Richfield Springs and surrounding area could boast of many who chose carpentry as their trade. One such person, whose name might not be well remembered but whose contribution to the Village was one that would be known for years to come, was John David Williams, born December 19, 1860 to Thomas and Charlotta Anderson Williams of Jordanville, NY. He married Harriet Heacox of New Berlin and they made their home at James Street in Richfield Springs with John becoming a prominent contractor, builder and well known resident. He had a wide range of jobs for which he was contracted. In 1903 he worked for Mr. Alexander Cash in doing numerous changes and renovation to the Cash home near the reservoir. A wide veranda was added to three sides, the interior thoroughly remodeled with modern improvements added. Outbuildings were newly covered and freshly painted with the building that was formerly a hop house transformed into a residence. In May of that year, a new building appeared next to the bathing establishment in the park. It was to become known as the new Cary Cottage. The building was described as consisting of three stories and contained sixteen large rooms

HELPING TO CHANGE THE FACE OF THE VILLAGEwith suitable clothes presses and bath and toilet rooms of the most modern and approved pattern. About one third of the ground floor was made into a reception hall with an artistic fireplace made from natural cobble stones. A veranda ten feet in width runs on the east and south sides and adds to the attractiveness and comfort of the cottage. The cottage was built to offer the needed room to meet the requirements of the increasing business of the Cary Cottages. Mr. J. D. Cary was his own architect and J. D. Williams was in charge of the construction. Many of the hotels used the services of Mr. Williams and his crew as shown by the notice in 1904 that he had closed a contract with E. H. Patrick, manager of the Berkeley-Waiontha to construct housing for a new elevator in the hotel. The elevator was an Otis hydraulic of the latest pattern with safety doors and fireproof. The office of the hotel was also under construction and it would occupy the area that was Greenman’s jewelry store. It was reported that contractor Williams had in his possession and was making his estimate for the cost of a new hotel to be erected at the Garden of the Mills, owned by Richard M. Montgomery in 1906. The intention was to remodel the building that had served as the Weatherbee tannery with the first floor showing a dining room, billiard room, pantries, kitchens, wine and storage cellars, and

laundry room. Along the east side would be a veranda. The second floor would have a magnificent white ballroom, offices, ladies’ dressing rooms and a library. The third floor with pergola corresponding to the one of the second floor, would be devoted to suites with bath. The fourth floor would be for the servants’ apartments and storage. The idea was to preserve the quaint character of the old building and yet produce a modern, fine summer hotel. The year of 1906 also saw plans drafted for a dancing and skating pavilion to be erected on the Lake House grounds. Always up for a challenge, 1907 found Williams creating a lunch wagon for W. H. Hersey. The new rectory of St. John’s church was completed in 1910 thanks to Williams and his crew. It was described as being built with much care and thought, the various rooms finished in natural wood. The Berkeley-Waiontha had an additional plaza built in 1917 extending eastward nearly to Bloomfield’s Hotel. 1920 brought the remodeling of the front of the Elk Opera Block into two stores on the street level. Carpentry was not the only interest of Mr. Williams. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge F&AM, Little Falls Commandery and Ziyara Temple in Utica. He served on the board of education of the local school and was at one time assessor of the Village. In 1910,

he served as a delegate for the Democratic caucus in Cooperstown. He died in 1948 but the detail of his carpentry work and mastery in his designs are still a part of the Village scene for all to enjoy.
