The Twins Community Fund, in partnership with Great River Energy, announce the 2008 Play Ball! Minnesota Youth Clinics. Formerly known as the Twins Youth Clinics, the clinics provide youth the opportunity to enhance their baseball and softball skills, while also hearing positive messages about staying in school and away from drugs and alcohol.

A total of 37 communities throughout the Upper Midwest will host free clinics this summer.

Clinics are open to boys and girls ages 6 to 16 and are

divided into two 90-minute sessions; the first for 6 to 9-year-olds and the second for 10 to 16-year-olds. Clinics focus on hitting, fielding and throwing. Parents are encouraged to participate with their children.

The program was created in 1961 by longtime Twins scout Angelo Giuliani. Since then more than one million Upper Midwest and Southwest Florida youth have participated in a Youth Clinic.

The fourth annual Minnesota Youth Baseball and Softball Conference was held on Saturday, April 12 at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis. The conference, presented by Play Ball! Minnesota and the Twins Community Fund, was an opportunity for coaches, administrators and volunteers to learn from top instructors about important aspects of the game.

Minnesota Twins alumni, Twins front office personnel and Play Ball! Minnesota members were on hand to present and lead breakout sessions. Participants learned to teach infield skills from former Twins Scott Leius and Al Newman as well as catching skills from another Twins alumnus, Tim Laudner. John Tschida, women’s softball coach at the University of St. Thomas, spoke about coaching softball pitching skills, while Twins batting practice pitcher Eric Lovdahl presented on baseball pitching skills.

Hall of Famers Rod Carew and Paul Molitor were also in attendance, teaching breakout sessions as well as participating in an audience Q&A session. During the Q&A, the men reflected on the coaches who positively affected their playing career, their work as coaches during Twins spring training, and their memories of playing ball as youth themselves.

Play Ball! Minnesota is a collaboration of youth baseball and softball organizers working together to promote and improve baseball and softball. Visit www.playballmn.com to get playing tips from Twins players, learn about upcoming events or to find a youth baseball or softball league in your area.

TwinsFest 2008 is Third Largest in Event’s History

The Minnesota Twins announced in January that TwinsFest 2008 attracted 30,483 fans to the Metrodome, the third highest TwinsFest attendance in the event’s history.

Presented by Dodge and your local Dodge Dealers, TwinsFest is an annual fundraiser for the Minnesota Twins Community Fund.

TwinsFest 2008 featured more than 50 current players and coaches along with former Twins greats including Tony Oliva, Harmon Killebrew and Rod Carew. Twins fans had the opportunity to meet their favorite players and get autographs, tour the Twins clubhouse, and audition to sing the national anthem at a Twins home game. Other event highlights included sports memorabilia silent and live auctions, information about the new Twins ballpark, and youth baseball clinics.

Fort Myers, Fla. and Hammond Stadium have served as home to Minnesota Twins’ Spring Training for 18 years. In 2008, the Twins celebrated this long partnership with a variety of community events.

The Twins kicked off the new year with the Southwest Florida Winter Caravan. In January, players Jesse Crain, Carmen Cali, Tommy Watkins, radio announcer John Gordon and mascot T.C. visited fans of all ages at a senior center and school while also spending time with children and adults at area hospitals.

In the following weeks, children filled the ball fields of Lee County parks for free Twins baseball skills clinics hosted by Twins coaches and minor league players.

In February, the Twins in conjunction with Lee Cancer Care, hosted a celebrity golf tournament at Verandah Golf Club. More than 250 golfers – including more than 30 Twins players, coaches and front office staff - participated in the event, which included a dinner and silent and live auctions. The tournament raised approximately $100,000 for Lee Cancer Care in Fort Myers.

Twins players also took part in a Sunday afternoon bowling event supporting Habitat For Humanity in southwest Florida.

During the Twins home spring training games, local non-profit groups were invited to fund raise for their respective organizations.

The Minnesota Twins Community Fund and Play Ball! Minnesota are now accepting nominations for the 2008 Play Ball! Minnesota Coaches Award.

The Play Ball! Minnesota Coaches Award honors youth baseball and softball coaches who work to provide a positive youth athletic experience for their players. Two honorees will be selected each month between April and September. Each winner will receive four tickets to a Twins home game, a pre-game recognition ceremony and a Twins jacket.

From the monthly award recipients, two coaches will be selected at the end of the year for the “Coach of the Year” Award, and will receive round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations for two to Las Vegas.

To be eligible, a nominee must have actively coached a full season of youth baseball or softball in Minnesota within the last two years. Nomination forms for the Play Ball! Minnesota Coaches Award are available on the Play Ball! Minnesota Web site at www.playballmn.com.

The 17th annual Twins Autograph Party is scheduled for Saturday, June 21, on the Qwest Metrodome Plaza prior to the 6:10 p.m. game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sponsored by Spire Federal Credit Union, the Autograph Party will feature the 2008 Minnesota Twins along with former Twins greats for a day of family fun.

Autograph Party festivities include autographs from current and former players, live and silent auctions of sports memorabilia, free interactive games, food, music and other family–focused activities.

An autograph card, available for purchase in advance or on

the day of the event, is required to receive as many auto-graphs as possible during the player autograph sessions.

Autograph cards will be available for purchase in May. To purchase an autograph card, visit us on-line at www.twinsbaseball.com/autograph, or visit Twins Pro Shops in Apple Valley, Minnetonka or Roseville. Cards can also be purchased in person at the Twins Metrodome ticket office or by calling 612.33-Twins or 1.800.33.Twins. All other activities are free and open to the public.

Proceeds from the Twins Autograph Party benefit the Twins Community Fund and charitable organizations designated by the Minnesota Twins Wives Organization.

The Twins Youth Baseball/Softball Training Camps provide Upper Midwest boys and girls ages 8 to 18 with the opportunity to hone their skills with experienced coaches, and a Hall of Famer.

Top college and high school coaches will provide daily instruction to youth athletes interested in improving their individual baseball or softball skills. In addition, Hall of Famers will provide a day of batting instruction at the camps. Rod Carew will instruct in Fargo, Brainerd, and Robbinsdale, while Paul Molitor will be at the camp in River Falls.

Camps will be held in Fargo (June 2-3), Brainerd (June 9–10), Robbinsdale (June 16-17) and River Falls (June 30 – July 1).

The Twins Community Fund offers a Baseball and Softball Camp Scholarship Program to those demonstrating financial need.
