-By Mike Woodard [email protected] Tuscaloosa proved itself with the USA Olympic Triathlon trials held here in 2008, so on August 22nd Triathlon returns to Tuscaloosa. This time for the Age Group & Elite Na- tional Championships. “Tuscaloosa has proven that they know how to host great events,” USAT National Events Director Jeff Dyrek said. “They offer a level of professionalism and support that ensures the events are successful. We have received great support from the Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Mayor’s Office for the past two years, and we are excited to bring these events to the city and enjoy more of their southern hospi- tality.” More than 1,000 competi- tors will descend on Tuscaloosa... you’ll see bikers riding all about town the weekend of August 22. First the 1.5 K Warrior River Swim, followed by the 40k bike ride and 10 k run. This grueling display of sports A competition will play out along Jack Warner Parkway between downtown and McFarland Blvd and around the University Campus. The event is expected to bring millions of visitor dollars to Tuscaloosa. And itA’s expected to bring out thousands of admiring fans who learned to love this event last year when the Olympic trials were held here. The 2010 Elite National Triathlons are scheduled to be held in Tuscaloosa a year from now too. Tuscaloosa welcomes all Triathlon competitors and visitors. EDITOR’S COMMENTS...

Welcome to all the University of Alabama, Stillman College, and Shelton State Community college students who have arrived in town. We’re glad you’re here! Tuscaloosa will be a great place for you as you plow your path in preparation for your upcoming career after college. Sorry to say, there are a lot of distractions here…so focus enough of your time on studies each day and you’ll get around to enjoying all there is to enjoy. As regular citizens we forget sometimes that many of you are brand new to our city. Sometimes we forget what a wonderful place this it to live and we forget to welcome newcomers and tell them all about what our city and area has to offer. Years ago I graduated from the University of Alabama. (just barely) and I feel trap to the charms of nightlife in Tuscaloosa, and the beautiful nature which surrounds it. I hope you will experience west Alabama, and keep your grades up at the same time. At the end of my college career I had learned how to balance between studies and leisure. I hope you will learn quickly. Back when I was in school here we would hike hills of the Warrior River north east of town, canoe Yellow Creek, sail Lake Tuscaloosa, swim in Lake Lurleen, and climb to the tops of the Indian mounds in Moundville. Wewouldhuntfordeeranddoveintheforestandfieldsfromthefarmernear Aliceville, to the woods of McShan. We would drive the winding roads to Lake Nichol and Harris, hike down to the rapids and sit to have a beer. I learned to love the wildlife which surrounds Tuscaloosa...and at night I became part of it on the strip and downtown. The lure of Alabama football was so great that we could start a party for the Saturday game Friday afternoon...and it wouldn’t end until Sunday! There are so many friends to make, so much fun to have, so many places to see. Tuscaloosa offers far more than most people, even one who live here, realize. This town has got it all. I just want you to remember why you’re here. I had to settle myself down, get real, start thinking about it….I was here to get my college degree and nothing or no one was going to stop me from doing that. I had roommates who are now successful engineers and doctors. I had roommates who didn’t make it to their second year. Now I ask you. Which one are you going to be? For all the fun that college life can offer, it offers one greater advantage than all that. It can offer you the ability to learn anything put before you. I life the odds are you’ll have several careers. I’ve had about 10. Each time you start a new job, or business, or profession...it requires you to jump on that big learning curve. Your college offers you the ability to learn what you need to know for various careers, but it also offers you the ability to learn how to learn anything. You can be whatever you decide to make out of yourself...but it’s going to take a lot of work. Welcome to T-town. Good luck to you all. We’re glad you’re here. Mike Woodard, PublisherTuscaloosa Sun

Children’s Corner

Getting kids to eat a healthy breakfast can be a next to impossible task. Depending on their ages and morning moods, we might be lucky to get a glass of instant breakfast drink into our kids before they’re out the door. No matter what their ages, it can a real chore to lure kids to the breakfast table!

Kids going to school need breakfast but often balk at the thought of eating in their morning rush out the door. Kids really want to do their best! Let your kids know why breakfast is important, and how it WILL make a difference in how they do in school. Ask them to take part in the grocery shopping or help with the shopping list.

Like adults, kids have different tastes, and they know what they like. Some kids like cold cereal, some like hot, while others turn up their nose at any cereal and choose a donut or muffin. Pre-made breakfast bars are another alternative, but be sure to check the labels for nutritional value and consider making your own.

Breakfast Preparation Tips:

A breakfast casserole takes a little time to prepare but it can be done the evening before then refrigerated. Pop it in the oven in the morning for 45 minutes while everyone is getting ready and you have a quick and nutritious breakfast!

Set the breakfast table the night before, even if it’s only for juice and cereal.

French toast is another quick and easy breakfast, and a sure kid-pleaser. Add a little cinnamon to the egg batter for variety. Cut into shapes for younger children.

Keep pancake or waffle batter in the refrigerator, ready to pour on the griddle.

If you like to bake, you might keep a supply of muffins in the freezer, ready to warm in the microwave.

Try making your own nutritious granola and granola bars.

Quesadillas or breakfast burritos just might appeal to the “grab-it-and-run” types.

Pizza for breakfast? English muffin pizzas sprinkled with cheese and microwaved are a hit with most kids.

Almost anything can be sandwiched in a biscuit; scrambled eggs, sausage patty, a small chicken patty, or a slice of ham with cheese melted on top are just a few ideas

(NU) - Homeowners strugglingto meet their mortgage paymentsshould not wait until they defaulton a payment before speaking totheir lender. Hope and help areavailable.

Hope Now, a private allianceof mortgage services, non-profitcounselors and investors helped270,000 homeowners keep their homes in April 2009. The or-ganization reaches at-risk borrow-ers through its Web site,www.hopenow.com and commu-nity events, where homeownerscan meet their lenders directly, aswell as speak to representativesfrom Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac,the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development (HUD)and Legal Aid. Hope Now also op-erates a telephone hotline, wherehomeowners can speak to non-profit counselors, at 1-888-995-HOPE.

Before calling their lender, homeowners should compile theirfinancial information. Before re-structuring a loan, lenders willwant to see hard numbers statingincome and expenses. Homeown-ers also need to be savvy -- scam-mers have found endless ways toprofit from the housing crisis.

Scammers sift through publicforeclosure notices in newspapersor use advertisements to reach des-perate homeowners. Then theytake mortgage payments, home eq-uity or ownership of the home.

To avoid being scammed,Hope Now suggests homeownersbe aware of potential “red flags”:• The service guarantees to stopforeclosure, no matter what.• The service collects an upfrontfee.• The service tells you not tocontact your lender, lawyer orcredit or housing counselor.

• The service only accepts pay-ment by cashier’s check or wiretransfer.• The service encourages you tolease your home so you can buy itback over time.• The service wants to collectyour mortgage payments.• The service tells you to trans-fer your deed or title to it, or of-fers to buy your home at a fixedprice.• The service offers to fill out pa-perwork for you, or pressures youto sign paperwork that you havenot read or do not understand.

To find legitimate help, home-owners need to contact their lenderdirectly or call 1-888-995-HOPEto speak with non-profit coun-selors. To find out about foreclo-sure prevention options, read“Mortgage Payments Sending YouReeling? Here’s What to Do” atwww.ftc.gov.

By Mike Woodard [email protected] It didn’t look like the Watkins Glenn race was going to happen after the rainout Sunday. But Monday was clear enough to get the road on the show. Then it happened...wreck after wreck. Dale Jr. forced out, and a slew of other drivers limping along with damaged rigs. Jeff Gordon’s car looked like a demolished derby car. Names we hadn’t seen for a while rose to the top: David Stremme, Scott Speed, and Kyle Busch. But then Tony Stewart took command and the checkered fl ag, followed by Marcos Ambrose and Carl Edwards. This Sunday - Michigan 1pm. This is a large 2 mile oval (they call it a tri-oval but the front stretch seems to merely be slightly curved...so to me it runs more like an oval. This is a fast track, pushing the upper limits of size before restrictor plates would be necessary, although some folks believe no track should have restrictor plates. Michigan is near the home

of the modern automobile, Detroit, Dearborn, names that remind us of 1905 or 1955 Ford’s or something. Michigan has been devastated by the economic conditions and demise of the big three…but they still call this area home and maybe, just maybe, the American brands are now on their way back up. I look for Dale Earnhardt to be in the hunt at this race. He’s long overdue, has had absurdly bad luck this season...and if he’ll just race as he can rather than “over racing” (which I think has been his problem this season) he’ll at least fi nd himself back in the top ten for a while. Gordon got thumped (and bumped) at Watkins Glenn, and I also look for him to be in the hunt this week. And Tony Stewart seems to have a magic formula going this sea-son...and he’ll be in the game again. Amazing that this is his fi rst year running his own racing team and he is in the hunt for the cup. That is very impressive and gives me a new lever of admiration for him.

Musings On FaithWith Tom Woodard

Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com

If Jesus only discipled twelve men at a time into the deeper walk into the King-dom of God… what makes us think we can spend a week in a foreign country among people whose language we can’t even speak, and disciple two thousand (2000) of them in that short time? IT TAKES TIME TO LOVE PEOPLE INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD. IT TAKES TIME TO MODEL TO PEOPLE WHAT BEING A CHRISTIAN EVEN MEANS. Paul said, “Imitate me.” That’s hard to do when you have people walk an aisle, pray with them to accept Jesus, and then leave. We do that at the home church just like we do in the mission field. What I see in the scripture listed at the beginning of this article that is SO beauti-ful to me is that Jesus KNEW who it was that God had called him to really pour his life into… and he “loved them to the end”. He got down on his knees and washed the feet of these special ones. He wanted to be sure that the QUALITY of life for those he was sent to was understood as to what it should be. This was more impor-tant than the QUANTITY of people that he might have gotten around to see in the three years of his traveling ministry. One of my pet peeves is seeing ministry groups travel all over the world to exotic places to help people, but seeing them look right past the needs of the kids that I work with at the Juvenile Court here in town. Guess that’s good news Jamaica,…but it’s bad news for the Juvenile Court. That’s kinda like pastors who neglect their own families to go out and love others/strangers into the Kingdom. (There’s just something wrong with that picture!) Likewise, I’m suggesting that it might be more important for us as Christians to recognize those to whom God has truly sent us – versus trying to Win The Whole World,… and do a really quality job of loving those individuals “to the end”. Too many Christians have shared with me of being virtually abandoned by those in their fellowships when they were in a time of need. So many, in fact, that I conclude that is the norm. And,…that’s sad. That’s what makes the World sit up and take notice,…..and run! Jesus clearly said, “They will know you are my disciples by the way you love one another”. I want to challenge you: Identify those that God has truly called to show His love to. Focus your ministry there. Go evangelize the World when the opportunity seems right. But, don’t do so at the expense of REALLY loving those special ones God has sent you to care for. Follow the Holy Spirit wherever It sends you. And, wherever, and to whomever you are sent…. persevere in love ----------------- to the End. -David Lee Vail

It really is fun to watch hunters this time of year. We are no different than any other group or even species. I would guess that every animal or mammal has trigger mechanisms – those things that tell them something is about to happen. For instance, we know that certain moon phases trigger certain types of be-havior in some animals. We also know that these trigger points have to do with aspects of how they were created. Some creatures hear at levels above or below that which a human can hear. Some creatures have other sensory perceptions that allow them to detect weather conditions far in advance of our modern technology. Hunters must have something as well; I just don’t know what. But I do know there is something within us that triggers a trip to the hunting store. I don’t think it’s just the fact that it’s August. I think it’s much more complicated than that. Some would say that all of the hunting shows cause us to react the way we do, but I’m not sure. I wonder which comes first, hunting shows or urge to hunt? I actually feel like I’m part of an old science fiction movie where all of the people that the aliens have possessed, come in a trance, to a central location to wait on the mother ship to arrive. No one tells them to come; there’s just an urge that comes over them so strong, they just have to leave. The other day I had this urge. It was drawing me to the sporting goods store. There was just this call – this odd call – that said, “Come.” When I arrived, there were other people there. They too could not say why they came, and some even how they got there, but there we were together, waiting on the mother ship. We looked up to see when she might appear. The day and time was posted on a white eraser board behind the counter. We watched and waited. Even though her coming was several days away, there was just something about being around those things that reminded us of her. The smell of Acorn Rage, corn, and C’mere Deer permeated the aisles. They even played videos of the previous visits. That made the wait harder to endure, but it was good to see how others reacted to that special day. We left after several hours, with only a few reminders in our hands, but enough good memories to carry us on, until that time arrives whereby we leave family and friends on this side and are transported to the other side, where we will be welcomed into the presence of another …HUNTING SEASON!!!!

World Watchwith Mike Woodard

[email protected] I’ve heard enough from pundits saying we don’t need health care reform...there is no doubt that we do. But, I’m also concerned that socialized medicine is big trouble as well. So what can we do? The medical community has forgotten where they are in the world. They’ve taken our nation from spending 5% of every ones income on medical care each year to averaging over 20% of all the dollars spent in America on health care now. Who do they think they are that this one segment of our economy deserve to sink the ship of state for the rest of the economy for them? This is why there is all the talk about socializing medicine. This industry from insurance companies, to hospitals, to malpractice lawyers, to doctors, to pharmaceutical companies….the entire apparatus for providing and pertaining to health care has gotten a very big head. They truly believe they deserve to make the rest of the nation bankrupt for the work that they do. And believe you me, they’ve been very busy. Today the number one reason a person will fi le for bankruptcy is not debt for a home or car or credit card….it’s for medical care. This entire industry has been asking...no, SCREAMING! for the government to step in to do something about the greed. 20% every health care dollar given to medical health insurance companies doesn’t go to health care...it’s their commission. And yes, under socialized medicine government will control what procedures you can get. The government has been doing this for years with Medicare and Medicaid. BUT, insurance companies have also been doing this for years. Even if you have insurance…just get a long term debilitating disease, lose your job and medical insurance….and then tell me who controls whether you get medical care or not. Insurance companies have that power now, and use it regularly. They turn people down for coverage, and dictate what procedures you can and can’t have. Get a serious health problem and they won’t even sell you any insurance. You could die. The “power bases” in our country have become sick with greed and corruption. Medical insurance companies, medical care providers, government, big corporations, energy companies, banks, etc. ALL are fl eecing us because of extreme greed. They don’t know when to quit. 20,000 square foot homes and net worth fi gures so large that common folk can’t even comprehend that amount of money is resulting from this “noble profession? And, they want even more. I’m not sure if government can do it right, but I assure you one thing….the private sector has done a lot of folks wrong. That’s why we’re having a national discussion on socialized medicine. Don’t let the pundits side track you thoughts on this. The entire medical community, by overcharging for practically everything they do, has asked for this situation to be happening. I was taking blood once, working as an RN, and an old man said to me, “Take all my blood Sonny. Every bit. The doctors have taken every penny I saved my entire life. Just go ahead and take it all.”
