The best novels I read in 2017:

- #10 - Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin (translated by Megan McDowell)

- #9 - Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was by Sjón (translated by Victor ia Cr ibb)

- #8 - The Vegetarian by Han Kang (translated by Deborah Smith)

- #7 - Imagine Me Gone by Adam Haslett

- #6 - The Birds of Opulence by Crystal Wilkinson

- #5 - Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson

#4 - All We Shall Know by Donal Ryan

I?d have killed myself by now if I was brave enough. I don?t think it would hurt the baby. His little heart would stop with mine. He wouldn?t feel himself leaving one world of darkness for another, his spirit untangling itself from me.

This beautiful novel is told from the perspective of a pregnant woman named Melody, who resides in a small I r ish community. At the age of thir ty-three, Melody has just informed her husband that her unborn child is not his. A seventeen-year-old Traveller named Martin, whom she taught how to read for more than a year, is the father.

Pat, her unfaithful husband of thir teen years, leaves her and she becomes an outcast in the close-knit community. Melody tr ies to find Martin, but he has gone to England. As Melody's alienation from the community deepens, she meets nineteen-year-old Mary, an outcast in the Traveller community because she is unable to have children.

The story unfolds from there, complete with appalling characters. There is some light in this dark story as Melody develops a beautiful and sustaining fr iendship with Mary.

Donal Ryan has such magic at his disposal to tell a story. In his uniquely lyr ical and vibrant style, he deftly navigates past events and present emotions, drawing readers in as he explores the themes of sin, revenge, penitence, and a yearning for grace.

TRUTH IS NOT WHATEVER AN INDIVIDUAL CAN GET PEOPLE TO BELIEVE

- I f you are going to claim you never said Russia meddled in the election , then you probably shouldn't have said it nineteen times.

- I f little lies are considered white, then what are big lies considered?

- I f you are going to brag that you are a hero in the making, it would help if you had not worked so hard to avoid serving your country dur ing war time.

- I f you are talking about how stupid it is to arm teachers, then you are not talking about banning assault r ifles.

I like novels that revisit the Victorian era. These novels at tempt to recreate the m indset and convent ions of that period. Below I have chosen three of my favorite neo-Victorian novels.

Set during New Zealand's gold rush, i t begins with a prospector who stumbles into a clandest ine conference.

An archivist is haunted by Yorkshire landmarks she researched for her degree, including a lunat ic asylum.

It is a story of a soldier t rying to return home after f ight ing in the American Civi l War.
