Self-tanners, also known as sunless tanning, spray tanning, airbrush tanning, fake tanning and even UV-free tanning are so much more than a body makeup or a tinted moisturizer. Self-tanning refers to any product that interacts with your skin to turn it tan. These products can be in the form of lotions, creams, mousses, sprays, gels, and foam. The active ingredient in most effective sunless tanning products is the sugar additive, dihydroxyacetone (DHA). When applied, DHA reacts with dead cells in the skin’s surface to temporarily darken the skin. The coloring typically wears off after a few days. This is why self-tanners fade and do not wash off. This is the same type of interaction you witness with foods turning brown such as apples and pears when the inside is left exposed to air. Most people now realize that the sun, and more specifically UV radiation, is dangerous. Study after study has shown that UV radiation (from the sun or tanning beds) causes premature wrinkling of the skin, age spots and even skin cancer.DHA has been approved by the FDA for use in self-tanners since 1973. DHA is also approved by Europe’s version of the FDA, the European Medicines Agency. Further, sunless tanning is recommended by the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Skin Cancer Foundation as a safer alternative to UV radiation from the sun or tanning beds.In addition to DHA, self-tanning products also contain a number of other ingredients that are found in many other cosmetic and beauty products. These can include botanicals, organics, moisturizing agents, cosmeceuticals, chemical compounds and other commonly used ingredients.DHA has not been found to cause any ill effects when used as directed. Self-tanning is the safest known way to get a gorgeous tan.Depending on which product you use, results will begin to develop within a few hours and can last anywhere from 3-7 days.Tanned skin looks healthier and more attractive. Fake Bake gives an instant sun-kissed color and develops into a long lasting sunless fake tan guaranteeing longer lasting, more natural-looking results and has become the choice of beauty editors and experts, TV personalities and celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Guillana Rancic, Cheryl Burke, Nicole Scherzinger and Jessica Alba. Diy self tanningFake Bake line of self-tanning cosmetics is now available at Lush. Fake Bake cosmetics are all Paraben-Free and only contain naturally derived, premium tanning agents DHA Erythulose and DMI which produce a bronze tan. Synthetic ingredients and added fragrance can interfere with the chemical skin reaction and cause an orange color. Easy application, instructions included with each product.pro Airbrush spray tanningSpray tanning is a form of self-tanning where a fine mist is sprayed over the body. The tanning solution (with DHA) is applied directly onto the skin as a mist using a professional spray gun. Professional spray tan application

provides the most even tanning results because the tanning liquid is atomized and applied to the skin perfectly uniform. Pro Spray Tanning now available at Lush.

vein, vein Go AwayBy WIllI laWRence, R.N.

There is no reason to let your veins force you to cover up this summer. A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins and varicose veins; heredity, pregnancy, standing occupations (hair stylist, teachers) and hormones. The main difference between spider veins and varicose veins is the size. They both occur as a result of weak or damaged valves. By sealing off the damaged vessels it allows the vein network to naturally redirect the blood flow to healthy veins. A highly effective treatment is sclerotherapy. It is done on a outpatient basis and involves micro injections of a sclerosing solution that requires no anesthesia and no downtime. The procedure may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with varicose and spider veins i.e. itching burning, swelling, muscle cramps and pain. It takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the number of veins being treated. It is the kind of thing you can do on your lunch break. It does not require going home and putting your legs up. Quite the opposite, you must walk 30 to 60 minutes a day. Prolonged sitting, standing, heavy weight lifting and jogging should be avoided during treatment. If you are pregnant or breast-feeding you will be advised to postpone treatment. In most cases veins during pregnancy will disappear on their own in six weeks to two months after delivery. Treatments are usually scheduled at 3-4 week intervals. Although sclerotherapy treats the visible veins, it is important to know that treatment will not prevent new veins from emerging in the future. As time passes you may find that you need “touchups” for new veins that surface. It is very rare that a specialist has the opportunity to use a treatment that gives both relief of symptoms and cosmetic improvement. The impact on patients self image and daily function can be incredibly positive. So get ready for summer now.

Sail The Sea lover! By canDIce DIcKInSon &natalIe SanneMalM

It’s August in Bermuda and the heat is on. We can’t think of a better way to spend a day or evening than sailing the open waters in and around Bermuda aboard the Sea Lover! Ana Luna a 45’ Luxury Catamaran explores the scenic and historic sights of Bermuda’s eastern end on a variety of excursions. We joined Captain Nathan for a morning snorkel and bliss wasn’t far from reach. The warm salty ocean tickled our skin as we coasted through Bermuda’s natural beauty. It’s hard to believe that this fascinating underworld of life exists so closely off our shores. We sailed around the island, anchoring in the most enchanting spots, swimming in and out of shipwrecks while the aquatic life drifted by our side. A baby green turtle was quite curious as to what these flippers and masks were all about.Regular Sail, Snorkel & Swim cruises are scheduled weekly and after sailing past Bermuda’s scenic and historic eastern end anchors in a picturesque and private location then explore Bermuda’s underwater world! Sunset Cruises are also scheduled weekly sailing past ancient forts, railway relics, ferry docks and then find yourself captivated by a stunning panoramic sunset. Feels like you are sailing right into it for at least an hour, pure bliss and very romantic. Private cruises are available for full, half day, and overnight live aboard trips. Bioluminescent Glow Worm Cruises are scheduled two to three days after the full moon. According to our records the next full moon is on August 21 and we can confirm that there is a Glow Worm Spectacular Wine Cruise scheduled on August 24 from 7:30pm - 9:30pm featuring fine wines and canapés by Discovery Wines. Space is limited so you should call 441 296 9463 right now if you are interested. Captain Nathan will likely have additional Glow Worm Cruises scheduled however you will have to contact him directly for details. For those wondering what a Glow Worm is, they are cute little creatures that live in Bermuda’s shallow and protected waters. What’s all the fuss about? A few days after a full moon during the warmer months their mating ritual begins approximately forty-five minutes after sunset and lasts for about thirty minutes. They swarm to the surface and what you see is thousands of wiggly glowing worms frolicking at sea. It is one of the many spectacular shows that nature puts on for us every year. What are you waiting for? Give Captain Nathan a call and get onboard! Call 441 504 3780 or visit www.AnaLunaAdventures.com for more information.

Bermuda Cedar GiftsBy canDIce DIcKInSon

One afternoon, Alan Murray found himself surrounded by old Bermuda Cedar in his wife’s Grandpa’s basement. Grandpa was a cedar carpenter and the old wood dated back more than 50 years. Alan immediately thought about making a few things using the old wood for the family that they could remember Grandpa by with each and every use. His first project was a spice rack and then he started to think about his time using a lathe a few years back in Nova Scotia. How fitting it was for him to stumble upon the old cedar when he came to Bermuda, if he used a lathe he could create all sorts of things and so he discovered a perfect recipe to feed his passion. Alan started to make pens and other small items using a small lathe. As quickly as he finished a piece, he created another. He set up a small workshop in his storage room and with just enough space his creative juices began to flow. Today, Alan makes a number of beautiful gifts using old Bermuda Cedar. He has created a special collection of pens, pencils, wine stoppers, men’s razors and shaving sets and even a coffee scoop! Each piece is carefully hand crafted and special orders including engraving by Bermuda Blueprinting can be requested. These hand-crafted pieces of art make the perfect gift for anyone who appreciates having a little piece of Bermuda. Alan uses reclaimed wood and sometimes a small nail hole appears as he turns the wood on his lathe. It is especially cool to come across these markings as it really makes each and every piece original. You can find Alan on Wednesday evenings at Harbour Front until August 28th. His beautifully hand crafted Bermuda Cedar Gifts can also be found at the Alexandra Mosher Studio in Washington Mall just off Reid Street, on Queen Street at the Island Shop and online at www.luxurygiftsbermuda.com, where all purchases are elegantly gift-wrapped and hand delivered same or next day. Alan is happy to talk about custom designs and orders. He also works with coloured acrylic. So the next time your looking for a gift that is really unique and special, give Alan a call at 441 532 4869 or email him at [email protected].

island winds bermuda “I was pretty nervous, I didn’t even know if I would be able to stand up on the thing. Before I knew it, I was gliding along the open water smiling down at a baby turtle swimming beside me.”

A Paddle Board lesson is an ideal adventure for any occasion and suitable for just about anyone. This is the TWiB Teams’ top pick for summer fun and our favourite new way to enjoy a hot day out on the open water. Some things are just worth trying out so we packed our bags and headed up to Somerset to meet Glenn Mello, owner of Island

Winds Bermuda. Once you arrive and start getting set up, the first thing Glenn will do is give you a general overview of what you can expect and things you can consider to keep you safe while you are getting comfortable being on a board. You will be outfitted with Island Winds regular safety standards including a safety leash and a safety vest. Glenn tailors a board and a paddle to each person going on the tour based on height, weight and experience. For a beginner, a board with a high level of stability will be provided. Next, Glenn decides on the route to take and this again will depend on the group’s overall comfort level. The route may adjust while the tour is in motion as Glenn sees fit. For example, he may lead the tour close to land until he feels that everyone is confident enough to explore the open water. If anyone needs a little extra guidance, Glenn will glide along side offering extra instruction on how to make the best of the experience.

looking to have some fun in the sun this summer? The TWiB Team’s Summer Adventure guide has you covered... All you need is an adventure buddy & camera to capture the memories! Share them with us on This Week in Bermuda’s facebook page!

We had a fantastic time with Glenn. He really took his time and made us comfortable before we even got our feet wet. Once we were in the water I felt it didn’t take long for us to feel comfortable and pretty soon each of us was gliding off and exploring. I think the highlight for me is when I looked down and saw a baby turtle swimming beside my board. I have lived in Bermuda off and on my whole life and the only time I have ever gotten this close to a turle was at the Aquarium. Paddleboarding is an excellent way to get out and enjoy our sea life while getting a little exercise too! what is included in each lesson & when are lessons offered?Island Winds uses premium gear from Starboard for each lesson; including paddleboard, paddle, safety leash and buoyancy vest. Lessons are offered all year round, when conditions are suitable and safe. How long is the lesson and at what rate?A tour is $60 1.5hr and rentals are $30 and $20 each additional hour.what to bring?• Depending on the season, either swimsuit, rashguard, or a wetsuit, a hat,

towel, sunscreen and sunglasses with safety leash if possible. Check out the inexpensive polarized sunglasses from Island Winds.

pgA grand slam: Bermuda’s Date with Greats By KIM SWan JP, TEACHING PROFESSIONAL

With the repeated hosting of the PGA Grand Slam, Bermuda has regained its place on the world stage and we at Port Royal Golf Course are exceedingly proud to be at the forefront of Bermuda’s annual date with the world of golf. As we eagerly await in hope of the opportunity to finally welcome the great Tiger Woods to our shores, in contrast, it was an exciting time forty years

ago when then world #1 Jack Nicklaus played an exhibition match at Port Royal Golf Course and prior to that in the 1960’s when major champion Gary Player graced our shores for an exhibition match as the touring pro for one of our own major resorts or when in 1967 Tony Lema who has family ties in Bermuda, as is father was Bermuda born of Portuguese decent, also graced our shores to play in Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf. It is also worth noting that prior to the 1960s, Bermuda was a pioneer in the world of televised golf when Bermuda hosted the prestigious World Championship Golf Series in 1959, featuring the infamous match between Sam Snead and Mason Rudolph. With the PGA Grand Slam only weeks away, Bermuda remains in the forefront within the golfing world - having now played host to the prestigious professional golf season finale seen by millions around the world - the PGA Grand Slam of Golf at Port Royal Golf Course, demonstrates to the global golf community that Bermuda is serious about golf. Today, thousands of golf enthusiast have already played Port Royal Golf Course because of viewing previous televised broadcast of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and following this October’s event, a new batch of followers will be enlightened to the mystique that is Port Royal Golf Course. With the 2013 PGA Grand Slam of Golf just around the corner, we urge Bermudian sports enthusiast and the golf community to be volunteers or purchase advance tickets and join in as spectators. Let the world of golf see a collage of the beautiful people of Bermuda and in doing so, allow our affection and love for the game of golf jump out of the television screen and encourage unprecedented numbers of visitors to come to our shores.

If you're looking for great golfing apparel, shop at Port Royal Golf Course

With the birth of leisure tourism, collecting souvenir spoons became a popular hobby in Europe during the late 1800s. The first American souvenir spoon was made in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the presidency of George Washington. This was followed quickly by a Martha Washington spoon and one year later by a Salem Witch spoon. Interest in souvenir spoons suddenly exploded and in 1891 several books on collecting souvenir spoons were published. With the 1893 Chicago World Fair, also known as the Columbian Exposition, which commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the New World, the Golden Age of souvenir spoons had truly begun. Many souvenir spoons can be considered works art as they were exquisitely engraved, sculptured or enameled and are today highly desirable collectables. It did not take long for Bermuda to get caught up in the spoon collecting phenomenon. One of the first to sell them was Duncan McColl Doe, a jeweler on Front Street. He offered several styles, one spoon showing a skyline of Hamilton, and another with no less than six Bermuda themes on both sides of the handle, from onions to a boy eating a slice of watermelon, the Natural Arches, a vegetable seller with his horse drawn cart, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and the Hamilton Princess Hotel.George W. Schiebler, a famous New York jeweler, made a wonderful series of Bermuda spoons in the art nouveau style, while other manufacturers such as Charles M. Robbins, Chester Shepard and Watson & Newell of Massachusetts produced a large variety of Bermuda souvenir spoons as well as ladles, butter knifes, tea strainers, etc. Today, souvenir spoon collecting is a niche hobby, with serious collectors specializing in the spoons of the turn of the 20th century, either by type of spoon or a location such as Bermuda.

5-1/2” long, this Duncan M. Doe spoon shows several popular Bermuda themes on both sides of the handle – a pair of onions, a boy eating a slice of

watermelon, the natural arches, a vegetable seller with his donkey cart and, on the back, the Gibbs Hill Lighthouse and the Princess Hotel. Both spoons show

the Royal Palms at Crow Lane in the bowl.

This Duncan M. Doe souvenir spoon shows the skyline of Hamilton, including White’s Island in the foreground. It is 5-3/8” long.

Schiebler souvenir spoons were made in two sizes – 5-3/4” and 4-3/8”. Exquisitely crafted in the art nouveau style of the turn of the 20th century, these spoons were only made for a few exclusive locations, such as Bermuda, Hawaii and San Francisco.

The bowls of Schiebler spoons are engraved with Bermuda scenes and the back of the handles are stamped with the ‘Winged S’ Schiebler logo and are engraved ‘Bermuda’.

Mayhew designed the new menu under his direction. Careful to allow Chef Mayhew to explore his creative side, Chef Frost offered valuable advice on flavour profiles, and ensured that the new dishes reflected current trends in major cities such as New York City and Atlanta. Chef Frost explained that today everyone is trying to eat healthy but in a restaurant you have to be really careful not to give up flavours and textures when focusing on lifestyle dishes that cater to particular health preferences, which is exactly what the new menu focuses on. He also ensures that the menu keeps its Bermudian identity, using authentic Bermudian flavours, local produce and always-freshly caught fish from local fishermen when available. Chef Frost also explained that the menu reflects produce that is in season, which guarantees the freshest selection possible!

In many households and restaurants alike a pre-dinner cocktail, also known as an aperitif is just as important as dinner itself. In fact, some look forward to an evening cocktail all day long and are in no hurry to see what’s on the menu until they are seated. Gosling’s recently invited Bermuda’s top bartenders to submit their best Absolut cocktails in an effort to discover Bermuda’s Absolut Best Bartender. Eighteen bartenders across the island submitted delicious and original, summer inspired cocktails and five top qualifiers were chosen to represent five of Absolut’s new flavours.

BABB Judges Vince Angelo, General Manager at Coco Reefs Hotel, Glenn Jones, Manager of Bermuda.com and Nadia Arandjelovic, Senior Reporter at the Royal Gazette, had their work cut out for them. Each of the five drinks presented were creative, Absolut-ly delicious and beautifully presented.

Robby from Flanagan’s created ‘Bermy Dayz’ with 1 ½ oz Absolut Kurant, 1 oz De Kuyper Ginger Liqueur, ½ oz De Kuyper Wild Strawberry Liqueur, a splash of orange juice, pineapple juice, fresh squeezed lime juice shaken and poured into a pink sugar rimmed glass and garnished with an orange and lime slice.

Jai-Michael from RED Steakhouse created ‘Lemon Merigue-ade’ with 2oz Absolut Citron, ¾ oz Bermuda Gold, 2 oz fresh lemon juice, 1 oz simple syrup, ½ oz egg whites, 1-2 drops of vanilla extract, topped with Sprite, then garnished with grated lemon zest. Jai-Michael really took his time creating this masterpiece and explained to the judges and audience that the egg whites were used to simply create a foam on top of the drink. You might have to visit Jai-Michael at RED and ask for a demonstration on this one!

McClain from Coconut Rock created ‘Absolut – Divine’ and began by lacing his martini glass with chocolate syrup. Yum. His cocktail included Amarula, De Kuyper Butterscotch Liqueur, Absolut Vanilla and was shakin and strained into the martini glass then garnished with a cherry. It was absolut-ly divine from first to last sip.

Staleina from Swizzle Inn created ‘Mangotopia’. It was made using 2 parts Mango Absolut, 1 part De Kuyper Ginger Liqueur, soda water, Rose’s lime juice, and Mango purée. It literally looked like a perfectly ripe mango in a glass. It was amazing and probably took some serious skill to layer it right.

with every contest there is a winner! congratulations to Darren from Somerset Country Squire. Darren created ‘Absolut Delight’ with 2oz Absolut Mandarin, 3 drops of Grenadine, ½ oz De Kuyper Raspberry Liqueur, sour mix, a splash of orange juice and then topped the cocktail with Prosecco. This cocktail was a favourite with all of the judges and the audience alike judging by the cheering when he was announced winner!

So there you have it, five tasty summer cocktails perfect for making at home for your next dinner party. Whether you want to serve something classy and sophisticated like the Absolut Delight or perhaps you would like to try making a pitcher of the Mangotopia for a day out on the boat.

all absolut flavours are available at gosling’s Stores.
