Pastor’s Corner

I met with our parish commission chairpersons Tuesday night. While many of our beloved activities, such as our Wednesday night dinners, are still on hold because of the pandemic, our catechetical and social ministries will be getting back; and that is exciting to see! My next step is to reach out to our Pastoral Council to see what will be the best way to get it meeting again safely and effectively.

The Pastoral Council exists to assist the Pastor in effectively pastoring the flock that Christ and his bishop have given him. While Canon Law technically does not require a Pastoral Council, I see great value in it as the members can give me insight into who is being ministered to and who is being neglected.

One major change being made to the Pastoral Council, though, deals with the administration of our parish finances. Up until now, it seems, the Finance Council has been viewed as just another commission of our Pastoral Council. However, the Finance Council is actually required by Canon Law as its own separate council. Canon 537 states, “In each parish there is to be a finance council… in which the Christian faithful… are to assist the pastor in the administration of the goods of the parish.” The Finance Council exists to hold the pastor accountable in his care for the temporal goods of the parish and his use of parish funds. It is the Finance Council that oversees and approves (or prevents) the spending of parish money.

Therefore, the Building and Maintenance Commission will from now on report to the parish Finance Council since, as Canon Law states, it is the Finance Council that oversee the facilities of the parish, contracts, and major spending. Under Church law (at least since 1983), the Pastoral Council has never had that authority. This will help make the Finance Council more proactive as opposed to the reactive role it had when I arrived.

The Finance Council will still have a presence on the Pastoral Council in order to make sure that our commissions understand the financial state of our parish and to aid them in making proper budgets. I believe setting things up as Church law says, to help us stay on solid financial footing while still ministering to everyone, is the most effective way possible.

ALTAR FLOWERS THIS WEEKEND

The beautiful flowers on the altar of St. Mary Basilica this weekend, August 29 and 30, 2020, are donated by the Family of Mary Williams in loving memory of Mary O’Beirne Williams on the occasions of her

birthday (August 29) and the anniversary of her death (September 1).

May her soul and the soul of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Adoration of Blessed Sacrament Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed at St. Mary Basilica. It begins every Monday immediately following the 12:05 p.m. Mass. Adoration will conclude at 5:20 pm with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Come to a quiet place and spend an hour with Jesus. During Eucharistic Adoration hours,

someone must be in Church at all times. The Blessed

Sympathy We extend our sympathy to Shannan and Conn McCalip and family on the death of Shannan’s grandmother mother Lilly Yelverton on August 21, 2020.

We extend our sympathy to Rose Godfrey, Pat McDonough, and all family members on the death of Rose’s son J. Kevin McDonough on August 22, 2020.

May God be with these families in their time of grief, and may He grant Lilly and Kevin eternal life and peace.

Church P.O. Box to be cancelled When our St. Mary Basilica P.O. Box yearly rental expires in December 2020, the church will no longer have a post office box. All mail will be received at our

street address only effective December 15, 2020.

We are asking all our contributors who mail their weekly/monthly envelopes and contributions to the St. Mary PO Box 1044 either directly or through their banks to please make the change to have their checks mailed instead to 107 S Union St., Natchez, MS 39120 as soon as possible.

Also, we will contact all our vendors to begin sending all invoices/bills to our street address as soon as possible.

We regret the inconvenience that this move might cause, but since the church receives so little church mail through the post office box, we see no need for our church to continue to pay for it.

PICK OF THE WEEK

RCIA –Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

Do you or someone you know have questions about the Catholic Faith or are interested in becoming Catholic?

Have you been away from the practice of the Catholic Faith for a while and need an update?

The RCIA process (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) may be for you. RCIA is for: Adults who have not been baptized. Adults who have been baptized in other church traditions. Catholics needing to complete the Sacraments of Initiation. Catholic adults who have not been confirmed. Catholic adults who need or want to update themselves on Church teaching. Classes will begin the end of September; but in order to plan appropriately, we need to have an idea of how many are interested in attending. If you or someone you know is interested in attending, please contact Ruth Powers at the church office at 601-445-5616 or email her at [email protected].

THE POPE Covering the Biblical evidence for the authority of the Pope, the doctrine of Purgatory, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Saints, the Sacrament of Confession, the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist and more, the remarkable set is an essential resource for answering the various objections that Protestants make to the Catholic Faith.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGON

St. Mary Basilica Parish has begun planning for religious instruction for children in the parish who are not currently attending Cathedral School. In order to make appropriate plans, we need to know who and how many children will be taking part. Although providing religious formation for their children is the responsibility of every parent, it is particularly important that students who will be receiving First Reconciliation, First Communion, or Confirmation any time in the next 2 years be currently enrolled.

Religious Education Options will include the following:

Grades K-5: Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori-based program involving a combination of instruction from a catechist and individualized experiences in the COG Atrium. We have received guidance from the diocese regarding making this work with current guidelines for sanitizing and social distancing, but we need to know how many students will be involved in order to plan.

Grades 6-9: A family-based program using materials ordered by the parish coupled with online resources. An orientation will be provided by the parish. We need to know how many students will be involved in order to order materials.

Grades 10-12: High School students will participate in the RCIA program for one year, followed by participation in the parish Confirmation program.

Please complete the form below and return it to the church office by this Tuesday, September 1, 2020. You can also provide the information by calling the parish office at 601-445-5616 or emailing Ruth Powers at [email protected]

Support our Seminarians!

Six men are currently studying for the priesthood in our diocese. They are the fruit of parishes around the state, including Immaculate Conception West Point, St. Richard Jackson, St. Paul Flowood, St. Joseph Starkville, and Holy Cross Philadelphia.

To support the education of these men the Department of Vocations is hosting the 1st ever Homegrown Harvest Gala and Fundraiser on October 9th at 6:30 PM. This will be a LIVE broadcast. To check it out, all you have to do is log onto one.bidpal.net/homegrownharvest2020. Our keynote speaker will be Fr. Jim Wehner, Rector of Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, and throughout the evening you will hear from Vocation Director Fr. Nick Adam, our seminarians, and more!

The fundraising portion of this event is happening right now! We are looking to raise money for our Seminary Education trust, which supports tuition costs each year for our men and also aids the long term health of the Vocations Department. This is a great way to be in solidarity with men who desire to serve the Church for generations to come. You can support the cause by purchasing digital “tickets” or by sponsoring the event with a larger gift.

Please consider this if you are able, and thank you for your prayers and support of Vocations in our diocese. To give, log onto the website above, and click on “purchase tickets” or “sponsorships” on the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Pray that the Lord sends more laborers into his harvest.

Contact Fr. Nick Adam, Vocation Director with any questions (601-969-4020, [email protected]).

PLEASE PLAN AHEAD FOR MASS Our Sunday Mass crowd is growing, and we want to handle as many people as we safely can.

Make your reservations for Sunday 10:00 a.m. Mass before Sunday. Your reservation will be held until 9:55 a.m. Sunday morning.

During this time of the Coronavirus Pandemic, our elderly people truly need help.

STAPLES FOOD DRIVE NEXT WEEKEND—SEPTEMBER 5 and 6,2020

During the first full weekend of every month, our parish collects staple food items to help feed the elderly needy in the local area. A box will be placed in the vestibule of the church for all food donations during the month.

If you prefer, you may make monetary donations. Please drop all cash/check donations in the mail slot by the Rectory front door or mail your donations to St. Mary Basilica, 107 South Union St., Natchez, MS 39120. [Make checks payable to St. Mary Basilica.]

Although we are very short on almost everything, we are most in need of these food items at this

time: Cornmeal, Grits/Oatmeal, Flour, Powdered Milk Packets, Canned Fruit, Canned Tuna or Meat.

We also request that sugar and flour be donated in 2 pound bags or smaller. Also, vegetable oil should be 16 oz or smaller.

Thank you so much for all donations!

REFLECTIONS: August 30, 2020

22nd Sunday Ordinary Time Whoever wishes to come after me must deny him-

self, take up his cross, and follow me.

—Matthew 16:24

This week’s readings make it clear that discipleship isn’t easy. But they also reassure us that the cost of following Jesus is always a cost worth paying. Even when taking up our cross brings real suffering, God is there, offering us something far greater – the promise of life in all its fullness.

ST MARY BASILICA ANNUAL FINANCE REPORT August 30, 2020

Back on June 30, we finished our fiscal year in the Diocese of Jackson. That’s good timing for me as I hit one year as your pastor on the following day, July 1. Let’s take a look at what we’ve done financially over the last year and where we are headed now. Feel free to consult the nice pie chart on the next page, compliments of our parish Finance Council. As you know, St Mary Basilica is known for its great facilities, especially our beautiful church. Notice that our facilities take up just shy of 50% of our budget. Having older buildings comes at a price. The building that is probably most at risk is the rectory. We are keeping a close watch on cracks and other issues in the building. The Church received roof work last fall (a job that was set up before I arrived). We believe that our leaks are now fixed. Next up for the church is organ repairs. But it is believed that our budget can support that cost. You’ll also notice that the School Subsidy is a good chunk of change. That is actually because the number you see includes two years of subsidy. We had enough cash on hand that we decided to go ahead and pay the subsidy for the 2020-2021 school year. Cathedral School is a ministry of St Mary Basilica and, therefore, the diocese expects us to support the school with a certain percentage of our annual income. While we are still far off of that percentage, I hope to inch closer without killing our bank accounts. Speaking of the diocese, every parish owes a tax to the diocese known as Cathedraticum. This tax is based off of our normal income and therefore fluctuates every year. One way we get discounts on Cathedraticum is by subsidizing our school (another reason why we paid ahead for this school year). Cathedraticum is one of two major sources of income for the diocese to pay its own bills. They don’t have an offertory like us. So we have to support them to pay off their employees and ministries. Unfortunately, a lot of decisions have been made in Jackson that are leading to our insurance costs rising and our interest rates on our savings falling. So that will hurt our budget in the future, but it shouldn’t break us. When the COVID shutdown hit back in March, a lot of parishes saw a drastic decrease in their offertory income. Naturally, Masses were not happening so a basket could not be passed. But thanks to all of you, we did not feel that pinch like other parishes did. You simply found a new way to get your contributions to us, whether it was through mail, personal delivery, or online giving. And for that I am eternally thankful! It is because of your generosity that we are able to keep the lights on, air conditioning flowing, and Sacraments offered in such marvelous buildings! Thank you and please keep it coming so that we can continue to serve you! Our weekly budget for this year is $13,713, up from $11,384.63. Remember the increase to

our insurance, both for our property as well as our employees’ benefits. Also, having two priests instead of one raises costs. But all in all, I know we can handle this if we continue trusting in God and being thankful for what our ancestors handed on to us! Remember that you can still contribute during the offertory at Holy Mass. You can also mail in your contribution or give online at the address listed on our webpage.

It has been an exciting and anxious couple of weeks with school and youth programs starting back. I LOVED

seeing the faces of so many youth this past weekend. It has been far too long! Zoom is wonderful but nothing

beats the ability to connect face-to-face – safely, of course. I continue to pray for all of you to stay safe, stay

focused, and stay faith-filled. We ARE getting through this time of uncertainty – together – and we ARE

weathering this storm (literally this past week) TOGETHER by focusing on God and NOT the storm.

Blessings, Carrie Lambert (Youth Director)

Join me for

“Be Still . . .” – not a class – not a meeting – a journey

To find clues as to the meaning of life, we first look at ourselves. Who am I? Is there more to me than matter? Is there more to us than meets the eye? If you’re just a body, then the satisfaction in life should come from tending to simple bodily needs. Fill your stomach, be comfortable. But there’s more to you then that. You are material and immaterial. And that unseen part of you craves for so much more.

So, what do you seek? What is that deep longing in our hearts all about? We are all living for something, and we all strive for that something out there that is ultimately going to make us happy. But what is it? For some, this question is on their minds every day. For others, life goes by in a flash without even asking the question. (FORMED.org - Search )

REMEMBER YOUR WEEKLY/MONTHLY CHURCH CONTRIBUTIONS

During this Coronavirus pandemic, we thank all our parishioners who have mailed or dropped off their donations to help with our parish’s everyday operating costs. We must still pay our bills! Here are a few alternative suggestions that will help keep much needed offertory support going.

US Mail – simply drop your check in the mail (107 S. Union St., Natchez, MS 39120). Please do not send any payments or correspondence to PO Box 1044 because we are soon going to cancel this box at the Post Office. (See blurb in this bulletin.)

Bill Pay – many banks provide a bill pay service. It is a simple process, and your bank can easily walk you through if you have questions. For many it can be set up on your bank’s website. NOTE: If your payment is being sent by your bank to our Post Office Box 1044, please change the address to 107 South Union St. Natchez, MS 39120.

On-line – go to our website (www.stmarybasilica.org) and set up an online donation by using your credit card, debit card or directly from a checking or savings account.

ACH Draft— St. Mary offers a once per month ACH draft. You no longer need to write weekly or monthly checks or use your offertory envelopes. Please call Mary Flowers at the St. Mary church office (601-445-5616) or email her to set up this service at [email protected] or to change the amount you are currently having drafted.

Thank you for your generosity. We pray that everyone continues to stay healthy during this difficult time. May God bless us all.

MEETINGS and ACTIVITIES REMAIN CANCELLED Although St. Mary Basilica and Assumption Church have begun public Masses, everything else remains cancelled. Our weekly and monthly meetings, exercise programs, parish meals, and other types of gathering continue to be cancelled for the time being. We fully intend to resume all of our parish’s wonderful activities and commission projects as soon as we are confident that we can do so in a safe and healthy manner.

Second Collections September 12-13

*Catholic Church Extension Society Our diocese will take up its annual Catholic Extension collection on September 12-13. The contributions from this collection support more than 11 million Catholics in 86 mission dioceses across the United States. Envelopes are included in the mailed contribution packets. Please give generously.

*Holy Land Collection If you did not make a donation to the Holy Land collection on Good Friday this past April 10, 2020, please consider doing so now. The Holy Father granted, for this year only due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the postponement of the Good Friday Collection until September 13, 2020. This way the Universal Church would be able to ensure the help necessary for the land where the roots of our faith are.

You may make your Holy Land donation by mailing it to the church office, dropping it in the collection basket at Mass, or dropping an envelope labeled “Holy Land” in the mail slot at the Rectory.
