HOLY HUMOR The priest was accustomed to receiving unsigned mail from disgruntled parishioners complaining about all sorts of things, But even he was surprised when he opened a letter with no return address and a single screw tumbled onto the table. "After listening to your homily on Sunday," the note read, "I decided you must have lost this." OH, BROTHER! Belly Laughs for Good Humored Catholics By Brother Loughlan Sofield, ST Copyright

*** NEW PARISH MINISTRY *** KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY My name is David Nieto. I am a parishioner here at St. Barnabas Parish. I have been involved with the Kairos Prison Ministry for 13 years and have served approximately 36, 4-day weekends in 6 different prisons since 2005. We go into the prison typically on a Thursday and put on a 4-day course on Christianity that follows the outline of the Catholic Cursillo. We bring the love of Jesus Christ to the inmates and help them to learn how to forgive and be forgiven among other things. Many lives are transformed through this ministry. I am currently helping out to restart the Kairos Prison Ministry in Lompoc Federal Prison. We are trying to finance a 4 day weekend set for October 5th- 8th. Please join me as I host Coffee and Donuts at the Parish Center. If you would like to know more about this Ministry or if you want to donate to our group, please contact me at 310-56-5900 or: [email protected].
RESPECT LIFE
ANNUAL ARCHDIOCESAN CELEBRATION OF CULTURES MASS The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels invites everyone in this annual Mass in celebration not only of our beautiful Catholic Faith, but of the many diverse ethnicities that make up our colorful and vibrant family known as the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The theme of our celebration this year is “Do Not Be Afraid of Holiness.” It is a reminder that by our Baptism “we are called to holiness” to live our lives imitating the teachings of Christ. IT also reminds us that we should stand together with God and neighbor without fear of judgment, strengthened in the knowledge that we are one in God’s love. Join us at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 3:30pm, with a pre-procession beginning at 3pm. Presiding Celebrant: Archbishop Jose H. Gomez For more info, please contact the Office of Ethnic Ministry at 213-637-7356, or see the posters on the bulletin boards inside the Church!
ARCHDIOCESE NEWS
ARCHBISHOP GOMEZ URGES PRAYERS FOR VICTIMS AND NEW EFFORTS TO PURIFY THE CHURCH The recent reports regarding abuse in the Church serve as a reminder of the importance of continuing our efforts to be diligent in the prevention of abuse in our Church and in society. Our prayers and support are with victim-survivors, their families and all impacted by this evil. Archbishop José H. Gomez urges prayers for abuse victims and new efforts to purify the Church: “We are aware that this is a sad and confusing time for the Church in this country. In recent days and weeks, we have heard new revelations about sin and abuse in the Church. This is a time now for prayer and repentance and a time for examining our conscience, especially for those of us who are bishops and priests. And all of us need to pray for every person who has been hurt by the Church, and we need to work to help them heal. Let us ask the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary, the Mother of the Church. May she help us to have the courage we need to purify the Church and renew our love for holiness and our devotion to Jesus Christ and his Gospel.” For more information on the Archdiocese’s policies and protocols concerning abuse prevention, the protection of children and young people, and Victims Assistance Ministry, visit http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/default.aspx.

ANOTHER ASSOCIATE PASTOR Our Parish has been blessed with yet, another NEW Associate Pastor! Let us all welcome someone we know very well, and who has helped us numerous times at our Parish. On behalf of Fr. Antony, Fr. Mike, Staff & All… Welcome to your new home!!!
Dear friends in Christ, I’m glad and blessed to join St. Barnabas family! I came to Los Angeles in 2014 in order to do my studies at LMU. As I have accomplished my purpose of coming, graduating in M. A. Pastoral Theology in 2018, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles
assigned me in St. Barnabas Church as an Associate Pastor temporarily, because I am going to be here until April 2018 only. However, I look forward to learn some pastoral experiences through this great parish for my future ministry in India. I too strongly believe that God has some purpose to bring me over to St. Barnabas that people of God will get some spiritual benefits out of me. I assure you that I will be available for any kind of spiritual and pastoral needs of the parish. My specializations are spiritual direction, lay ministry leadership formation, and pastoral guidance. I have special interest in the ministries of Marian Discipleship and Charismatic Renewal. I ask your special prayers so that this short stay will be a blessed journey to each of us. I thank Fr. Antony Gaspar, pastor, for having been extending his love and support to my priestly life in LA especially providing this chance to serve with him in St. Barnabas. I greatly appreciate all our parishioners for being part of my priestly life. Let us move forward in the love of Mother Mary! “God is good: All the time; Everywhere; and to Everyone!” - Fr. Bernard
WE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE YOU!!!
