported by valuable information on the box". One of the players very much resembles Bobby Wilson and the date on the box is reliable this may well be the case. The winning doubles pair is seen being presented with trophies, this suggests that it records a major Warwickshire open doubles tournament in 1954. The next tennis scene (taken from a much higher view position at the end of the court) shows a tennis court with hundreds of spectators in the stands and the players appearing. This would appear to be a recording of the Davis Cup match at the same venue. Then we see some singles action taking place, a tall left-hander (Billy Knights?) serves from the near end, the crowd applauds as he wins a rally. We also see television gantry with two cameras evident as well as the faces of commentators. Two further opponents appear presumably to play the second rubber. Lot: 396A rare cabinet card signed by the legend rugby player Arthur Joseph "Monkey" Gould - mounted on the original photographers cabinet card by AVG Taylor Wesley Chambers Newport and signed in ink "Yours very truly Arthur J Gould" - overall 6.5 x 4.25" Note Gould's playing career spanned from1882 - 1897 was the most capped Welsh Centre until Steve Fenwick beat the record at Lansdowne Road in 1980 he played 27 times for Wales ending his career against England on 9 January 1897 and it was the 18th time at Gould had captained Wales and this record stood until broken by Ieuan Evans in 1995. He was a superb all-round player and was considered the most outstanding player of his time and first superstar of Welsh rugby. He led Wales to the country's first home Nations championship and triple Crown titles in 1893 - his playing career spanned from 1882 - 1897 and by then Gould was a household name throughout Britain and a testimonial fund had been started with contributions being made by the public. invitation to Peter Burge (Australia Capt) from Members of The Olympic Club in San Francisco, the privileges of the club for a period of two weeks dated February 6, 1909 - following a stopover in US on the return trip to Australia after the completing the tour to the northern hemisphere Note Peter Burge (1884 - 1956) was an Australian rugby footballer and coach. He represented his country in rugby league and rugby union, playing rugby union with South Sydney in 1904 and was selected (20yrs old) for the Metropolis (City) representative side to play against the Great Britain tourists. When the All Blacks toured in 1905 Burge played against them firstly for Metropolis and then in a New South Wales side. Burge, a lock claimed a total of three international rugby caps for Australia. In two of these matches, he served as captain. His debut game was against New Zealand, at Sydney, on 20 July 1907. He made two rugby union tours, to New Zealand in 1905 with the first full Australian team and later on the epic 1908-09 Australia rugby union tour of the British Isles and France under captain Paddy Moran. What we have here is a genuine printed brochure - only two were completed, one for Keith Wiggins the Team Principle and one as an accurate print reference when going to press.
