The Delegation for Friendship Among Women is a norr politicalorganizat ion that nurtures fr iendship between wonlen l ronl theUnited States and other countr ies, and seeks nuancedunderstanding of women's work and t ives throughot l t the world

The Detegat ion accomptishes i ts mission pr imari ly by sct f fundedstudy tr ips to countr ies where formal retat ions with the U.S. areoften in t ransi t ion. Detegates meet with a var iety of notablewomen with whom we exchange ideas and sotut ions' as wel l ast inks to relevant resources.

Upon returning to the U.5., Detegat ion members cont inue thepurposefut diatogue with the women abroad, and shareknowtedge and insights with other U.S. c i t izens through speechesand art ic les.

The Detegation for Friendship Among Women thrives today becauseof the desire of one woman, then others, to understand and communi-cate about the conditions of, and solutions by, women throughout thewortd. For nearly 50 years, women from across the United States haveadvanced the briginal idea by actively exploring the tives and workof women on six continents - sharing ideas, and offering each otherinsights and informat ion.

The Delegation's purpose is the promotion of friendship and under-standing among women teaders, broadly defined. We are a non-politi-ca[, non-governmentat organization, and are committed to culturalappreciation, friendship, and peacefuI coexistence. Those involved inthe Detegation experience are enriched by exploring our difierencesand similarities as cultures and individuals.

Since it's inception, De[egation participants have visited and tatkedwith women teaders at universities, government, schools, orphanages,hospitats, factories, home projects, farms, new housing deve[opments,businesses, banks, impoverished neighborhoods, homes for the agedand the hometess, district courts, nationat museums, arts institutions'and historicat sites. Throughout the visits, the Detegation receives andshares information on projects and women from other countries thatcould be heloful to those involved in the work.

The Detegation is distinguished by the diversity of its members, whorepresent every region of the U.S., and whose backgrounds inctudeacademia, business, healthcare, arts, [aw, and volunteerism. lt is anautonomous, selFfunded ground that receives briefing and informatlonfrom the U.S. Department of State. Delegates have met with women inAtbania, American Samoa, Argentina, Bangladesh, thutan' Brazit' But-garia, Cambodia, Chile, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Lebanon' Libya'Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, New Zealand, North Korea' oman'The People's Repubt ic of China, Peru, Potand, Romania, Singapore,South Korea, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Ihaitand, Tonga'Russia, Veneruela, Vietnam, Yemen, and Yugoslavia.4

Detegates have a[so participated in international women's confer-ences. The information and experiences of the Delegates are commu-nicated to civic organizations, study groups, media, and other non-prof-it organizations.

Among the many women in leadership that the Detegation has beenpriveleged to meet are: Valentina Tershkove, the first Russian womanin space; First Lady Jehan Sadat of Egypt; First Lady Suzanne Mubarekof Egypt; First Lady Laura Bush of the U.S.; First Lady Patricia Nixon ofthe U.S.; Prime Minister Cotda Meir of lsraet; Princess Ashraf of tran:First Lady Hafiz a[ Assad of Syria; Empress Farah Diba of lrauHer Highness Shaykha of the United Arab Emirates; Mother Teresa ofIndia; Prime Mlnister Indira Candhi of India; Princess Wangchuck ofBhutan: and Princess Badial At Saud of Kuwait.

In addition to the dozens of meetings hetd and friendty communica-tions established, the Delegation occasionatly has been abte to provideforms of speciat support; books for vittage schools in Egypt; sewingmachines to village women in India; sponsoring two girls from Albaniato finish their educations in the U.S.; sponsoring a physician from thePeopte's Repubtic of China to pursue a cardiac surgery speciatizationin the U.S.; hetping with a project to record music of the hitt people ofVietnam; directing an exchange of women from Egypt and from SouthAfrica to come to the U.S. to examine projects of interest; starting abank for women in Samoa; hosing visits of women from Bhutan, Egyptand South Africa; exchanging books and information in specific subjectareas in many countries.

The initiat idea for the Delgation has evolved and grows within themembers today. A tribute of thanks goes to the founders and earlyparticipants who buitt an idea into a successful program for othersto foltow: Margaret McNamara, whose 1963 trip to Japan with hernational cabinet member husband produced the idea; Bernice Behrens,whose professional work in hosting internationat groups for theState of Catifornia furthered the idea by creating the first trips toRussia and Eastern Europe; and by the 1965 estabtishment of thenon-profit organization, through the efforts of nationaI and stateteaders Elty Peterson, Rhoda Lund, Lenora March, Mary Pomeroy, andothers. The Delegation has benefited from the generous work of manydistringuished chairs and thoughtfut members, att with breadth anddepth of interests that have marked the work of the organizationin communicat ing with and l inking women in f r iendship around theworld.
