Dear parishioners and visitors, We have seen the live reports from the South on the devastating affect that Hurricane Harvey had on our nation. As time goes on, we will hear more deaths and the mounting cost to replace what was there. I cannot imagine anybody not being moved by what they saw. No matter whether or not we know people being affected, our hearts and prayers go out to them. I hope you will respond to the call the United States Council of Catholic Bishops have made for all Catholic parishes to take up a special collection to aid the suffering in the South. Please be generous. God knows what we can give and is pleased with the generosity we show which comes from the heart. Thank you and God bless you. Msgr. Stoetzel The intercession this week is to pray for the suffering from the recent hurricane in Texas and Louisiana. THINKING ABOUT BECOMING CATHOLIC? Are you thinking about becoming Catholic? Curious about the Catholic Church? If so, then the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, commonly called RCIA, might be just for you. RCIA provides a means for people to come and ask their questions and learn about Catholicism in the context of encountering Jesus Christ. RCIA is also a great venue for those who have not completed their Sacraments of Initiation ( Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation). The Cathedral’s first RCIA meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 27, at 6:00 pm. Individuals interested in being a part of RCIA this coming fall are invited to contact the Rectory at 782-0322, ext. 0. HURRICANE HARVEY RELIEF EFFORT The United States Council of Catholic Bishops has asked all parishes to take up a second collection to support the suffering people in Texas from the recent hurricane. This will be done here this weekend (September 9th-10th). If you pay with a check, please make it payable to the Cathedral Parish with the notation of the Hurricane collection. Please be generous in this very serious and emotionally charged situation in Texas and surrounding areas.

CATHEDRAL SENIOR CITIZENS LUNCHEON The next Cathedral Senior Citizens Luncheon will be on Thursday, September 21, at 11:30 am, at the Culina Mariana Café (5250 Justin Road) in the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrim Center. Please R.S.V.P. to Karol at 769-1270.

SOLEMN HIGH MASSES A Solemn High Mass in the Extraordinary Form will be celebrated for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at St. James the Less parish in La Crosse on Thursday, September 14, at 6:00 pm. The celebrant will be Msgr. Joseph Diermeier, who will be assisted by Fr. James Altman and Fr. Michael Klos. For more information, visit the Una Voce La Crosse website at http://unavocelacrosse.org/?p=135. On Tuesday, October 24, at 6:00 pm, His Excellency, Most Reverend Athanasius Schneider, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Maria Santissima in Astana, Kazakhstan, will celebrate a Solemn Pontifical Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. For more information, visit www.guadalupeshrine.org/solemn-pontifical-mass

TEENS4LIFE La Crosse Teens4Life invites you to join us at our first meeting. It will be held on Wednesday, September 13 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm, at Murphy Hall (St. James the Less Church Basement). Open to students grades 7-12. There will be pizza, games, and Pro-Life discussion. Bring your friends!

CATHEDAL GALLERY SINGERS The Cathedral Gallery Singers, the Cathedral’s outstanding adult mixed choir, has a limited number of openings in all four sections available for suitable singers. The 2017–18 choir season begins on September 14. Prospective members should contact Dr. Brian Luckner to schedule a very simple and brief audition. The choir is a friendly and welcoming group, rehearsals are fast-paced and stimulating, and the repertoire is of the highest quality. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 and the choir sings at the 10:30 Sunday Mass, meeting at 9:45. Choir is in session from mid-September through mid-June. Membership is open to singers, generally of high school age and older, who can read music and possess a voice that will blend with our ensemble. If interested, please call 608.782.0322, ext. 232 (leave message).

MASS INTENTIONS

KNIGHTS OF ST. JOSEPH The Knights of St. Joseph pray during the month of September, which is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary, that we unite the sufferings of Christ through union with the special suffering that Our Lady endured because she is the Mother of God. Weekly Message From

The Holy Father suggested that it would be “good for us to think today” about “how my heart is: is it open? Do I know how to receive the gift of comfort, do I ask it of the Lord, and then do I know how to give it to others as a gift of the Lord and as my service?”. And “thus, with these thoughts throughout the day, go back and thank the Lord who is so good and is always trying to comfort us”. Let us remember that God “only asks that the door of our hearts be open, at least a bit, so that he can then manage to find a way to enter”.

FIAT FIAT will meet on Tuesday, September 19, at 6:00 pm, at the Adoration Chapel at Blessed Sacrament Parish. CATHEDRAL PCCW All parish women are members of the PCCW. Women, what time or talent do you have to share? The Cathedral PCCW will be hosting Hospitality Sunday after the morning Masses on Sunday, September 10. Please deliver goodies to the Gathering Area by noon on Saturday, September 9, or prior to the Sunday 7:30 am Mass. The Cathedral PCCW fall meeting is coming up on Monday September 11, preceded by a 5:30 pm social and potluck. Please bring something to share or a dish to pass. The one hour meeting begins at 6:00 pm. We are hoping that special someone will attend to take the position of secretary for our four meetings this year and next. The Cathedral PCCW will be discussing having a beautiful piece of art work of St. Joseph, for the church dining area. Last year the women paid to clean the hall and have the ceiling painted to give it a fresh clean look. The Cathedral PCCW Christmas Bazaar will be Saturday, December 2. New or slightly used items that would be suitable for Christmas gifts may be dropped off in the Church Undercroft. If you are creative and artistic, your crafts and creations are also welcome. Lastly, the Cathedral PCCW can make use of clean empty ice cream buckets for Funeral Luncheons held in the Undercroft. Contact Rita at [email protected]; or call 608/386-5963 if you have ideas, questions, interest.

LA CROSSE CHESTERTON SOCIETY The next G.K. Chesterton meeting will be the third Thursday in September instead of the second Thursday. On Thursday, September 21, from 7:00-9:00 pm, the La Crosse Chesterton Society will be reading and discussing G.K. Chesterton’s book entitled, The Man Who Was Thursday. Come join us at Piggy’s (501 Front St South) in the smokeless smoking room to learn more about Chesterton's 1908 masterpiece, The Man Who Was Thursday. This thriller is a detective story filled with poetry and politics. Gabriel Syme is a poet and a police detective. Lucian Gregory is a poet and a bomb-throwing anarchist. Syme infiltrates a secret meeting of anarchists and becomes 'Thursday', one of the seven members of the Central Anarchist Council. He soon learns, however, that he is not the only one in disguise, and the nightmare begins. What possibly could two poets have in common and yet be so diametrically opposed? This book is available for download at gutenberg.org at no charge; or at Amazon.com in Kindle format for under $1.
