PROJECT THE TURTLES HOSPITAL SCOPE OF WORK In 2010, the Marine Protected Area of Capo Carbonara asked us to project the first Turtles Hospital in Sardinia Island in order to accommodate and provide first aid to marine turtles in distress recovered from the sea. The hospital was born in order to be able to host and provide first aid care to the sea turtles recovered from the sea, in difficulty (entangled in nets, ingestion of hooks, etc.). In the case of reporting of a specimen in a difficult technical moves rapidly in order to be ready to operate and arrive on the scene as soon as possible, cause few minutes time can be vital to the specimen life. The Hospital hosted several species of Turtles: Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta) Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelis imbricate) Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) The majority of injures are caused by the ingestion of fishing line, fishing hooks, plastic bags and the boat propellers. The hospital provide: First aid for rescue Turtles Completed standard form (morphological data, health state, site, date, etc.) Transfer to Hospital by water and land vehicles Blood analyses and medical examination Surgery and medical therapy prescribed by veterinary surgeons Rehabilitation Release in nature with the participation of school children (TARTA DAY) Education (Schools and Tourists) Turtle Nest monitoring Recovery and disposal of dead turtles
