Vannebar Bush & Memex (1930s..)
– Koska edes transistoria ei ollut keksitty tuohon aikaan hänen ideoitaan ei noteerannut juuri kukaan eikä niistä keskusteltu saati hänen teoksiaan luettu.
• II maailmansota kiihdytti teknologian kehitystä (tykistö, salauksenpurku)

Vannebar Bush: As We May Think
• In 1945 Vannevar Bush published his seminal paper, “As We May Think” , reflecting on how technologies could help solve the problems of post war society. He is now considered to be the inventor of hypertext, and ever since his original work others have been refining his approach, both in terms of what hypertext should offer, how it is interpreted by readers, and also in concrete systems and studies.Millard & Ross, 2006: Web 2.0: Hypertext by Any Other Name?
• “Consider a future device for individual use, which is a sort of mechanized private file and library. It needs a name, and, to coin one at random, "memex" will do. A memex is a device in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.”http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/194507/bush
• Nuori Douglas Engelbart innostui Bushin ideoista

Douglas Engelbart - Graafisen käyttöliittymän ”isä” (1950-)
However, one day while driving to work he had an epiphany: he realized that his real calling as an engineer was not to work on small projects that
might only benefit a few people. Instead, he wanted to work on something that would benefit all of humanity. He recalled Bush's essay and started thinking about ways in which a machine could be built that would augment human intellect. During the war he had worked as a radar operator, so he was able to envision a display system built around
cathode ray tubes where the user could build models of information graphically and jump around dynamically to whatever interested them
• Tekniikan Tohtori 1955 SRI Insititute, California• Suuri tutkimusrahoitus 1959 (U.S Air Forces)• 1962 uraa-uurtava artikkeli ”Augmenting Human Intellect”
●Tietokoneet ovat nopein tapa lisätä ihmisten kykyä ja ymmärrystä ratkaista monimutkaisia ongelmia●Ei ihmisen älyn korvaaja vaan hyödyllinen väline (=tool)
•1968 ”Mother of all demos” => ensimmäinen GUI tietokone

1968: Kaikkien demojen äiti NLS/oN-Line System (SRI institute)
• Vaikka koneet olivat toimivia, olivat ne aikalaisille pelkkää futurologiaa eikä suuri osa yleisöstä ei edes tajunnut näkemäänsä (monet ominaisuudet ovat tulleet osaksi arkea vasta 2000-luvun taitteessa) => demoa haittasi myös näyttöteknologian surkea taso– hyperlinkit, tekstin editointi koko näytöllä, tehtäväkohtaiset ohjetiedostot,
jaettu verkkotila, sähköposti, pikaviestit ja videokonferenssit !! (+Arpanet, internetin edeltäjä)
• SRI => Ei rahaa kaupallistaa tätä mullistavaa ideaa => Kopiokonefirma Xerox sen sijaan oli ERITTÄIN kiinnostunut.

He todellakin olivat aikaansa edellä, sillä..”pääte” edusti edistystä aikana jolloin esim. Oulun
yliopistossa käytettiin reikäkortteja

XEROX PARC (1970-)
• Engelbartin demo sävähdytti lukuisia ihmisiä ja yrityksiä. Xerox oli tienannut omaisuuksia kopiokoneilla eikä halunnut jäädä tuleen makaamaan ”sähköisen paperin” mullistaessa maailman.
• Xerox Palo Alto Research Center perustettiin tutkimaan tätä uutta ilmiötä– tutkijoille annettiin käytännössä vapaat kädet! (keräsikin
paikalle USAn parhaat voimat)• Ensimmäisten innovaatioiden joukossa kehitettiin lasertulostin,

– Lapset osaavat tehdä ohjelmia, jotka tekevät ”serious things” => tools for others
– Lapset innostuvat kun pääsevät tekemään todellisia asioita tietokoneella, eikä pelkkiä ennakolta valmistettuja tehtäviä
• Seymort Papert & LOGO vs. Kay & Smalltalk– NSF ei uskaltanut rahoittaa kahta ”samanlaista” ja ”erilaista”
projektia

Teoreettinen viitekehys takana• Vuonna 1972 suurin osa tietokoneavusteisen opetuksen kentästä uskoi
”ohjelmoituun oppimiseen” jolla oli behavioristiset juuret. ”Teaching machines”• Kehitysteoriat, kehitysvyöhykkeet (Piaget jne.) .. • Jerome, Bruner, Moore, O. K. & Seymort Papert vaikuttivat merkittävästi
Dynabook vision syntyyn.

Dynabook visio 1972
• Paino: < 1kg• Näyttö: ainakin 4000 merkkiä kirjaa vastaavalla kontrastilla,
dynaaminen grafiikka kohtuullisella kuvanlaadulla• Tallennusmedia: irroitettava paikallismuisti (500 kirjan

Paloja skenaarioista (1972)
• jaettu tila: ”the nine year olds were lyin on the grass.. their dynabooks hooked together to allow each of them a viewscreen into the space world..”
• tietokannat, romput, www: ”Jimmy connected his dynabook to his class’ liblink.. thought and knowledge of ages past, all perusable through screen of his dynabook”

Joten tekniikka oli pakko kehittää itse
• Siinä sivussa kehitettiin/vaikutettiin merkittävästi mm. seuraavien meille tuttujen, arkipäiväisten asioiden kehitystyöhön:– ethernet, hiiri, lasertulostin, wysiwyg, ikkunapohjainen
käyttöliittymä, oliopohjaiset ohjelmointikielet• Anekdootti:..other input devices include a typewriter keyboard, a
”chord” keyboard, a pointing device called ”mouse” which inputs position as it is moved on the table..”

Työpöytä ja wysiwyg / virtual paper saivat maailman jakamattoman huomion => nykyaikaisen tietojenkäsittelyn perusta
Sen sijaan käyttäjien toisilleen helposti ohjelmoimat työkalut ja joustava tietojentallennus (”flexible knowledge base”) jäivät varjoon. => web, esim. legodacta..

Tämän vuosisadan lopussa useimmat koulutukselliset palvelut toteutetaan elektronisesti:

In the early 2000s, wikis were increasingly adopted in enterprise as collaborative software. Common uses included project communication, intranets, and documentation, initially for technical users.

Web2.0 kritiikkiä: Tim Berners-Lee
• "Totally not. Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along. And in fact, you know, this 'Web 2.0,' it means using the standards which have been produced by all these people working on Web 1.0."Tim Berners-Lee on Web 2.0: "nobody even knows what it means" (http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060901-7650.html)
• Even boosters acknowledge that the biggest problems for Web 2.0 are excessive hype and the lack of a real definition. But perhaps the biggest criticism of the Web 2.0 phenomenon is that it has failed to generate enough truly important products. (2006; Arstechnica)

Web2.0: Varhaisia määritelmiä
• What is of particular importance in the web 2.0 context for CSCL researchers is the integration of so-called social software (Kolbitsch & Maurer, 2006*).
• Social software refers to systems which facilitate human communication, interaction, and collaboration. These systems support the constitution and maintenance of self-organizing social networks and communities.
• Weblogs (blogs), file-sharing communities, and especially wikis loom large in this social-software context. Cress & Kimmerle (2007); *http://www.jucs.org/jucs_12_2/

Mobile Internet Devices
• A Mobile Internet Device (MID) is an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) initiative raised by Intel for consumers and prosumers. Most other UMPCs are designed for mobile professionals. (wikipedia)“
• Nokia alone will ship 400 million handsets this year, and most of those devices can surf the web. Geography, power consumption, and lack of wired infrastructure mean that much of the planet will see its first web page on a portable handset. Fad(s) vs. Research• “Overall, the general claim has been that when new
technologies and software have been used in an educational setting, new learning opportunities have arisen.
• Thus far there have been plenty of case studies and design experiments where mobile technologies have been used for innovative pedagogical ideas and design studies. However, only a few studies give detailed arguments as to what are these new opportunities in terms of learning interaction and collaboration and what are the exact processes that mobile tools can scaffold.
• We claim that it is not only the learner being “mobile” that matters.“(Järvelä, Näykki, Laru & Luokkanen, 2007)

..Research
• A stronger argument for applying mobile technologies and social web tools for education is that of increasing students’ opportunities for interactions and sharing ideas and thus, increasing opportunities for an active mind in multiple contexts (Dillenbourg, Järvelä, & Fischer, 2007).
• The pedagogical ideas of our research are grounded on collaborative learning, including the socially shared origin of cognition as well as self-regulated learning theory.
• This is to say that special effort has been put on enhancing and scaffolding collaborative learning as cognitive, social, and motivated activity. (Järvelä, Näykki, Laru & Luokkanen, 2007)
