It’s hard to believe that this year is half over and we still have so much to look forward to, both within the City of Cedar Park and, of course, in our neighborhood!

To start with, let’s look at the outcome of our city elections. Although results are all but official at the time of this article, we want to congratulate the City Council incumbents: Stephen Thomas, Lyle Grimes and Jon Lux who appear to have retained their seats on the Council. We also want to thank candidates Stephen Thomas and Maria Talamo for coming out to our community to personally speak with residents about their issues and concerns. A special thanks to everyone that got out and voted during our first year as citizens of the City of Cedar Park!

There are a couple of items that we wanted to highlight now that we are Cedar Park residents. The first has to do with the City curfew ordinance for minors under the age of 17. This applies to public places, which include streets and the park in our neighborhood. The City’s curfew hours are from 11 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday morning and continue each day on this schedule through Friday morning plus 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings. Kids seen without accompanying parents can be reported as a non-emergency to the Cedar Park Police at 512-260-4600. Note that there are exceptions to the curfew and we will be posting the curfew ordinance details on both the Nextdoor and Goodwin sites. The curfew ordinance is a way

to report suspicious activity regarding people you don’t recognize. Note that you should always dial 911 if you perceive a serious safety issue, threatening situation, or a crime being committed.

Secondly, over the past few years we have seen posts on Nextdoor.com regarding safety concerns with kids driving golf carts in our neighborhood. The City’s Transportation Code indicates that a golf cart is a motor vehicle, requiring a licensed driver to operate it on a public roadway. Now that we live within the city limits, this includes kids driving golf carts on our neighborhood streets.

You may have noticed, either online or in your 2015 property tax appraisal statement, an error where the Travis Central Appraisal District (TCAD) erroneously lists both WCID and City of Cedar Park taxing authorities. As a result of annexation, only the City of Cedar Park should be listed. We want to let you know that the error has been corrected and the WCID entry has been removed. The city has worked with TCAD to correct this on their website and is working on getting new tax notices sent in the mail, but know that your property tax bill at the end of the year will be correct (yay!).

Every 5 - 7 years or more, the City of Cedar Park considers capital improvement projects through the issuance of general obligation bonds;

and, it is great to know that we in Twin Creeks have representation on the Cedar Park Bond Task Force. Both Ross Burns and Tom Moody are members of the task force which is in the process of reviewing and prioritizing improvements for our fire and police departments, parks and recreational facilities, and roadways and streets around the city. If you would like to learn more about these activities check out CedarParkBond.com. The city is also planning an open house in June where you can hear more about these potential projects so check out the site for more information if you are interested. The process ends with a general bond election, where the voters get the final say in what improvements are actually funded.

Talking about improvements, improvements are also continuing at the Club. Bryant Early, General Manager at the club, has reported that the new workout equipment was delivered and has been installed. The welcomed rain has caused a bit of a delay in completing the work on the waterworks play area but it will be completed by Memorial Day weekend when the pool officially opens to members. The new swim lane lines will be in by then as well. Lifeguards will be at the pool Memorial Day weekend and then will return in June right after the end of the school year.

Planning for our next major event within Twin Creeks is underway – the upcoming 4th of July parade and celebration! Stay tuned for more information on the parade and other activities planned for that day. Updates will be provided via the online site Nextdoor.com for Twin Creeks. If you would like to help with the 4th of July activities being planned please contact Shelley Evans at [email protected].

Shelley is also looking for enthusiastic volunteers to continue the activities that have been planned by the Social Committee as she has decided to step down this year as chair of that committee. Shelley has given us in Twin Creeks much of her time over the past few years coordinating and sponsoring many of the major events in our neighborhood (Easter egg hunts, July 4th parades, haunted houses, and the Christmas party). If you are interested in volunteering for this, please let Shelley know ASAP. We want these activities to continue in the neighborhood and can’t do it without volunteers.

If you haven’t joined Nextdoor.com yet, we encourage you to do so. Like any other online social site, it has its growing pains but it is a great vehicle for getting information out quickly to the neighborhood whether it’s inquiring about services, asking for help from your neighbors, or alerting each of us to safety issues. Although it is not an official HOA site, the HOA may use it to disseminate information quickly and/or learn about issues in the neighborhood.

Last, but certainly not least, we were remiss last month in not thanking Dr. Elizabeth Kupfurer, another valued member on the Architecture Review Committee (ARC), for her contributions to the committee. The ARC plays an important role in approving modifications to our properties and homes and we appreciate all the volunteers that put hard work into evaluating and approving homeowner requests.

See you around the neighborhood!!

The New Hill Country Science Mill in Johnson CitySUMMER FUN:

The Hill Country Science Mill opened in February to rave reviews! Only one hour from Austin, it’s the perfect day trip for families looking to find indoor fun this summer. The museum’s mission is to help kids discover the fun of science by exploring and interacting with the exhibits and games. The museum’s founder, Bonnie Baskin, believes “kids learn to love science by doing it, not by reading about it.”

She has spent the last two years readying a historic Johnson City gristmill and cotton gin, which operated in the 1880s, for its new purpose: a place where kids can have fun with science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The 17,000-square-foot space features more than 25 interactive exhibits, hands-on maker stations and art installations, all designed to spark kids’ interest in the STEM subjects.

The Mill’s exhibits were sourced both locally and globally, and many were created specifically for the space. The installations blend art, kinetic technology, augmented reality, and computer gaming. All are available in both English and Spanish.

With a focus on older elementary, middle school and high school students (but with something for ALL ages to enjoy) the Science

Mill allows visitors to imagine themselves as a future scientist or engineer. Whether creating an "explosion" in the

hydrogen ball launcher, experimenting with

air pressure to move sailboats, or making a 3D topographic map in a sandbox, it’s inevitable that visitors of all ages will have great fun while learning.

In addition to the many exhibits and hands-on activities, the Science Mill has a 3D movie theater, outdoor exhibits, a toddler play area and magnetic gear wall, a Biology Lab, a café, and much more!

Visit sciencemill.org for more information on hours, special events, birthday parties, field trips and summer camps.

Mention "PEEL" when you visit the museum for a kid's admission discount!
