From a whisper to a

ROAR!

Liz McGettigan @lizmcgettigan [email protected]

We are all doing so much amazing stuff but we just don’t tell anyone!!

WE NEED TO FIND OUR VOICE!

We’re all in favour of them and get a warm, fuzzy feeling about them.

But saying how much we adore them doesn’t protect

bamboo-munchers or libraries from extinction.

LIBRARIES ARE A BIT LIKE PANDAS

………consider this !

Once books were the only currency For Joe Public to

learn and the public library

filled that gap

..but the world has never changed so quickly

The top 10 jobsin 2016 didn’t exist in 2010

More than 150 million people will be born this year…

….they will be born into a technological and information led

economy

……but

….despite the challenges we are still here!

ACROSS THE WORLD LIBRARIANS ARE INNOVATING….

OUR EDGE –OUR VALUES - PRIVACY, DIVERSITY, EQUALITY….

………look who wants our space !

Clearly the private sector

sees opportunities???

Burnout from our battle for funding is one of the most significant threats to public sector

librarianshipXX

Why the Library experience must evolve!

I am your new customer, I am unique, I want to be special, pay me real attention, excite me, open my

eyes and make my time with you a fabulous experience

The reading experience has evolved

..begs the question -What has your library got for me in a year’s time?

……….learning has changed

Learning and communication is now a collaborative, contributive experience

… a group, interactive, visual experience

THE LIBRARY EXPERIENCE

THE PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HAS EVOLVED

… every day we are helping people navigate the digital world!

…. we are bringing digitally focused but socially isolated people together in the

physical world

....we are enabling people-to-people experiences– The human library

..enabling virtual reality experiences

…we are enabling fun, visual and interactive knowledge experiences

You ain’t seen nothing yet!

…every day across the UK many of us are introducing people to new technology experiences!

and portals.

…….. who will introduce Joe Public to all of these new technologies?

…….who will skill him up for the new world as we once did with books and access to the internet?

Excellence in experiences

Incremental change will

not be enough, radical

transformation is required if we are to meet future challenges

ASK YOURSELF - How exactly is digital technology

changing the way your customers behave and the

way that existing, emerging and potential

competitors do business?

We need to get better at• Analytics - data and

insights are the starting points

• Marketing technology can support exceptional customer experiences

Remaining relevant is not simply

a matter of creating an app or

smartening up your website, but

finding ways to use customer

data to create more meaningful

and relevant customer

experiences at every touch point

• x• Own the smart city

agenda!• Start thinking ROI and

monetising some of the add-ons we do!

• New serious partnerships!

• Value what we do!

Find a big loud voice!

It is clear that librarianship of the future is not for those who seek a quiet

refuge or who won’t embrace ongoing change

in the information, technology, and

community needs landscapes.

“there are those who will ask where are libraries going today?

Then there are those of us who will tell you where we are taking libraries”

Hope Schaller Wester

Which one are you?

who owns the future of the public library?

….you do!
