From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Commemoration of 9/11---Some Reflections: Father Joseph Bayne, OFM Conv. Chaplain of the Buffalo Fire Department, wrote about 9/11: “In the days following the tragedy, some said they saw the face of the devil in the smoke at Ground Zero. Many asked me about the same, and my answer hasn't changed in years. No, I did not see the devil's face at Ground Zero. I saw the face of God in the people working, caring, sweating, crying, rescuing, recovering and being very spiritual in their very human-ness. I was moved and changed and felt God's hand in the goodness that followed such tragedy.” As Catholics we believe that God will somehow bring about good despite so much evil in the world. It is fifteen years since that fateful morning when everything changed in this nation and around the world. Our lives have forever been altered. The world has become so much more fragmented and insecure. But we as people of faith and hope, know that God can bring about peace and harmony despite the shocking happenings around the world. God can make the deserts bloom. He can turn the evil in the human heart into tender love. There are three things we could keep in mind on the oc-casion of commemoration of 9/11. One, the human fami-ly with its diverse cultures, religions, and nations is one because we are all human and we are all the children of the one God who is the Father of all, and so we are all brothers and sisters. As a result, we are entrusted with the sacred responsibility of building up unity based on our humanness in the midst of bewildering diversity. Two, the world has become so much smaller because of the means of connectedness. No more can anyone be indif-ferent to sad conditions like poverty, hunger, injustice, violence, and suffering in any part of the world because they touch all peoples and nations. We might as well has-ten to eliminate suffering anywhere and everywhere in the world. Or else no one can live in peace and harmo-ny. Three, we recognize the “wheat and the weeds” in the world. It is a mixture of good and evil. Evil might appear to win but ultimately good triumphs. We have to fight evil with all the power within our means, but the best way to fight it is to fill the world with good. Repair My Church (RMC) Phase II: Please do keep this project in your minds and prayers. You’ll find the job description of Phase II in the bulletin. Archdiocesan Annual Appeal: We still have to raise about $8,000 to make our goal of $64,620.00. Please do-nate so that we can together help the Archdiocese fulfill its Christ-given mission.

Word of God: Luke 15 from which we read the gospel passage this Sunday is one of the most beautiful chapters in the whole Bible. We read today the two parables of the lost sheep and lost coin. There is one more parable in this chapter: of the lost son, the prodigal son, who is loved and forgiven by his father. The message in these parables is that we stray from God’s ways, but God is a persistent lover who pursues us with passion and desire and restores us to ourselves and to community. Peace Quotes: “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each oth-er…..Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater rich-es and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world.” --- St. Teresa of Calcutta. “Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding.” --- Ralph Waldo Emerson. “Lord, bid war's trumpet cease; Fold the whole earth in peace.” --- Oliver Wendell Holmes. “Let us love the world to peace.” --- Eileen Elias Freeman. “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.” --- Nelson Mandela. “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” --- Buddha. “Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where these is hatred, let me sow love.” --- Francis of Assisi. A Story About Peace: A crow once flew into the sky with a piece of meat in its beak. Twenty other crows set out in hot pursuit and began to attack it viciously. When the crow finally dropped the meat, its pursuers left it alone and flew off shrieking after the morsel. Said the crow: “I’ve lost the meat and gained this peaceful sky.” Said a Zen monk, “When my house burnt down I got an unobstructed view of the moon at night!” Why don’t you try a Haiku?: “Haiku” is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. Here’s my little “religious” Haiku: “Lake Galilee shores, I pick pebbles His feet smoothed, Stony heart no more!” You want another Haiku from me? Here it is: “Rain on lotus leaves, Silver sliding and slipping, Life free flow-ing love.” Have fun! Try a few Haiku poems! You could write one each day. You’d love it. Your friend & pastor, Fr. Charles Puthota
