do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons andexamples to support your answer.

People study in college or university for many different reasons. I think the mostimportant reason is to gain more knowledge and learn more skills. Of course, thereare also many other reasons that people study in college such as to get more friends, and increase one's self-confidence.

These days, most jobs require people who are educated and have good job skills. Therefore, the people who want a good job have to study hard and at least graduatewith a high education. Furthermore, as technology advances all over the world, moreand more education is required of people.

Some people who study in college or university want to make more friends andincrease their interpersonal skills. They enjoy their lives in university or college andtend to socialize a lot. They can meet more people who have the similar interestswith themselves. They can go to uni ball after school and make more friends whothey trust.

The people who graduate from college seem more confident in our community. Thesepeople are more respected by society. Many people want to be respected and to beimportant by family, friends, their bosses, and others in their lives. They find thatmost of them can confidently talk and do their jobs as they are more educated. Therefore, most people want to get the confidence through the university or collegestudy.

In today's society, people need more knowledge and skills to be adapted. Theuniversity and college study is a good way to achieve this.

Obviously, the first teachers we have in our lives in most cases are our parents. Theyteach us to walk, to speak, and to have good manners before we reach "the realworld." More than even the professional teachers that we have in school, parents aregenerally the most involved in the development and education of children.

Almost for sure our parents are the best teachers at the beginning of our lives, which

actually corresponds to the parents' role in nature. Parents are most committed andinvolved in teaching their children; they have a kind of instinct to sacrifice a part ofthemselves for the betterment of their children. They love us and have great patiencewhile passing down their knowledge to us. They wish us a success and thus will notteach us bad things. And of course, implicit learning occurs when childrenunconsciously copy some of their parents' habits and styles of behavior.

During the second stage of child development, adolescence, parents can still be in thebest position to offer advice even though the children might not accept it. In thiscase, perhaps the child's friends would be the best teachers. Adolescents arenotoriously rebellious in many cultures and may automatically reject any advice from

their parents. My first marriage for instance, was solely a matter of doing theopposite when my parents tried to intrude in offering their advice. So in suchmatters, parents should be much more flexible and be rather the partners with theirchildren. So we can see that being a teacher of growing child become more and morecomplicated case as the time passes and many parents are simply not able to meetthe increased demands.

On the other hand, I would say that parents are not professional teachers and theytend to be very biased by their love of their children. So wishing good things and aneasy life may prevent children from maturation. In any case, parents usually canpresent only one viewpoint of the world, while good teaching should be based ondifferent attitudes. Thus, when children go to school and have a great diversity ofteachers, they learn much more than their parents could probably give them.Furthermore, once our parents get older, they become more conservative and cannotalways be objective in regard to modern trends and fashions. Thus we need to taketheir advice with caution during that period. However, some kind of intuition which Ibelieve shared between relatives about what everybody needs and great love whichexists in a families still makes our parents very good teachers and advisers at anytime.

In conclusion, while parents are not the ideal teachers, and well-rounded children willgenerally need a great diversity of teachers in their lives in order to have a moreaccurate view of the world, parents are generally the most committed of all teachersand have the greatest emotional investment in their children and their future.

Man, through the ages, has undergone many changes, from a period when he huntedfor his food to the present era when man is dependent on preprocessed foods. Duringthis period not only has man changed his mode of eating but his whole lifestyle aswell. In pursuit of more in this competitive world, man no longer has time as he oncehad. He is caught in a race against the clock. A person who finishes more in lessertime is considered more efficient. This pressure to do more in less time has affectedhis eating habits as well and, as a result, man no longer has time to cook food. Earlyman's only objective was to seek food to sustain him and his family. Nowadaysfinding food has taken a back seat to other priorities, such as career and education.

Food is no longer of that importance. This is not an encouraging trend. People are toodependent on preprocessed or precooked food, which no longer has the freshness itonce had. Such foods loose their mineral and vitamin content and are not as healthyas fresh food. That is why the number of diseases is also rising. People have also

shifted to high calorie content food like French fries, pizzas, and ice cream, etc.,which is causing obesity, fatigue, etc. As man is becoming busy and too involved inhis busy schedule, he has no time even to take care of his own personal needs.

Furthermore, cooking is an art which is dying out. People once enjoyed cooking . Itwas a means of eliminating stress and tension. People were once able to relax duringthis time and reflect on their lives.

People may tend to argue that by using precooked and preprocessed food they areefficiently using time and can use this precious time saved for other purposes. But isit really worth it? This is a question whose answer can invite much speculation about

It is actually making our lives not simpler but more complicated. We have lost many of the simpler things in our lives, like the simple acts of selectingour evening meal, preparing it, and enjoying it with our loved ones, and we are worseoff for it.

People always are learning and practicing through their whole lives. From readingwords in text book such as toy, car, train etc., people have the concept and ideas. They further understand the actual meaning of these words by playing toys andriding or driving cars, trains etc.

Education (books) and experience are the main two channels for People to gain theirknowledge. Each play different roles for people. In my opinion, knowledge fromexperience is more important than that from books.

Experience first can prove if the knowledge form books are true or false. Textbooksare very wonderful in teaching people essential principles, how is the world lookslike? what is the basic law of change of people and things? We can learn a lot throughprimary school, secondary school until university. However, people can onlyunderstand the really meaning of those form books and justify them if they are rightthrough practices. A few hundred years ago, people learnt from text book that theearth was flat. However scientists found that was wrong through observations andmeasurement.

The knowledge from experience can improve and advance

the world and our society. As books have limitation, they only teach us the whatpeople found in the past. The knowledge from the books are constrained to thecertain conditions and environment. For example, mould and tools design for plasticsindustry, the university course only taught me very simple cases, most knowledgeare obtained from various different and complicated cases in my career.

There are a lot new inventions and new products which could not be found fromtextbooks. Our society and world are developed through continuous practices, thoseknowledge, never found in books, such as internet, e-business etc. are all developedthrough new practices.

"The truth comes from practices and experience", people are continually discoveringnew things and assessing the creditability of the knowledge written in books. Theknowledge from experience help us much more than those from books.

I am from Arroz e Feijao, a small town in the northeast of Brazil. Building a factory inthere will bring a lot of advantages and disadvantages, but I believe that Arroz eFeijao will mostly benefit from the building of a new factory because it is largely

populated by poor people and the factory would bring many benefits to this smalltown. However, of course, a factory has disadvantages as well.

As you know, factories usually bring pollution. If this factory is not managed veryeffectively and efficiently according to specific rules, it's prone to polluting the localair and water. What's more, factories usually make noise. Beside clean drinkablewater and fresh air, an ideal community should be quiet. If the factory cannotmaintain this situation to the community, it will not last long. A factory that is toonoisy or pollutes too much will eventually be relocated to a new area.

On the other hand, a factory could bring a lot of benefits to the community. So Iwould support the plan to build a factory to my community for all the reasons I willdescribe below.

First of all, the factory's construction will surely improve the local infrastructure. To

run smoothly, the factory will have to have a steady, reliable supply of water andelectricity. Some old pipes will be changed, and some facilities will be renovated. Theresidents' living standard get improved as a result of these widespread changes, animportant benefit in Arroz e Feijao, where many people do not have access to cleanwater.

Secondly, to make the employee commute more convenient, the local roads will haveto be rebuilt and broadened, resulting in improved public transportation. The town'sresidents can take a public bus to go shopping or go to work. As a result, air pollutionand fuel consumption might be reduced.

Most important, a factory's establishment will bring up a lot of employmentopportunities for the community. A factory need experts from various fields. Theresidents can take just a few minutes to go to the factory to work. So, the local

residents can get great benefits from this factory.Generally speaking, I agree with the plan to build a factory near my community. Ifthe factory can be managed successfully, the factory and local residents can havemutual benefit.

If there is a this said service people in my home townmust not necessarily commute to a far place to do their job. This in turn would meanless traffic jams, spacious work place, more time for family and recreation and so on.

The way people learn would be another important thing that a fast, free and reliableinternet service could better in my home town. People will have the chance to gothrough tremendous and different information resources in a very small amount oftime. They, apparently will also take less time to share it. This assures a morefulfilled life for my home town people.

I know that my husband has not returned from workyet, simply because his car is not in the garage. I am alone. I carefully check all therooms, almost expecting something to happen suddenly. I hold my bag in my handas if it were a weapon. After the whole house has been declared clear, I start tobreathe normally again and a smile appears on my face as I realize, once again, howa simple movie seen at the cinema a week earlier can modify my actions.

Sometimes I wonder if I should watch TV, with all its shows that make me wonderwhether I exercise enough, whether I am slim enough, or whether I treat my petswith the care they deserve: am I really concerned about their mental health??? Notto mention the hundreds of commercials that try to make me believe I need a waterpurifier to remain alive since the water I am currently drinking is heavily polluted! And countless are the times when I have heard people talking by quotations learnedfrom movies We need to watch shows and films to know what to say, how to be,how to act. We are so addicted to all this that it almost seems like we cannot think onour own.

I cannot help thinking about what happened to me some days ago, an example thatclearly shows what kind of power TV has over people. My husband and I were in arestaurant when I heard my young neighbor pronouncing violent words in a lowangry voice. Surprised, I turned to better understand the situation and I saw that hewas holding a fake military device and was acting as if he were filming a war movie. Iam sure that if I had been a little be more updated about this type of movie, I wouldhave recognized what he was saying as a quotation. Now, I wonder if he uses such a

language also with his friends and with his parents, if he is aggressive, and if so,whether his attitude has really nothing to do with what he watches on TV.

That same evening on the way home I saw two cars stopped one next to the other ata traffic light and as soon as the light turned green they started racing, in the middleof town. In this case not even a major knowledge of movies and TV programs wouldhave helped me: there are just to many of them on the market showing the exactsame thing: people racing with cars.

I am sure that everybody, if asked, could easily list many other examples of how TVand movies can modify our behavior and therefore our life but, I wonder, if we will

Topic 8: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television

has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specificreasons and examples to support your opinion.

    Score: 5.0 to 6.0

Television is undoubtedly one of the most powerful means of communication in thehistory of humankind, rivaled only by such other forms of communication as theInternet, the telephone, movies, and, of course, simple, low-tech speech. Television, with its wide availability and rich media with image and sound, is difficult to ignoreand even seductive in its appeal. Television is as much a part of our lives as are ourmeals, work, or school; studies consistently show that the average American childspends almost as much time watching television as she does in school. Furthermore, because television is so rich in its media, it often requires our full attention or is more

attraction to us than are our daily lives. Naturally, the more time one spendswatching television, the less time she has with her family and friends. Thus, we canclearly see why some have claimed that television has been harmful forcommunication among family and friends. However, I believe that, while televisionhas been somewhat harmful in its effects, it has hardly "destroyed" communicationamong family and friends for most people, although for some, this may be true.

Most people much prefer spending time with their families and friends to spendingtime watching television. Television is of course an important part of many people'slives, but most people would gladly choose family and friends over television werethey given the choice. Furthermore, most educated people are aware of thedeleterious effects of too much television and either avoid excessive time watchingtelevision, or actually do not enjoy it. I, for example, after a long day at work, wouldmuch rather spend time talking with my wife and playing with my children than I

would watching some unrealistic portrayal of life on television. For me and my family, our time together is precious and beautiful, and could never be replaced or hurt bytelevision.

Furthermore, the effect of television is simply not so great that it could be said tohave "destroyed" communication among family and friends. Granting thatcommunication among family and friends in industrialized countries has decreased inrecent years, it might be tempting to blame this problem on television since its riseroughly coincided with the decrease in time we spend with our families. However, Ibelieve this situation is more likely due to increased pressures relating from work, school, and the economy. In my case, for example, I find that my pressures fromwork are so great that I must often sacrifice time at home so that I can meet thechallenges of running my own business. Many of my friends are in similar situations--my best friend, for example, has just finished law school, which took about sixty

hours a week of his time. In a word, people nowadays have very little time foranything, but television is not the cause--it is increased desire to succeed.

In some situations, however, television has surely contributed to a decrease incommunication among family members. In my childhood in the countryside, I oftensaw parents and children watching television for hours on end, rarely speaking withone another. It seemed for them that television was a way to escape from their sad, miserable existence. However, even in this case, I would say that television merelycontributed to the bad situation, but did not cause it; were television not existent,

surely these people would have found other escapes, alcohol or gambling, forexample. In other words, people always find a way to do what they want to do.

In short, I do not believe that television has destroyed or even harmed interpersonalcommunication among most people. Most people realize that television is merely atemporary diversion and do not use it to replace interpersonal communication. Ibelieve that the damage attributed to television is greatly exaggerated and that suchdamage is most likely attributable to other more powerful social factors.

Topic 9: Some people prefer to live in a small town. Others prefer to live in a

big city. Which place would you prefer to live in? Use specific reasons anddetails to support your answer.

    Score: Unrated

Where should we live? Some may choose to live in big cities, while other like thenatural and quiet surroundings in countryside. As far as I am concerned, I would liketo live 'in a big city because living in a big city has more advantages than living incountryside.

To begin with, the city is the symbol of human civilization and there are a manyfacilities for living, recreation and health care. Therefore, living there is moreconvenient than living in countryside. For example, we can find a plenty of mallsaround our neighborhood, where we can buy everyday necessities at a low price.Further more, people concern more about their health and safety than other things intheir lives. In big cities, medical facilities and emergency services are easilyaccessible than in countryside. Big cities also have convenient transportation andutility systems. They also offer faster Internet connections. These all make our lifeeasier in big cities.

In addition, we can take part in a variety of events in big cities. Human being likes tolive together and need to interact with each other. In a big city, the population

density is high therefore there are always plenty of social activities, sports events andconcerts. There are more recreational places in big cities, such as opera houses, movie theatres, clubs, and swimming pools. You will have many kinds ofentertainment in big cities, and meet many people. In countryside, however, the lifemay be dull and quite, and you may only have a few neighbors. Living alone with fewactivities can easily cause mental diseases.

Some may argue that the pollution in cities makes people sick. However, withautomobiles and modern highways we can easily take a break to expose to fresh airin countryside and sunshine on the beach.

In conclusion, I strongly hold that living in big cities is much better than living 'incountryside because of the advanced facilities and social activities in cities. Moreover, the autos and highways enable us to enjoy the natural and quiet surroundings in

I fully agree with the claim that there is no correlation between success and luck. Moreover, I understand success to refer to ones ability to achieve the predominantpart of his goals in his lifetime, which in turn leads to a correlation between successand income since the accomplishment of such a natural goal as to provide a goodfuture for your loved ones demands the means. What is the simplest and most lawfulway to earn enough to consider yourself a successful person? To receive a good

education and to find a good job. Both receiving an education and making a careerpresuppose ones readiness to work hard, and success without hard work is simplynot possible for the vast majority of the world's population. The reasons andexamples listed below will strengthen my point of view.First of all, considering an education and a career as key factors of success, one willchoose to pursue a degree from a college or a university. One wishing to be admittedto the university will have to take several tests. It is doubtful that someone will be solucky that knowing nothing, he could pass the test with a high score. A low scoremeans failure, and that test taker will not likely be admitted. Therefore, in order tobe successful, one should prepare for the tests and work hard, because a goodeducation will provide him with a good job and an opportunity to accomplish some ofhis goals and dreams. In my lifetime, I have never met a person who could graduatefrom a college without working hard.

Secondly, it is impossible to make a career if one is indolent and lacking knowledge,at least in developed countries. Luck plays no role in achieving this success. Even ifsomeone was unbelievably lucky enough to become a manager not being qualifiedenough, he will be asked to resign in the near future because of his inability due tolack of knowledge and experience to make right decisions. For instance, I used towork for a very small company owned by a friend. This company was later closedbecause of bankruptcy. The cause of bankruptcy was wrong strategies and decisionsmade by the owner. After the failure, he went to a university and worked for anothercompany so that he could obtain experience and become a successful businessman.Nowadays, he considers himself a successful person because he had turned intoreality his two biggest dreams of producing consumer goods of high quality andmaking charitable donations to needy people.

In sum, as long as someone understands success as an ability to turn into reality

some of his dreams and goals, he will have to work hard because he will needmoney. And his chances to earn that money will remarkably increase if he couldgraduate from a college and make a career. All of these things are simply notpossible without hard work. Luck has no place in such a scheme of events.

In the first place, an obvious advantage to spend more money on libraries is thatenormous libraries can help us save a huge amount of money, paper resource and

the time to seek study materials from a far bookstore. As we all known, the prices ofbooks are more expensive than before, while we have to read more books to catch upwith the high-tech era. Moreover, now many students are still too poor to go toschool, therefore libraries become the cheapest places to provide useful knowledgefor them. Just imagine these poor persons can enjoy a varieties of books in acomfortable environment with enough light and a quiet study atmosphere. How

happy they are!Secondly, another reason why I disagree is that the chief goal of university educationis to teach students working skills. Obviously, libraries provide more usefulinformation to students than sports activities do. For example, more and morelibraries are also equipped with computers which can encourage students to surf theNet to widen their horizons. Without the Internet, there will be less chances to makefriend with the foreigners and catch the latest worldwide information. On thecontrary, sports activities are just limited in a small area and a few of friends in somedegree.

However, I don not deny that sports activities can provide chances to develop somegood characteristics, such as cooperation. But frankly speaking, it is a bit wasteful tospend too much money on sports activities, when we can attain enough freeexercises, such as running, which gain the same advantages as well. Furthermore, students are easily obsessed by the activities and overlook their studies. For instant,I once used so much study time to play basketball that I failed to go up to the nextgrade. Although I earned some awards of basketball matches at that time, I feel veryregret. In fact, numerous students have the similar stories because of the attractionof the sports activities.

In conclusion, I firmly disagree with the idea that universities should give the samesum of money to their students' sports activities as they give to their universitylibraries. Nevertheless we are sure that both universities libraries and proper sportsactivities are valuable. Anyway, to avoid students playing overtime and ignoring theirhomework should be concerned. Is it wise to spend more money on universitieslibraries?

As we have known, museums can help us know thehistory, the customs and the most representative products of that place.

Different place has a different history. And the most convenient way to know the

history is to visit the local museum. Last year when I traveled to Xi'an, an old city inChina, I went to the history museum to explore the course of its development. Withthe background knowledge provided by the museum, I found that it was easier forme to understand the city. So the museum can clear away the barriers betweentourists and the city by making them familiar with its history. To a tourist, the mostattractive part of a place is usually its customs, which can be demonstrated by thelocal museum. In the Beijing custom museum, the real life of typical Beijing is vividlyshown. I have always enjoyed cooking for other people and let them praise me for it. It hasbeen an extra bonus because I find cooking therapeutic as well. After coming from aexhausting day of work from the office, it is fun to be your own boss in the kitchen. Ican do whatever I want to do and do not have to ask for any permission or worryabout if I am doing everything right. It is the fact that I know what I am good at itmakes me feel exuberant.

But apart from this, cooking at home and eating with the rest of the family at the endof the day has been a tradition in the old generation. A tradition that more and morepeople are forgetting these days. We are so busy with our own lives that we are nolonger interested with the lives or our near and dear ones. So I think the best way tocatch up with the rest of the family with over a nice cozy dinner and sipping warmwine.

Eating at one of those classy restaurants means that you have to be dressed properly

with black jacket and white shirt. If you go to one of the Chinese restaurants that isjust round the corner, it is always noisy when all you want is quite and peace aroundyou. Sometimes the food is not even up to standard, sometimes your favourite dishis not available any more.

In my opinion, compulsory attendance is better than having no requirement to attend all the lessons

on-campus.There are two points of view to this question. First, one side will say that universitystudents are adults and should be able to manage their time as they see fit. Thispoint of view says that sometimes, in todays busy world, people need flexibility tomanage their lives. For example, many single parents who are trying to earn theircollege degrees will sometimes need to skip a class because of the demands of theirother responsibilities. However, I believe that the great majority of college studentsare young and single, and have few responsibilities, and that they need the disciplineand structure of a system that requires attendance. Young people who have just goneoff to college are notorious for the excesses to which they enjoy their freedom.

There are many negative situations caused by the free-attendance system. The mostharmful one is the economic waste for both universities and students. Many studentswho do not attend classes regularly are likely to suffer decreased performance ontheir exams and therefore waste their time in college. They, generally, do not feelpanic because of the failures or restudying the same subjects for the second time. However, this sometimes costs a fortune to both parents and the government that

have created tax-funded subsidies for education for each student every year. Notonly are the university fees wasted, but also the money for accommodations andother spending are also wasted.

On the other hand, students who are required to attend classes regularly have notime to waste in pubs or clubs. Nor can they spend these young years, which aremore valuable to them to learn and think than any other period in their lives, ongambling or drinking. I do not mean they are only to study without any break orentertainment. Their social life is as necessary as studying during the hard academicyears, yet, the amount of each should be balanced well. More spare time thannecessary encourages the young to ignore studying and classes. Thus, neither theuniversities nor the students do their best if the students have too much freedom notto study.

To sum up, many teenagers are not able to think sensibly to decide when to studyand when to enjoy with friends. A scheduled chart of classes which have a hugenumber of options that are necessary to identify the best fitting one for each student, will help them to construct an ideal campus life including leisure activities. Inaddition, this will stop the waste of time and money and is likely to reevaluate thehigher education system in several years. In short, I believe that the majority ofcollege students are too young to manage their time responsibly and that universitiesshould therefore impose strict rules on attendance.

When this happened Iwas staying at the balcony with my father, so we rushed out of the house and tookour neighbor to the hospital. If we came ten minutes later she would had died. That'swhy I think a neighbor must be a good friend that would always help you.

If you have a neighbor with good manners, being neighbors becomes a pleasure forboth of you. A day begins batter if you get a "Good morning" from a smiling and niceperson.

One reason for supporting the building of the new restaurant is that after therestaurant will be built, I will not have to spend a lot of time in order to go to arestaurant. Since my neibourhood is pretty far from the city's center I have to driveseveral hours until I find a good restaurant. The result is that I, as well as the othermembers of the neighborhood, go only to restaurants only in special occasions (forinstance, in birthdates). When the restaurant will be built I will have the opportunityto go to restaurants more often, the way other people from other neigborhoods do.

In addition, the restaurant may offer work for the students who live in ourneighborhood. If the restaurant will be successful, it will naturally need a lot ofwaiters. When I joined Grad school I wasoverwhelmed by the enormous size of the syllabus which was to be covered in ashort period of six months i.e. one semester. In most cases even the syllabus is notclearly defined. In such a case it becomes essential for an individual like me to have aguiding force who can give a sense of direction to my studies. The people using public transportation depend on policies of each governmentsthat support this way or not. For all above reasons, I strongly recommend thatgovernments should spend more budget on improving public transportation.

Some people prefer living in a big city; others enjoy residing in a small town or in thecountryside. Children usually do not have a choice and live where their parentschoose to live. Both living in a big city and living in the countryside have someadvantages and disadvantages for childrens development. In my opinion, living in abig city is more beneficial for children because it offers more choices in education, services and fun activities.

Most of us agree that education is crucial for our children. Often, when a family residein the countryside, there is only one neighbourhood school in the area. On thecontrary, there are plenty of educational choices in a big city: French schools, privateschools, Montessori centres, and, of cause public school.

Another reason for me to believe that living in a big city is better for children is ahigher level of availability of different services. From my personal experience of living

in a small town in northern Ontario I can say that it was a problem to find a dentist orfamily physician in the area, so we had to travel up to fifty kilometres in order to gethelp.

Last, but not least is that living in a big city offers a variety of extracurricularactivities: sports, arts, hobby clubs, dance schools, gyms, and many more. I stronglybelieve that those activities are very important for childrens development.

In conclusion, no doubts that living in the countryside have some advantages;however, in my opinion, growing children are much more benefited living in a bigcity. They have more opportunities to get good education, to receive services theyneed, and to have quality fun time.

Othersbelieve that children may grow up in a big city for many aspects. however before onedecides to support or oppose one of the above two opinion, he/she should carefullyconsider the all aspects and reasons concern that subject.

Children have to grow up in the countryside for many different reasons. First, thecountryside contains vast green areas of fields . these fields take part in purificationthe air from any pollution, consequently, children can breathe fresh and healthy air.Second, Parents may not worry about their children when they are playing in the

farms and fields. This is because, there is no any dangerous things, such as cars, trains or uncovered electric wires that may hurt children in these fields. Third, livingin the countryside may stimulate the hide talents of children. for example, childrenmay like to draw or paint what they see, therefore the viewing of green land maymake children how to express themselves by drawing and painting.

On the other hand, children may grow up in a big city for many aspects. First, parents may want their children to grow in the urban city to let them live in feel theprosperity and advancement of their country second by second from the beginning oftheir life. Second, living in the big city may make the growing of children so easy. For

example, in the big city parents can find a suitable baby care center for their childreneasily. They can also find modern schools in which their children can go. Third, parents can find excellent hospitals in which their children can go if they get sick.

Even though growing it is better for children to grow up in the countryside or villagefor many different reasons, children may grow up in the big city for other aspects. Inmy own opinion, I believe that it is better for children to grow up in the big city forthe following reasons. First, in the big city a mother can find easily a reliable personwho loves her kids during her work outside the home. Second, living in the urban citymay help children in growing in a social atmosphere. for example, in the big citythere are a lot of children who can play together. In conclusion, growing of children inthe big city is better than the countryside. at last, can you imagine the populationdensity in the big city if all parents suddenly decide to leave the city and go to thecountry sides to let their children grow up there? Of course, I know your answer!!!

A greater number of people are now hitting the eighty-year mark than ten years ago.In fact, the life expectancy of the average human has gone up considerably, and isrising still. This phenomenon is the result of several reasons.

For one, continuing scientific and medical innovation ensure that more people receivethe treatment they require. As our knowledge grows regarding various diseases, webecome better equipped to tackle them. Consequently, we have managed toeradicate some diseases on a global scale, while controlling the other diseases, sothat the rate of mortality does not reach an alarming height during the outbreak of adisease. The plagues of yore, as well as the more recent plague outbreaks arebecoming few and far in between. Such control of diseases means that the generallife expectancy has gone up.

Diseases such as cancer, which used to result almost inevitably in death, are nowcurable, provided they are diagnosed at a certain stage. Diseases such astuberculosis and cholera now cause fewer deaths than they used to only a fewdecades ago.

Another reason for the greater life expectancy is the general betterment of thequality of life. What we call the global village is fast becoming a city. And in this city, more and more people are being provided a better level of hygiene than ever before.

A better and improving system of communication ensures that the latest medicaldiscoveries in the United States and Europe are known all over the world in a spaceof a few days. Therefore, more and more people have access to better health care.Even people living in relatively remote areas have access to some kind of medicalfacilities. Though these facilities may be incapable of handling a crisis, they may helpprevent death in cases that require antibiotics and antivenin, thereby preventingdeath by infection or poison.

The increase in awareness also means that people in general are becoming moreaware of the risks of various diseases. For instance, more people now, than twodecades ago, are aware of the scourge of cholesterol and the havoc it wreaks on anindividuals circulatory system. Similarly people are becoming aware that preventionis, after all, better than cure and are taking the appropriate steps to prevent infection

from diseases. In general, though, the increased life expectancy owes much to the revolution incommunication. It may be mentioned that even two hundred years ago, inventionsand discoveries were being made. However, they did few people any good. It simplytook too long to disseminate the information. The general level of awarenessregarding health was also low. However, it has been noticed that since the inceptionof communication through first print, and then radio and television, the level ofawareness regarding health has generally risen. To illustrate, print facilitated thespread of knowledge through books. Radio helped bring that knowledge to manypeople. Television helped to further this knowledge and disseminate is amongst aneven greater number of people.

And finally, the Internet has removed the final barriers between intercultural and

    interracial communication.

In the coming years, we may hope to see an even greater increase in life expectancy, even as communication techniques continue to improve.

79 years old. Comparing to that ten years ago, it has been increased by 10%.Advancement in technology, better lifestyle and nutritional diets are the main reasonsfor prolonged lives.

Advancement in technology helps to bring about new methods of curing fataldiseases. Cancer used to have no cure in the last decade, but recently new methodssuch as X-ray treatment and various types of injections are introduced which cangreatly extend the patients' lives. Advancement in technology also improves thequality of medical instruments. This lowers the risk and minimizes the possible sideeffects of various operations.

People nowadays are having better lifestyle than in the past. They are more aware ofthe importance of healthiness. Compulsory annual body checks help to prevent thecondition to worsen and the spread of diseases. People become more depending ontheir family doctors when they are sick instead of consuming medicine that is notgiven by their doctors. They also learn to maintain a suitable amount of workload andtake breaks in order to be healthy psychologically. This can minimize the chances ofgetting the diseases that are stress related such as heart attack.

Balanced diet is not only a motto for people who are keeping fit, but also applies tothe general public. People become more aware of the choice of food. They start to

pay attention to the nutritional values of food. This can serve as a guideline toprevent people from overeating certain types of food and ignoring the nutritionalfood. It can therefore improve the healthiness of the public as a whole. It can alsoreduce the chances for malnutrition and can help extend the life span of humanbeings.

To conclude, advancement in technology and raising awareness in healthy lifestylehelp to extend the life span of human beings. We can predict that in the future, people can live longer and healthier, and more methods of curing diseases will beintroduced.

To explain the fact that people are living longer now, I will use 3 hypothesis. The firstreason that can explained that is the lifestyle of people that is less difficult now. Ananother reason could be the variety and the quality of the food that's better todayand a third reason could be the improvement of the medicine science.

Since 100 years, lifestyle has become easier for people. Take for example thelaundry. Women took twelve hours to clean clothes of a small family. Today, womenor men just have to put clothes in the laundry machine and it will be done in onehour.

Today, we eat fruit and vegetables all year long. We eat fresh salmon or other fisheach week. If we want to serve a big roast beef for diner, we just have to go to thegrocery store and buy one. It was impossible to eat an orange each week or to usecitrus in a receipt in January because they was not easily available in Canada in

winter.Medicine was incredibly improved in comparison with what it was 100 years ago.Today doctors have new drugs like penicillin to cure ill-people. They can easily curepneumony or other infections. Furthermore, to cure very sick people, doctors can, forexample, transplant new hearts or make complicate surgeons.

In conclusion, I think that people are living longer now because the lifestyle ingeneral is easier, they have access to a variety of foodstuff and doctors can cureillness that killed people in the past.

Topic 22: We all work or will work in our jobs with many different kinds ofpeople. In your opinion, what are some important characteristics of a co-

worker (someone you work closely with)? Use reasons and specific

examples to explain why these characteristics are important.

    Score: 6.0

The majority of our life we spend at work. While working, we communicate with thepeople surrounding us. There are as many characters as are people in the world. Iprefer to work with a communicable, generous and clever colleague.

First of all, the most valuable people for me are the communicable and friendly ones.Every day at work we meet the same people. So, each worker must help to support afriendly atmosphere and a feeling of commandship at the working place. Being oneteam allows workers to solve problems sooner and more effectively. For example, atsurgical operations, all medical persons should work cooperatively as one brigade tosuccessfully complete the procedure. Medical nurses and hospital attendants shouldhelp and create the best conditions for the surgeon, thus benefiting all from theirwork.

Another quality I prefer in a person is to not be jealous. For all of us is the usualfeeling of jealousy to the people surrounding us. But this sense is harmful not only forus, but for all team members as well. For instance, a jealous colleague may berewarded for more than he deserves, sometimes infringing on the valid contributionsof others in the company. These false accomplishments could lead to false rumorsabout his co-worker, and, as a consequence, to the dismissal of his more fortunatecolleague. In the end, all team members suffer from this action because of having tooverburden themselves with additional job tasks from the discharged worker. So, it isimportant to be helpful to each other and to not be jealous of others.

In addition, co-workers should be wise. Colleagues' mind and wisdom are important

in resolving tasks. Otherwise, they will appeal for help to you. For instance, acolleague asks one to help him to write a new project. After waiting some time, hewill eventually receive help. And while he spends his working and free time untilfinishing this work, his own work is postponed. Ultimately, the work of both workerswill be delayed. Therefore, it's necessary to have clever colleagues to support thefurther development of an organisation.

In conclusion, I would say that such characteristics as communicability andsociability, generosity , and mind and wisdom are the important qualities forcolleagues, leading to cooperative, fruitful, and progressive work in an organisation.

Another quality an ideal co-worker should have is receptivity to new ideas. I regardinflexibility as being a drawback which can only alter the working environment. Moreover, instead of achieving progress in our work, we may have to face adeterioration of work quality, which can benefit neither of us. Conversely, someonewho neither sticks rigidously to his/her ideas nor imposes his/her views on otherscontributes significantly to a job well-done as well as to an enthralling workatmosphere.

In conclusion, I think that team spirit and
