TV Highlights Your English TV Program – November 2019 All times given in UTC/GMT I Local Times: Lagos UTC +1 | Cape Town UTC +2 | Nairobi UTC +3 | Delhi UTC +5,5 | Bangkok UTC +7 | Hong Kong UTC +8 | London UTC +0 | Berlin UTC +1 | Moscow UTC +3 |San Francisco UTC –8 | Edmonton UTC –7 | New York UTC –5 30 TH ANNIVERSARY The Fall of the Wall November 9 th , 1989 is a historic date – not just for the Germans. The Berlin Wall was unexpectedly toppled by the peaceful actions of courageous people. A grassroots revolution that breached one of the world’s most impenetrable borders almost coincidentally. The division of Germany was overcome, and the Iron Curtain was raised. A special day of programs to mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Wall includes the following: The two-part documentary The Night the Wall Came Down reconstructs one of the strangest days in German history. A day when the border that divided Germany was brought down almost by accident. On the morning of 9 November 1989, the young East German interior ministry functionary Gerhard Lauter drafts new travel regulations aimed at saving East Germany from its creeping demise. Acting alone, and against instructions from the politburo, Lauter decrees the lifting of all travel restrictions – albeit in an orderly and bureaucratic manner in the long-term. But that afternoon, his document falls into the hands of politburo member Günter Schabowski who, put on the back foot by reporters, reads it out on live TV ahead of its planned release. Euromaxx also devotes its entire program on 9 November to the anniversary. This special edition focuses on the people who actually experienced the fall of the Wall and their stories. What are their recollections of that day? How have their lives changed since then? And where can we still find traces of that era today? Arts.21 shines the spotlight on rock legend Udo Lindenberg: In an exhibition at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts, the musician shows paintings created during these transitional years. Photos and videos also document his activism against the division of Germany over the years, his surveillance by Stasi spies and his irreverent dealings with East German leader Erich Honecker. In the program, Udo Lindenberg talks about divided Germany, the fall of the Wall and the current situation – 30 years on. Foto: imago images Photo: Tessa Livesey From 6 November DW broadcasts the documentary The Wall, Our Family and Us: Siblings Antonia Hildebrandt and Franz Hildebrandt-Harangozó were born after the fall of the Wall and grew up in reunified Germany. They studied in Berlin and lived not far from Bernauer Straße, where the Wall once sliced through the city. Although the physical barrier was toppled 30 years ago, the two young Berliners sense that the wounds inflicted by the decades-long division of Germany have still not healed. They set out to discover why and begin by searching for clues within their own family. Siblings Antonia and Franz

From 10 to 17 November, DW will place a special focus on the subject of education, including in the following magazines:

C H E C K - I N

An Educational Trip to Munich Take a quick selfie on Marienplatz and head straight to a café – for some, the perfect blend of culture and relaxation while on vacation. But many visitors to Munich want much more: to delve into the history of the city, follow in the footsteps of “Mad King” Ludwig II and discover the riches of Munich’s art collections. The Bavarian capital is a popular destination for people on educational travel programs. But what makes a trip an educational one and what is the target group? Travel educates – and bearing this in mind, Check-in heads to Munich.

Future Education School prepares you for life – is that still the case? The way people learn, as well as what they are required to learn, is changing. Digital media, tablets and Apps promise simpler, faster and above all entertaining ways to learn. But those professionally driving digitali-zation are opting for more traditional learning methods for their own children: In Silicon Valley, creative, back-to-nature school programs are a popular choice. And on the labor market of the future, other skills are in demand: such as emotional intelligence, intercul-tural competence, critical thinking. Global 3000 investigates: How does education foster societal divisions? And what are the prospects for the UN’s sustainable development goal to attain equitable and high quality education for all by 2030?

Social Mobility It remains the case in Germany that your background has a major effect on your educational and career opportunities. An OECD study shows that by international standards, a significantly higher number of migrants work in Germany’s low-wage sector. Children born into poorly-educat-ed families continue to struggle. Once you’ve climbed the ladder, do you stay there forever? Can advancement occur with the help of grants or are structures so rigid that the top jobs are seen as a birthright for the privileged few? Made in Germany reports on the world of the elites and social advancement from the lowest strata.

Snapshots of Mexico This documentary presents Mexico as a nation in flux – as seen through the lenses of contemporary photographers. It is a diverse and complex country characterized by many geographical and cultural opposites: between North and South, city and country, desert and dense jungle, Latin America and the US. At the same time, Mexico is a symbol of resistance and a vast source of creative potential. One example of this is the Mexican photographers who use their cameras to capture the challenges of daily life in their country.
