Design Systems Builders, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of T.W. Frierson, was recognized as one of the Top 10 Metal Builders of 2016 by Metal Construction News. According to the report, Design Systems Builders, Inc. ranked 7th on the list constructing over 1,500,000 square feet in 2016.

This is a quote that is attributed to John Ruskin, a prominent social thinker, author and philanthropist in

the 19th century. I share this quote because it speaks to who we are as company and how we wish to be viewed by others. We have never pitched TWF as the cheapest contractor, and certainly don’t aspire to be viewed as the cheapest contractor. We have always positioned ourselves to be regarded as a team player that brings true value to every project. We bring value through our unique differentiators like design-build services, design-assist, pre-engineered building solutions, and our ability self perform work with our own employees. All of these

add to the value equation and allow us the opportunity to provide excellent services at a truly competitive price.

This quote also reflects how we hire our people and contract with our suppliers and subcontractors. We are devoted to promoting the virtues of our people, our partners and our work and strive to assemble the most beneficial team for the project. We hire the best for the particular need - while keeping in mind that true value is not necessarily the first cost, but the long term value our employees and team members bring to our company and our clients.

By inspiring a culture of ownership and continuous improvement, we will successfully advance our transition into an ESOP. We are committed to solving problems by initiating collaboration among all team members and embracing creative breakthroughs that make a difference. Our biggest asset will be our ability to embrace and maintain a value oriented culture. This embodies our willingness to listen, innovate, change, and act to provide the best long term solutions to our clients.

Please keep this in mind as we continue to press on our Lean implementation, utilization of Procore, and most importantly the development of each person of our organization.

PROCORE TRAININGT.W. Frierson recently invested in a new cloud-based software for our Project Management team, Procore. By streamlining and mobilizing project communications and documentation, our efficiency and accountability will increase. Access to real time data, drawing revisions, and other critical project changes will be immediate and available 24/7 to the entire project team, including Owners and Subcontractors. All of our Superintendents, Project Managers & Assistant Project Managers have gone through extensive training on this new software.

“There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey. It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

- John Ruskin -

The tile industry is currently experiencing a huge move toward domestic production. Foreign companies, which once cornered the world tile market, have poured millions of dollars into U.S. manufacturing, attracted to the proximity of raw materials and more immediate access to American end-users.

If Tennessee ever decided to pick a tile capital, there’s a good chance it would be here, according to the Tennessean. Access to raw materials and to key interstates combined with a business friendly environment and a trained work force have made Tennessee a hotbed of activity for tile production.

Having built three major tile manufacturing facilities in Middle Tennessee to date, T.W. Frierson is excited to announce we will be partnering with Dal-Tile to expand their manufacturing campus located in Dickson, TN.

Commissioner Bob Rolfe, of the TN Department of Economic and Community Development, Mayor Bernie Ash, of the City of Lebanon, and Michael Kephart, President, of Wonder Porcelain LLC, were among those on hand to ceremonially open the new American Wonder Porcelain plant on Tuesday, April 11th in Lebanon, TN. The future on site showroom in the state-of-the-art manufacturing complex hosted the group of approximately 100 guests consisting of local officials, plant employees and foreign investors.

On August 21st at approximately 1:30PM, the Nashville area will be experiencing a total solar eclipse. This is an exciting event, but at the same time we must be aware of the dangers a solar eclipse can cause.

You have been told your entire life not to stare at the sun. This is because the sun simply outputs more power than our eyes are designed to handle - exposing the eyes to that kind of power can cause damage the retina. A solar eclipse is dangerous because the sun can come out from behind the moon and “surprise you” before you have a chance to look away. This is actually worse than when you normally look away from the sun because during the total eclipse it is dark out, causing your pupil to dilate allowing it to let in enough light to see.

Over the next few weeks we will be providing Superintendents with eclipse glasses for protection if individuals wish to look at the eclipse.
