Small Groups are coming to St. Gabriel’s! As you have been hearing from Father Liekhus in his homilies this sum-mer, our parish is going to be forming Small Groups this fall. Our parish wide sign-up for Small Groups will be after the Masses on August 22-23 and 29-20. The groups will meet once a week for 11 weeks beginning the week of September 13. The format will be based on the prior Sunday’s readings, and we will use Father’s homily and a reflection with questions to guide our discussion and sharing. Preparation time is minimal. We had a pilot group in the spring. It was a wonderful expe-rience. As an option, we would also like to offer the current St. Gabriel minis-

tries and groups the chance to form their own Small Groups if they would like. This will be a chance for you to share your faith and deepen your friendships within your current minis-tries. You can select someone within the group to facilitate, and we will have facilitator training. Group size would ideally be six–eight people. If you would like a mom’s small group or young adult small group, think about contacting a few friends to join you. If you don’t have six–eight people, we can add the names you have to the sign up sheet for other moms and young adults to fill the group. Please call Karen Fish at (952) 239-1949 or Janet Clemen at (952) 935-5151 for more information or to sign up current ministry groups.

August 23, 2015 - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time “IF IT DOES NOT PLEASE YOU TO SERVE THE LORD, DECIDE TODAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE…AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSEHOLD, WE WILL SERVE THE LORD.” (JOSHUA 24:15)

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a partner in the work of the Lord. A partner is a person who invests their time, talent and treasure. If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it! If you are not already participating in our 2015 Stewardship efforts to grow in discipleship and become a partner in the work of the Lord, Talent Directories and forms are available on the parish website stgabrielhopkins.org or in the back of the church.

Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we conclude our meditation on John chapter six, the bread of life discourse. Finally, at the end, Jesus’ listeners find themselves in a situation that we have all been in. The Lord has put the difficult truth before them, and now they have a difficult choice. None of them understand what Jesus means when he says they must “eat his flesh and drink his blood in order to have eternal life.” So now they must make a choice; they must choose whether they will follow him despite their confusion and uncertainty, trusting in him because he is the Lord, or else return to their old way of life. This is a choice we all have to make. Who will we follow? Who will we love? So that we can make this choice, our Lord has given us a free will. He wants us to freely choose to love Him, to praise and worship Him, to submit to His will. But in order for us to be able to freely choose Him, we must also be free to reject Him. Knowing full well what He was doing, He created each one of us with the ability to reject Him, our Creator, to choose our own will over His and to praise and worship other things instead of Him. We usually think of our will as something inside of us, the decisions that we make internally, in our minds and in our hearts. “ ‘What do I want to do,’ that is my will.” That’s a part of it, but those decisions must have an outward expression. We choose with our actions, not with our thoughts or feelings. If we do not act on what we have chosen, they are simply wishes—desires that have no bearing on reality. So we strive to choose God every day of our lives, not just in our thoughts, but with our actions as well. For example, if upon examining our lives we recognize a pattern of sin and we say to ourselves, “I want to be free of this”, that’s great, but what’s the plan? Is that a wish, or a choice? What are we doing to reflect that desire, that choice we have made to reject sin? Do we avoid its near occasion? Do we change our habits so as to root out the sin from our lives? Or let’s say we believe prayer is an important thing in our lives and we would like to foster that relationship with our Lord. That’s great, so what’s the plan? What time have we set aside for that prayer? What does that relationship that we desire with our Lord look like? If we can find no time, what are the things we are putting ahead of that time alone with our Lord? When Joshua gathers the Israelites around him in our first reading, he puts it right out there: choose now and be done with it. Worship the Lord or worship some other god, but make your decision and live by it. We are faced with that choice every day. Who will we serve? And how will we demonstrate that choice with the way we live our lives? It is a hard thing. Being a faithful follower of Jesus is very difficult. But God knows that we are weak. He knows that we are earthen vessels, and so He is patient and He is merciful. It is never too late to begin growing in holiness, and He is eager to forgive when we come to Him with a contrite heart. Let us ask Him for forgiveness, and take the next step forward in our call to holiness. –Fr. Liekhus

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) Children’s Liturgy of the Word is an opportunity for children ages 6–10 to hear the Sunday readings in age-appropriate language (proclaimed from the Children’s Lectionary) and then participate in a homily and discussion geared toward their understanding. Led by trained adult and teen leaders, CLOW offers these younger members of the community fuller participation in our Sunday Masses. Children simply are dismissed into a separate area during the readings, homily, and Prayers of the Faithful for CLOW and then return to the assembly during the Presentation of Gifts to rejoin their families for the remainder of Mass. This ministry will be starting up again in October and will run most weekends through the end of April. CLOW will be offered at the 4:30pm Saturday Mass and the 8:30am Sunday Mass at St. Joseph’s campus. Many adults and teens are needed (with enough volunteers, you would be scheduled approximately once a month or less). Training will take place Saturday, September 19, 3:00pm in the Social Hall at St. Joseph. Contact Cindy Novak for more information or to volunteer (952) 540-4762 or [email protected])).

Pocas veces vemos a Jesús tan vulnerable. Pedro y los apóstoles escogieron quedarse. ¿Qué vamos a hacer nosotros? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

(Juan 6:60-69).
