Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Three Island Neighbors of Jejudo: Biyangdo, Gapado and MaradoJejudo has several smaller islands located nearby, including Woodo, Gapado,
Marado and Biyangdo. All are inhabited, and they lie neither too far nor too close
to Jejudo. Among them, Biyangdo, Gapado and Marado are particularly lovely
and small enough to be enjoyed on a half-day walking tour. This summer, why not
create some unforgettable memories while exploring these islands on foot?

Biyangdo - Rocky, Rugged and UniqueBiyangdo, located to the west of Hallim Harbor,
is so close to Jejudo that it looks like it might
come floating right up onto the shore. Its only
15 minutes from Hallim Harbor to Biyangdos
Apgae dock. At the dock, I can see some
female divers selling abalones, top shells and
octopuses, and the chattering of kids trying to
catch brown turban shells rings in my ears. At
the entrance to the village, I can see the bent
backs of women drying seaweed in the strong
sunlight.
Biyangdo rose up out of the ocean after a
volcanic eruption 1,000 years ago, during the
Goryeo Dynasty. Legend has it that the island
floated over from China and was stopped in its
present location by the scream of a pregnant woman. Thanks
to cool winds and unobstructed scenery, trekking around the
island is refreshing even in mid-summer.
Turing right at the dock, I pass by Biyang Elementary School
and arrive at Pulrangmot, a pond shaped like the Korean
peninsula, where sea water mixes with fresh water.
Walking along the coast brings me to Stone Park, where
you can see strange stones and oddly shaped rocks. One
called Rock Carrying a Baby on its Back catches my eye.
Legend has it that a female diver came here to work with the
other women, but her husband never came to take her home.

She waited for him until she turned into a rock. Rumor has it
that if people pray in front of this rock, theyll be blessed with
a baby. This has made it a popular tourist destination.
Another rock grabs my attention: It is shaped like an
elephant dipping its trunk into the sea. Known as Elephant
Rock, its top has turned white from the excretion from
cormorants and seagulls. Sometimes you can see yellow wild
flowers growing among these bird droppings. At ebb tide,
tourists can walk to this rock.
Finishing my walk along the coastline of Biyangdo, I begin to
walk up to Biyangbong, a mountain in the middle of Biyangdo.
From an observatory situated in the middle of the trail leading
up Biyangbong, you can see tranquil yet beautiful Biyangdo
Harbor and the villages of Biyangdo, as well as Hallasan and
the white sand beaches of Jejudo across the sea.
After about 20 minutes, I get to the uninhabited lighthouse
at the top of the peak. From the lighthouse, I can see two
craters on the peak, which hold the shape of a thousand years
ago. The craters form a basin, which has been designated as
a natural monument and is home to a colony of Biyang trees.
Turning my eyes to the ocean, I can see the western coast of
Jejudo, from Aewoleup to Chaguido, and the beautiful scenery
of the wind farm in Hyungyungmyeon.
On my way back to the dock, where the ferry comes and
goes only twice a day, I see a sign that says a famous soap
opera was shot on this island. Before the ferry comes, Ill visit
a restaurant which is famous for bomaljook(bomal porridge). I
cant wait to taste the porridge along with another specialty of
Boyangdo, hanchimulhoe(mitra squid sashimi).

Gapado - Where the Kings Horses RoamedGapado, located 5.5 kilometers from Jejudos Mosulpo Harbor,
is just a 15-minute ferry ride away. The first thing youll notice
when visiting this island is the lovely walking paths cutting
through green fields of barley and sweet potatoes. During the
Chosun Dynasty, Gapado was used as a farm where cattle and
horses were raised. It first became known to the Western world
through the writings of a Dutch bookkeeper named Hendrick
Hamel. He was shipwrecked on Jejudo in 1653 and later wrote
books about his experience.
Leaving the ship at Sangdong dock on Gapado northern shore,
you will be amazed by the exotic scenery of blue and orange
rooftops on the eastern part of the island. You dont have to walk

stones. When I get to a narrow path that is lined with low
houses, I can see Gapa Elementary School, which looks lovely
nestled in the shade of tall palm trees.
Walking along the road, I peek into a house over a tall stone
wall and see a fisherman hard at work fixing his fishing net. As
I come back to Sangdong dock, the ferry arrives, splitting the
waves. Even though it was not a very long journey, trekking
through Gapado was an enjoyable and relaxing way to
experience the island.

briskly in Gapado; youll most likely be disappointed if you hurry
about looking for tourist attractions. The best way to enjoy this
island is to walk slowly, savoring the peace and calm.
Some travelers prefer getting around the island on a bike, but
most people choose to take a stroll along the walking track that
circles the island and offers a scenic view of the coast. Walking
around the entire island takes only an hour and a half. You can
also take a figure-eight walking route which will take you through
the village, allowing you to peek into the lives of the people of
Gapado.
I choose to take the coastal route. Walking
in a clockwise direction from Sangdong dock,
the first point I reach is Gaeumjuri-Kozi. Kozi
means cape in the Jeju dialect. There, I hear
the endless whispers of the deep blue sea and
black basalt rocks.
After taking a short rest at a small pavilion
along the way, I begin to walk again. Soon, I
see a small altar built with rock walls. This altar
is the place where rituals are held to assure
peace on the island and a large catch for the
local fishermen. Because the wind of Gapado is
extremely strong (people often say its strong
enough to bend the horns of a black cow),
every February of the Lunar calendar, nine
male residents of Gapado devote themselves
to holding the rituals for four days and three
nights.
After a while, I reach Hadong dock, which
is very close to Gapado Lighthouse. I can see Marado beyond
the lighthouse. A sign that says Gomangwool catches my
eye. This area is also called Donghanggaemool, a place where
underground water bubbles up between the stones. Because of
this spring water, Gapado is blessed as the only one of Jejudos
surrounding islands which does not have water shortage issues.
Even though Gapado doesnt have any nice sand beaches, you
can have fun soaking your feet in this cool water.
I then decide to leave the coastal trail behind and give the
walking route through the village a try. Surrounded by a rural
view, I encounter fields of dolmens, special tombs made from

Marado - A Tiny Ocean JewelMarado is Koreas southernmost island, designated National
Treasure number 423. The overall length of the islands coastline
is just 4.2 kilometers; from the sky it looks like an aircraft carrier
or a sweet potato floating in the sea. Since it is much father from
Jejudo than Gapado, people did not begin living here until much
later.
Arriving at Jarideok dock, I take the stairs to the flatland of

Marado to take a look at the view of Hallasan on Jejudo. They
say that Marado soared up from the sea by itself, and thanks to
the basalt rocks in its sea bed, it is abundant in seafood such as
abalones, sea chestnuts and top shells. In summer, the island is
crowded with fishermen from around the country who come to try
to catch rudder fish and damselfish.
The first point of interest on the walking course of Marado is
the branch school of Gapa Elementary School. There are a lot
of tourists on the playground, but the school itself is silent and
serene. The cactuses of the island are also very exotic, with large
leaves and sharp thorns. Walking along the road, I can see a
beautiful chocolate castle in a green meadow. This is the public
relations office of the Chocolate Museum in Daejungeup, Jejudo.
The staff makes chocolate-banana ice cream himself and gives it
to visitors. Tourists who have walked a long distance in the strong
sunshine eagerly accept the cool, refreshing treat.
After taking some photos in front of the rock indicating the
southernmost point of Korea, I move on to the Marado Catholic
Church. This church is a must-visit place for tourists because of
its architecture - some say it looks like an abalone, a specialty of
Marado; others say it resembles the inside of the stomach of the
whale that swallowed Jonah in the Bible.
I walk up a hill to see the Marado Lighthouse, which is located on
the highest point of the island. It was first built in 1915 and became
an inhabited lighthouse in 1955. The current lighthouse was rebuilt
in 1987. In front of the lighthouse, you can see miniature replicas
of lighthouses from around the world, each with its own story. The
Lighthouse Park is also a great place to visit.
There are few trees and little shade on Marado; all you can see
is blackish-blue sea and green meadows. According to legend, a
villager burned down all the trees on the island while trying to use
fire to kill a snake. There are no wells or ponds on the island either,
so people living on Marado must collect rainwater.
Completing the walking course, I feel a little hungry, and
the smell of jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) and
jjamppong (spicy Chinese noodle soup with vegetables and
seafood) stimulates my appetite. Many tourists enjoy eating
jajangmyeon and jjamppong on Marado. It is recommended to drop
by sushi restaurants run by female divers and taste fresh abalones,
top shells and damselfish.
