“I used to stand on the front steps of the homeless shelter. I used to pray for

strength, guidance, and wisdom.

And that is what I found at Twin Cities RISE!. They have shared their strength, their guidance, and their wisdom with me. It made me a better person, and I think it can make all of us better people and a better community.”

TOGETHER, WE CAN DEFEAT POVERTY

Page 3: Twin Cities RISE! 2013 Annual Report

Th is is an exciting time for Twin Cities RISE! as 2014 marks our 20th year of working to eliminate generational poverty in our community. We continue to have extraordinary success in helping our participants fi nd and retain living wage jobs despite a diffi cult economic environment over the last several years.

Refl ecting on the past, and especially in 2013, Twin Cities RISE! continues to be successful because of the community that comes together to support this important enterprise. Th ank you for being part of our story and investing in our participants.

Twin Cities RISE! has established itself as one of the most successful anti-poverty programs in the country dealing with diffi cult to employ individuals. In 2013, a national benchmarking study showed that for similar ex-off ender training programs, our average 12-month job retention rate of 82% is one of the highest in the nation. Our superior long-term results are due to an unwavering commitment to accountability - to our investors, and to our employer customers; and reciprocally with our participants. Accountability is the basis of our innovative Pay-for-Performance funding agreement and our Personal Empowerment curriculum, which are now being utilized across the country.

One of our 2013 successes was the launch of our HOST program – sector training in the hospitality industry. We also expanded our Personal Empowerment curriculum with nonprofi t partners, invested in deep partnerships with community nonprofi ts, and began targeting the needs of female ex-off enders through a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. Th ese opportunities will lead to

increased options and better outcomes for our participants now and in the future. Learn more about our participants on pages 3-5 of this report.

Challenges were part of our past year as well; we experienced the loss of a signifi cant grant when the state government analysts made an error on our proposal. Despite this, through the incredible generosity of our devoted supporters, we were able to end the year in a strengthened position and prevent a near term reduction in the number of worthy individuals we serve.

Looking to our 20th year, we are excited to move forward under the leadership of our new President & CEO, Tom Streitz, who has passion for our mission, deep knowledge of the issues facing our participants, and the energy to lead TCR! to higher levels of service. Tom replaces Art Berman who retired at the end of 2013 and to whom we thank for his steady leadership.

Building on our strong base we are poised to maintain and expand our innovative program that helps lift families out of generational poverty. Th ank you for being a part of this extraordinary journey.

Together we will move forward boldly to advance our unique mission into our 20th year and beyond.

Building ConnectionsALEX CARSON • GRADUATE

A recent high school graduate, Alex was working at a local fast food restaurant for minimum wage. Unhappy with his work environment, his inability to save money, and the fi nancial barriers to his higher education goals, he oft en wondered what would become of him.

“I defi nitely wanted to do something with my life, but I just didn’t know where to start. I didn’t have the money for college and I knew I wouldn’t be able to save enough away; I felt like I was trapped.”

Aft er discussing options for the future with his mom, Alex enrolled at Twin Cities RISE!. He describes this as “the best decision I ever made.” Alex says what immediately stood out to him was the community that came together to support him.

“Having coaches that are able to relate to you gives you a real sense of comfort,” Alex says. Th e TCR! culture and its focus on Personal Empowerment helped Alex learn career skills, set goals, and accomplish more than he ever thought he could.

“In the past there were times when I would fl y off the handle in some situations ... but Personal Empowerment gave me a whole new perspective on how to approach things,” Alex says. “It was really all I needed to get me motivated and to make sure I responded appropriately.”

In October of 2013, Alex graduated from TCR! with one year of full-time employment with benefi ts from MarketSource, a partner of Target. He was also one of two recipients of the 2013 Robert Morris Empowerment Award given to TCR! participants who demonstrate strong Personal Empowerment in their daily lives.

Today, Alex is focused. He recently moved into his own apartment and has now saved enough money to begin taking college courses. He will soon be joining leadership staff at his store as Assistant Manager.

“Encouragement pours out of everyone … positivity was second nature. Someone

always has your back because everyone is trying to learn something new — there is a connection; it feels like a family.

OUTCOMES

Today, Alex is earning a living wage. He will soon be joining

Empowered with PurposeFAITH KAUK • GRADUATE

Recovering from addiction and moving on aft er a diffi cult divorce, Faith relocated to north Minneapolis in 2011. Months aft er starting over again, she watched from the upstairs bedroom as the roof of her home was ripped off by a tornado. Faith recalls feeling devastated and suicidal.

Faith heard about Twin Cities RISE! through a recent graduate who spoke highly of the program. “I was really worried because my employment history was so bad - there were long employment gaps and a lot of times where I didn’t have work,” Faith says.

But, Faith immediately connected with the curriculum and the coaching staff . She explains that the access to individualized support from the caring professionals and volunteers at TCR! was invaluable, and that it continues to contribute to her success.

Faith was able to work with coaches and facilitators to write an eff ective resume and refi ne her interviewing skills. She also enrolled in classes, improving her computer skills, communication skills, and other job skills.

Faith says the Personal Empowerment classes were essential in building her drive and self-confi dence, “With the empowerment classes I was able to convince myself that I could do it, it was worth it to do, and I was worth it.”

Faith graduated from TCR! in 2013 aft er one year of full-time employment with the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) as a NAZ Connector “family coach.”

With full-time work, Faith’s life has changed dramatically. She has her own apartment. She goes to the doctor and treats her asthma. However, Faith says the greatest changes have been the purpose she has found and the rewards of seeing how her work benefi ts the families she serves.

“There need to be more programs like TCR! in other

areas. It’s changing people’s lives; and those people are going to change the world around them.

j

Today Faith has steady employment, stable housing, and can aff ord medical care.

Teaming up for SuccessAHMED ABDULLAH • GRADUATE

Seeking freedom and a better future for his children, Ahmed Abdullah and his family of six immigrated from Dubai to the United States in 2006. Like many immigrants to the United States, he says you are expected to “just fi nd a job.” Having no relatives or friends in the community to help, he had diffi culty providing for his family.

With fi nancial resources running low, Ahmed was able to use his Arabic language skills to get part time employment with area schools. However, with a strong work ethic and desire to pursue the American dream, he wanted a steady job that would be more reliable, allow him to save money, and plan for his children’s education.

When Ahmed found Twin Cities RISE! he hit the ground running. He says at TCR! several experiences came together to help set him up for employment success.

First was learning foundational skills, such as how to appropriately apply for jobs in the United States. Ahmed says, “In Dubai, employment formalities such as resumes, cover letters, and interviews are not used.” He says that TCR! staff and volunteers showed him how to formally present his professional background and practice talking about his qualifi cations through mock interviews.

Second was learning how to fi nd job opportunities. “I also used resources here to search for jobs … in the past, I had just applied randomly.” He found that using online tools and resources made it much easier to narrow his job search, weigh advancement opportunities, and apply more eff ectively.

Th ird was opening doors. Given his experience as a legal professional in Dubai, TCR! staff and employment partners worked together to help Ahmed land an internship with Lindquist & Vennum law fi rm. As he neared the end of his internship, Lindquist & Vennum off ered Ahmed a full-time position. Th ree months later he earned his fi rst raise.

Today, Ahmed is very busy. He loves his job and says that his family is comfortable in the United States.

Now, Ahmed works for a top law fi rm and is confi dent in the future he is building for

his children.

“Friendship, love, respect, and support. These words

come to me when I think of Twin Cities RISE!. I recommend everyone to TCR! if they face the same problems I did.

LEADING COMMUNITIES

#1TCR! RANKS TOP IN THE NATION IN AVERAGE JOB RETENTION *

At 82% after 12 months, the average long-term job retention rate at Twin Cities RISE! is one of the highest in the nation. A study published by The Corporation for a Skilled Workforce in 2013 benchmarked 332 national job training programs. For nationally benchmarked programs

that serve ex-offenders, the 12-month job retention average is just 42%. Unfortunately, many workforce development programs focus on short-term training that may result in more placements, but at the expense of long-term retention. In contrast, for TCR!, long-term job

retention is the most critical measure of sustainable impact.

Entering the Twin Cities RISE! program with an average annual income of $2,611, participants who obtained full-time

employment in 2013 achieved a base pay of $26,936 – an average increase of 932% or $24,325 more in wages.

A Village of SupportBridging and Twin Cities RISE! came together nearly a decade ago when TCR! referred many participants to Bridging for services to help them achieve housing stability. Bridging, a furniture resource for low-income adults in the Twin Cities, is the largest furniture bank in North America.

Th e relationship has gone beyond the services Bridging provides, and has developed into a strong internship partner for TCR! participants. In the last six years, Bridging has provided valuable work experience to more than 20 TCR! interns – six of whom went on to work for the agency.

Sara Sternberger, Executive Director of Bridging, says the internship program between Bridging and TCR! provides valuable and transferrable experience that participants can apply to any workplace.

“By working together with clients, collaborating with volunteers and staff , and developing relationships with donors, interns learn how to eff ectively be part of a team and the ecosystem of work,” Sara explains.

Shereese Turner, Board Member at Bridging and Director of Recruitment and Internships at TCR!, says that Bridging is a stellar example of a successful community partnership. Shereese explains that, to Bridging, off ering internships for TCR! participants is a continuation of support for the participants, not a break in the process. For example, managers at Bridging engage interns in a leadership style that emulates the coaching provided at TCR!. Shereese says it is experiences like these that make for very meaningful and benefi cial partnerships.

“Th e relationship between Bridging and Twin Cities RISE! can best be described as a village; someone is always looking out for you,” Shereese explains.

In addition, Bridging recently created an advocacy committee that is chaired by Shereese Turner. Th e committee researches homelessness and poverty, and advocates for community solutions to support lasting change. “It is really important that we understand the roots of poverty and homelessness and collaborate with other organizations, like TCR!, to improve the lives of our clients,” says Sara.

Premier Disability Services, LLC, is an advocacy fi rm that helps people apply for Social Security disability benefi ts and Supplemental Security Income. Lindsey McInnis, Hiring Manager, says that job candidates from Twin Cities RISE! stand out because they are more confi dent and prepared.

“Candidates from Twin Cities RISE! are ready, they research the company, and they know what Premier Disability does,” Lindsey says. “When a coach from TCR! sends me a candidate, I know it will be someone who will show up for their job.”

Candidates who are hired can be proud of their accomplishment because there is a great amount of technical expertise required to perform day-to-day tasks. Premier Disability has hired three full-time staff from TCR!.

In addition to hiring full-time staff , Premier Disability and TCR! partnered to create an exclusive internship program. Th e internship program at Premier Disability off ers paid internships to participants in their call center. So far, Premier Disability has hired seven interns.

“TCR! is a great place to build you up and gain more skills if you are thinking about reentering the workforce,” Lindsey says.

y Transforming TogetherQUINTEN OSGOOD • WORK SKILLS COACH AND GRADUATE

Quinten Osgood joined Twin Cities RISE! as a recruiter seven years ago aft er graduating from the program. Today, he serves participants at Twin Cities RISE! in the role of a Work Skills Coach.

Quinten says that his favorite part of his job is supporting individuals who are trying to make positive changes in their lives. As someone who is fi lled with an abundance of positive energy, he says that he loves being a strong partner in their success; “I am their biggest cheerleader in developing an empowered outlook on life and reducing their barriers to employment,” Quinten says.

As a coach, Quinten facilitates skill development to help participants build eff ective and transferrable life management skills. He helps participants learn and practice problem solving, self-discipline, sociability, and teamwork; skills that are essential for any job.

As a Personal Empowerment facilitator, Quinten helps individuals unlearn thoughts and behaviors that may be holding them back. Th is includes helping them gain self-awareness, self-esteem, empathy, and relationship skills that may help them be successful at work and in life.

“TCR! is a place where, regardless of where you are in life, we are able to help you succeed,” Quinten says. “Everyone comes with diff erent experiences – and we are willing and able to meet you wherever you are at.”

“It is so incredible to see folks realize they are able to make

huge leaps toward success by taking back their life, making better choices, and realizing they are in control.

Page 12: Twin Cities RISE! 2013 Annual Report

Twin Cities RISE! piloted the Hospitality Operations Service Training (HOST) program on-site in October of 2013 in partnership with Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) and many local hotel partners. Interviews with hoteliers identifi ed key positions that are diffi cult to fi ll. Th e HOST program provides specialized training for two of those areas: guest services and banquet set-up.

Sector training is an excellent opportunity for participants to develop competitive jobs skills. Our approach to sector training is unique because participants fi rst complete the core curriculum to develop the foundational and Personal Empowerment skills needed for success in sector training, and to promote long-term job retention and career growth. Th is is especially important for our participants who have little recent work experience and multiple barriers to employment.

HOST Instructor Rosealee Lee describes the partnership as “an opportunity for participants to break the cycle of generational poverty and the impacts it oft en brings, by providing them the tools to succeed in the world. Th en HOST comes in to train them for a future in the hospitality industry.”

Dusty Perryman of Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, a HOST Employer Partner, says the program has been a great success already. He says Hyatt Regency Minneapolis has already hired one associate through the program and looks forward to hiring more. Dusty said, “Th e HOST program furthers the already great work of TCR!. Th e training is comprehensive and provides hands-on experience. Individuals come to us not only with the interpersonal skills through TCR! but also with great hospitality training.”

When refl ecting on the fi rst year of HOST, Rosealee says that the program participants are “tenacious and their will to succeed is amazing; they have great futures ahead.” Th rough the combination of the TCR! core program and HOST, Rosealee believes participants are receiving training that is above industry standard, which makes them ideal candidates for long careers in the hospitality industry.

HOST is funded through the generosity of Minnesota Job Skills Partnership, Th e Opus Foundation, Th e Minneapolis Foundation, and the Northwest Area Foundation.

Page 13: Twin Cities RISE! 2013 Annual Report

In 2013, Twin Cities RISE! expanded the reach of our signature Personal Empowerment curriculum. Personal Empowerment, a personal skills training program, helps individuals make the internal changes necessary to transform their lives. Keith Simons, Director of Personal Empowerment, led eff orts in 2013 to bring these tools into the community. Th e Personal Empowerment Collaborative, a grant-funded project serving community partners in the Twin Cities area, provides training to nonprofi t organizations. Th is includes a unique “Train the Trainer” certifi cation program so partners can become licensed to facilitate the curriculum with their own staff and clients. In 2013, Keith provided Personal Empowerment training to 26 nonprofi ts and educational organizations locally and nationally. Hope Community in the Minneapolis Phillips neighborhood has been using Personal Empowerment with clients for three years. Executive Director Mary Keefe says: “People who are involved in their community, as they face many life issues, tell us over and over that Personal Empowerment does truly help them discover their own power. It has become an important tool for building community capacity.”

Another long-standing partner, the Jeremiah Program, recently expanded nationally. Twin Cities RISE! trained Jeremiah’s new Austin, Texas staff and volunteers in Personal Empowerment facilitation. Jeremiah Board Member Renee Hall says she highly recommends the Personal Empowerment course and that the training is “benefi cial for all people – at all stages of life and from all walks of life.” Jeremiah Program Austin will use Personal Empowerment as part of their application process for future clients.

Personal Empowerment is at the heart of our approach to defeating generational poverty, both with our own clients and more broadly, by helping community partners become more eff ective.

Volunteers

Henry Berman began volunteering at Twin Cities RISE! in 2011 working together with participants as a mock interviewer.

Henry explains, “Mock interviewing is a great way to get acclimated to the organization. Individuals are at the end of their participation cycle. It is the net result of all the education and the work they have put in thus far in the program.”

Henry said that coming to TCR! and learning how damaging generational poverty can be – not just to skillset but also to someone’s whole psyche – was very enlightening to him. Th rough his volunteer work he feels he is able to help participants overcome some of their barriers.

“Th e TCR! curriculum, particularly with its Personal Empowerment approach, strikes at that core and creates this notion of values, being lovable, and believing in yourself. And when it comes down to it, much of the job hunting process is about confi dence. Mock interviews help build confi dence.”

Today, in addition to his mock interviewing, Henry volunteers with the Workplace Communications course, helping participants with the essential writing skills. “Being able to craft a core message, learning how to express yourself in a meaningful and eff ective manner, is something I feel strongly about and wanted to help participants learn” Henry says.

In 2013, Henry volunteered over 100 hours with TCR!.

Tom Swain is nearing his 12th year serving on the Board of Twin Cities RISE!. As a donor and community philanthropist, Tom says what initially intrigued him about TCR! was the mission of the organization.

“Twin Cities RISE! hasn’t succeeded until a participant has full-time employment in a living wage job.” He says ultimately it is this commitment that helps community growth, creates less recidivism, and a high return on investment for taxpayers. For Tom, the success of the program lies in personal accountability. With the median age of a TCR! participant in their 30s, he says this is no small achievement. He says it is powerful to see adults take control of their situation. “It’s a tough program … you need to be willing to change your life,” Tom says.

Tom believes the Personal Empowerment is another reason for long-term success of TCR! graduates.

“All of us could use a little empowerment at one time or another,” Tom says. “It is vital for people to know that they are loveable, valuable, and important; when you can genuinely believe those things about yourself, you can go on and succeed in anything.”

Tom says that if you want to understand the true essence of TCR! and what makes it unique among anti-poverty programs, come to a graduation ceremony. “It is so gratifying to go to graduation ceremonies and see men and women with their families getting up and sharing their contributions,” Tom says. “What a great feeling that is.”
