Hamburg v. Naumburg Discover Germany profi les this year’s German candidates for the UNESCO list of world heritage sites: Hamburg is in the running with its historic warehouse district and Kontorhaus quarter. Other nomina-tions are Naumburg Cathedral and the landscape around the Saale and Unstrut Rivers. Like no other place on earth, this region captures the spirit of the High Mid-dle Ages between the 11th and 13th centu-ries, with a superb concentration of castles, palaces and churches from the period.

Anna – The Great Anna Netrebko – the world’s most famous opera diva – is an artist of exceptional talent, an outstanding practitioner of her métier. She is high up on the Forbes list of most infl u-ential people, and acclaimed by critics as one of the best performers on stage today. Netrebko has rendered a great service to the world of opera. Thanks to the singer, a genre oft en dismissed as old-fashioned and elitist is emerging with a fresh new appeal. Just as the Three Tenors did in the 1990s, the Russian-born soprano has helped to popularize the art form. The fi lm Anna – The Great documents the artist’s career.

The Mecca Clock Tower A Stuttgart fi rm of architects has built the largest clock in the world in Mecca – a project of superlatives. The tower in the center of the holy pilgrimage site breaks more than 30 world records. The huge clock faces, for example, measure 43 meters in diameter, the minute hands are 23 meters long and each of the four motors weighs 21 tons. This makes the clock almost 35 times bigger than Big Ben. During night hours, two million LEDs illuminate the clock faces, which are legible from a distance of up to eight kilometers. The documentary The Mecca Clock Tower tells the astonishing story of this engineer-ing masterpiece from the initial concept through to its realization. The fi lm also provides rare insights into Islam’s most sacred place.
