Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2015
SS. Simon and Jude
A Stewardship Parish 8 Cavanaugh Court West Chester, PA www.simonandjude.org
WMOF ~World Meeting of Families Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive ~ Choosing Life
We began this catechesis by explaining that God made us for a reason. The God we
meet in Jesus Christ loves us, and calls us to love as he does. Marriage is the
sacrament that brings human fertility into this mission of love. If we understand that
love is our mission in our marriages, families, and parishes, then we have learned a
basic truth that will shape many other areas of life. For example, if fidelity to the covenant requires restraint
and perseverance, if our bodies and the material world can be vessels of divine grace, then we can approach
questions of sexuality, ecology, technology, and medicine with renewed commitment and insight. We now
realize why a catechesis on the family has actually been a catechesis for all of life. If we have learned to think
of our families as domestic churches, if we have learned why moral individualism is not the right context for
receiving Catholic teaching, then we have adopted a view that will reorient our whole identity. This mission is
not reserved for the few or for the extraordinary. Nor does it mean that families somehow have to stop being
themselves or seek after some impossible perfection in order to witness to the Gospel. It may mean that we
are sometimes minorities in a secular culture that sees life differently. But the Church has wide experience of
many different cultural contexts, offering wisdom and advice about spiritual practices to sustain us. Please see
the catechism for more details. Love is our origin and destiny, which is why only the way of love can truly
satisfy, and that is why Love is Our Mission.
~ Christopher C. Roberts, catechism editor

“Forsake foolishness that you may live;
advance in the way of understanding” (Book of Proverbs 9)
To be “foolish” implies a lack of good judgment. Wisdom, on the other hand, is understanding or
having knowledge of what is true, and then living accordingly. There are many different quotations from
various people attempting to capture the difference between being wise and being foolish. Mark Twain is
quoted as saying: “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it
and remove all doubt”. Benjamin Franklin said, “Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and
most fools do”.
The difference between a fool and a wise person may be very slight as captured in this quotation:
“Every person is a fool for at least five minutes every day; wisdom consists in not exceeding the limit”. (Elbert Hubbard)
Throughout human history, in so many different ways, God communicates to us his desire that we
live as wise people, reflecting a knowledge of the truth. The Church, in its teaching authority and the life
of the faithful, communicating God’s Wisdom through prayer-filled contemplation of Sacred Scripture and
the Sacramental life, tries to live in God’s ways.
Since we are all limited and finite human beings, it is humbling to realize that we don’t operate per-
fectly. Mistakes are made, sins committed, weakness are on display. That’s why we always are in need of
God’s forgiveness and the forgiveness of one another. So maybe God’s Inspired Word through St. Paul could help us this week:
“Watch carefully how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise
…do not continue in ignorance …be filled with the Spirit
…giving thanks always”. (Ephesians 5)
