Background

• Community Solutions Working Group began June 2009 under HTC in parallel with main HTC development of small single-user system development

• Focused on community-scale easily expandable solutions using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS)components, quick deployment into severely energy-impoverished areas

• Key to success needed strong partnership with Non-Government Organization (NGO) capable of rapid deployment and long range growth

The Business Plan

• Business plan needed to demonstrate sustainable growth potential that could attract venture capital or sizable loans for community entrepreneurial businesses

• First technical model developed in June-November 2009, a 1 kW Solar or Solar + Wind generator to charge customer batteries delivered to homes for lighting and small appliances, recharged as needed

• First business model showed that loans for initial few units (e.g. 10) and bootstrapping based on low income stream from $1-2/day wages of customers not viable

Business Plan – Sirona • NGO partner joined with CSI in October 2009, Sirona-

Cares Foundation (SCF), already established in job-creation biofuel farming programs in Haiti, developed viable plan in December 2009:– Develop in-country manufacturing, total service and

growth organization– Train community entrepreneurs who franchise generator,

home equipment from parent company/manufacturer– Base affordable homeowner fee, total income on current

costs of kerosene, candles– Size basic generator to serve at least 40 families, 240

people – Obtain venture/loan funding to expand manufacturing to

serve 1 million people in first 5 years

SunBlazer Product Design

• SunBlazer is mobile 1.5kW PV Solar trailer with house batteries and 20 sub-chargers for up to 40 home packs serving home lighting kits

• Developed by CSI members including IEEE, non-IEEE members; corporate CEOs, heads of NGOs, academics, students

• All efforts volunteer, pro-bono or corporate donations of employee paid-for time; prototyping, assembly space; time for deployment & training; weekly project meetings

IEEE-Sirona Pilot Program

• Sirona proposed 2-stage pilot program to prove market viability: 6 SunBlazers in 2011; 9 more in 2012

• IEEE various entities provided seed funding of $400K 2010 -2011; $50K to date in 2012 plus PES budget pending

• Pilot 1 deployed on schedule in 6 different communities in June-July 2011; highly successful 6 month performance; fully subscribed, waiting lists in all communities

• Pilot 2 shipped to Sirona-Haiti startup factory in June for final assembly in Haiti

10

Sirona Field Developments

• First 6 months performance showed that recharge rate of homeowners is far less than 1 per day maximum planned for.

• Next 9 units therefore being equipped with twice the number of battery packs and home lighting kits, 80 per trailer, serving 480 persons per unit, 4320 people per 9 trailers

11

Keys to Success

• IEEE CSI-Sirona partnership advanced SunBlazer prototypes from concept to deployment in 7 months

• Credits to:– Strong support from IEEE agencies for funding: HTC, NPSS,

PES, Region 9, IEEE Canada, IEEE Foundation– Focused dedicated partner Sirona creating new

entrepreneurial organization in Haiti in 6 months– Contributions of CSI corporate partners Nextek and Russell,

designing with COTS components for short time to market

• Set up for manufacturing making excellent progress with Haiti government connections playing key role to USAID funding

• IEEE-CSI encouraged to expand globally• Sirona can support new business partnership

development, build seed units for IEEE new ventures1/28/2012
