Wondering what’s going on in and around our neighborhood? Well here are a few things to catch-up on…

“April showers bring May flowers” … and green lawns and the start of our vegetable gardens! Let’s take a look at what the experts suggest at www.resolutiongardens.com, www.naturalgardeneraustin.com, and www.centraltexasgardening.net/calendar.htm now that we are approaching summer:• Finish planting vegetables and herbs so you can enjoy homegrown

produce this summer. This is a good time to plant black-eyed peas, cantaloupe, cucumber, eggplant, peppers, pumpkin, sweet potato, squash, and watermelon.

• Plant ground covers, hot weather annuals and ornamental plants such as ajuga, begonia, caladiums, copper plant, geraniums, impatiens, marigolds, periwinkle, portulaca, zinnia, ornamental grasses, and hardy varieties of palms.

• Continue to plant perennials (black-eyed Susans, purple coneflower, daisies, lantana, plumbago, and salvia).

• If you are interested in attracting butterflies, you can try planting passionflower, fennel, parsley, butterfly bush or butterfly weed.

• Fertilize plantings monthly and mulch all base soil around plants to conserve water.

• Check roses, ornamentals and vegetables for aphids, powdery mildew, and spider mites which begin to appear with hot weather.

• Add a half-inch of compost to the top of your lawn and landscape areas to provide nutrients, followed by watering to prevent potential burning in the heat.

• Apply Lady Bug Terra Tonic or Medina Soil Activator to your lawn, landscape and vegetable gardens to improve the health of your plants.

Did you know that Cedar Park has a Sculpture Garden? Well I didn’t! It opened in 2013 and is located at 1435 Main Street right next to the Cedar Park Recreation Center. Most of the sculptures are on loan from the artists and are rotated about once a year. Those that are on loan are available for purchase. And, right now, the Sculpture Garden is seeking new submissions! Artists of all experience levels are being considered (amateur to professional!). Entry forms must be submitted by May 27, 2016. If you are interested in further information, you can contact the Sculpture Garden at 512-401-5500, go to http://www.cedarparktexas.gov/index.aspx?page=820 or stop by and just enjoy the Garden!

Have you ever wondered why Cedar Park doesn’t have an official city flag? Well Mayor Matt Powell did. He took the idea to the City Council in January and the City Council is now reviewing submissions which had to be in by April 30, 2016. The final “product”, which could be one of the designs submitted or elements from several submissions, will be unveiled at a future community event.

Last but certainly not least - don’t miss the May 7th election! The City of Cedar Park is holding a General and Special Election to elect the Mayor, several Council Places (Two, Four and Six) and a proposition for the sale of parkland. TWIN CREEKS TRIBUNE

The cry rang out across Twin Creeks Country Club grounds and over 300 children in their Sunday best ran out to hunt for their eggs from the over 4,000 eggs in the fields. Smiles and laughter abounded while parents circled with their cameras. There was a twist on the usual hunt this year – they had to find a specific colored egg only. When they gathered the required amount of those specifically-colored eggs, they turned them all in for a grand prize. It was a change welcomed by all.

The Star of the day, the Easter Bunny, was hopping around handing out chocolates and taking photos with everyone. Thank you Easter Bunny for visiting with us!! We know you are busy this time of year.

Our own Mad Hatter, Scott Gilpin, was there too, handing out Golden Eggs; if anyone could catch him. Lots of prizes at the prize table for the children to select from. He was such a success, he often had to go into hiding from the children stalking him for his precious prize eggs. Thank you, Scott, for helping make this day so special.

Everyone gathered around to visit the Fannie’s Farm Friends Petting Zoo with our children getting to pet and hold ducks, baby goats, etc. At noon, adults and children gathered for the Easter Bonnet/Mad Hatter contest and all attendees got to choose their choice of prizes. Thank you Phoebe Auld, Austin Hutchinson, and Jay Best for your judging!! It is a hard task to pick a winner among so many wonderfully decorated hats.

Face Painter, Easter Crafts, Jumping Booth, Easter Selfie Booth and lots of Easter Treats and Lemonade rounded up the event. A grand time was had by all!

Many thanks to our Master Planner, Kate Best, for her hard work in planning the day!! It was spectacular! Thank you as well to the rest of the Bunny Social Committee team, Eva Schalles, Holly Clark, Scott Gilpin, Kristina Heilman, and Sara Lee. Your time and hard work to organize and set-up these events is so greatly appreciated and could not be done without you. We also have a couple of new Social Committee members, Lisa Powell and Heather Buratto. So glad to have you on-board!

If you too would like to join the fun and help out, just let one of us know. All are welcome!

Event photos can be seen at http://1drv.ms/1XsSj07 . Please let us know if you have any you would like to add to any of the event folders.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next event, the Grand Ol’ 4th of July Bash at the TCCC pool.

All animal owners realize how much work and effort it takes to provide pets with proper care and the safety they deserve. The responsibility that comes with taking care of a four-legged friend does not stop when you leave your house. Since many accidents occur when pets are home alone, it is essential to pet proof your house. From pet fire safety to poison prevention, these pet safety tips cover all aspects that your family needs to be aware of to maintain a safe home.

Each year, 40,000 pets are killed in house fires. The following are a few simple steps you can take to protect your pets and your property in the event there is a fire in your home when no one is there:• Put pet alert decals prominently in your front windows to alert

first responders to the fact that you have pets inside. You can get these at your pet store, fire department, from your alarm company, or you can buy them online.

• Keep your yard clean and hedges trimmed. To allow greater visibility for your neighbors and prevent the possibility of a brush fire near your home.

• Have your heating system inspected every fall. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a silent killer responsible for more than 400 human deaths and 20,000 trips to the emergency room each year.

• Invest in a monitored alarm system, which will send you a text alert while automatically dispatching the fire department if a smoke or carbon monoxide detector is activated. Motion alarms can include pet-friendly capabilities.

• Make sure one of your trusted neighbors has a key to your home. In the event of an emergency, they may be able open a door to let firemen in—or your pet out.Follow these simple cat and dog safety tips and leave your furry

loved ones at home knowing they’ll be okay in the event of a fire emergency.

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day? Here are some interesting facts about Memorial Day, a federal holiday for honoring the people who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces of the United States.• The holiday started after the Civil War in 1868 to honor the Union

and Confederate soldiers that had died.• Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because of the

early tradition of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags.• Although there were many communities that had been celebrating

Memorial Day independently, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, N.Y. the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo first celebrated the holiday on May 5, 1866.

• Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30th for many years. In 1971 Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in

Memorial Day

May and declared it a federal holiday.• On December 28, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the National

Moment of Remembrance Act designating 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day as a National Moment of Remembrance.

• It’s a tradition to wear red poppies in honor of those who died in war.

• Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.

• The first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was held in 1868. The crowd that attended that day was about the same size as those that attend today’s observance – about 5,000 people.
