Need a quick accessory for dinner tonight? Or do you have a few fabric scraps laying around that need a good project? Try this headband tutorial, which shows you how to create a twisted fabric band that you can use in future sewing projects. Use this technique to add twisted bands to garments, bags and more.

• 1 yard fabric

• 20inchesof⅞"-wideribbon

• 20inchesof¾"-widedouble-sidedfusibletape

• 6inchesof⅜"-wideelastic

• Leatherscraps

• Fabricglue

• Temporaryfabricmarker

• Iron and ironing board

• Press cloth

Sewthetwolongedgestogetherusinga¼"-wideseamallowance.

Cuta6"-wideby20"-longstripoffabricon the bias*.Alongbothlongedges,useatemporaryfabricmarkertomakeamarkeveryinchalongthestrip’slength.

*Fabricmustbecutalongthebiasforthetwisttoworkproperly.

Withrightsidestogether,foldthefabricstripinhalflengthwise.Shifttheshortendtothefirstinch-markasshown.Pinthetwolongedgestogether,keepingtheinch-marksaligned.

Placea¾"-widestripofdouble-sidedfusibletapealongtheheadbandseam.Positionastripof⅞"-wideribbonontop.Pressthroughalllayerstofusetheribbonontotheheadband.

Presstheseamallowanceopen.

Turntheheadbandrightsideout.Foldandtwisttheheadbanduntiltheseamisinastraightline.Pinthestriptotheironingboardasyouworktoholditinplace.Presswithapressclothtocreasethefabricinplace.

Machine-basteacrossbothshortends of the headband to hold the pleatsinplace.

Laytheheadbandoutonyourworksurface.Cutofftheendstomaketheheadband16"long.

Pleat the fabric at each end by hand sothatitisthesamewidthastheribbon.Pininplace.

Placeasecondpieceofleatherontopofthefirst,sandwichingalloftherawfabricandribbonedgesinside.Glueinplace.

Cutfourmatchingpiecesofleather.Makethem1¼"-wideattheirtopand⅞"-wideattheirbase.Makethem1¼"long.

Cuta6"-longpieceof⅜"-wideelastic.Layoneleatherpiecefacedownonyourworksurface.Placeoneendoftheheadbandontopofthewiderendoftheleatherpiece.Place the elastic at the leather piece’sshorterend.Gluethepiecesinplaceasshown.
