Turners Shipping (Pty) Ltd is one of South Africa’s leading Freight Management and Logistics Companies, employing over 200 professionals and with an annual turnover in excess of R3 billion.

INTRODUCTION


In 2011 Turners Shipping formalized a formal working agreement with BDP International establishing Turners Shipping as the South African partner in this global organisation. The two Companies share an objective and working ethos as well as operational processes.

BDP is an international freight logistics company which was founded on the objective of being the best global logistics provider on the planet. From its headquarters in Philadelphia, USA, BDP has grown into a global company with operations in more than 1000 locations in over 130 countries.

Both Turners Shipping and BDP have their origins in a family business and today, despite their size, pride themselves in staying true to their core values. Our approach to business is simple: We get to know our customers by listening and learning about their needs. Then we deliver individually tailored solutions that can improve efficiency and minimize costs. All of our Customers benefit from the partnership between Turners Shipping and BDP International as we are able to deploy the best logistics information tools in finding solutions and providing service.

Report Cards — Each station’s performance is captured through a monthly Station Report Card that helps us improve our processes and adopt corrective action plans to better service our customers.

COMPANY HISTORY

Turners Shipping is one of the oldest privately owned logistics companies in South Africa. The company was established by David Turner in 1896, at a time when ox wagons and sailing ships were the primary modes of transport. Turner’s business, then called Turner and Co (Natal) (Pty) Ltd, operated as a Customs Clearing agent from the Port of Durban.

The business thrived, and in 1901 Turner invited John Cochrane-Murray, who had a background in banking, to join him as a full partner on a salary of £18 a year.

Tragedy struck when David Turner, his wife, and five children boarded the luxurious passenger liner the SS Waratah intending to visit their ancestral home in England. The Waratah was the most advanced vessel of its time and was regarded as unsinkable.

The ship, with 221 passengers and crew, left Durban on July 26, 1909 but never reached Cape Town. No sign of the ship or its passengers was ever found. Turner and his family were among those who died at sea. Cochrane-Murray had lost his business partner but decided to keep the business going, retaining the Turner name in memory of his friend.

Over the years the organisation grew and expanded into transport and logistics areas of operation, which has resulted in the formation of The Turner Group of Companies.

Today The Turner Group is made up of Companies involved in activities, which include Warehousing, Customs Clearing, International Freight Forwarding, Distribution, Trade Finance, Travel and Event Management.

Now, after over 100 years from establishment, Turners Shipping (Pty) Ltd operates in conjunction with the worldwide BDP Global network and is able to provide a comprehensive value added logistics service on a door-to-door basis, to and from any location in the world.

Models of the ill-fated Waratah have pride of place in the offices of Turners Shipping in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. They were commissioned by the current Group CEO Conrad Cochrane Murray as

a reminder of the company’s origin.

This department was established in response to increasing trade with rapidly developing economies and markets in Africa. South Africa is the gateway into the rest of Southern Africa by overland freight and now Turners Shipping has a specialised Africa Network which is perfectly positioned to allow customers access to these markets.

The Africa Network provides for a dedicated freight service and offers a complete export package.

After Hours ServiceOur key staff are readily contactable on a 24/7 basis. Their cellular phone numbers are made available to Clients should the need for after-hours service arise.

Claims ManagementWe provide assistance with regard to Marine Insurance and other clearing and forwarding related claims and manage these on behalf of the client.

Customs Tariff ConsultationsSouth Africa has one of the more complex customs systems in the world. Some of our tariff consultants are experienced ex-customs officers with years of experience both in customs and in the freight forwarding industry. We are therefore well equipped to provide professional advice to ensure our Clients have the competitive edge.

Detailed EstimatesWe offer a detailed estimate of costs for all cargo handled by us at no additional cost. The Client simply forwards a request via e-mail that is attended to promptly.

Disbursement FinancingTurners Shipping is able to offer Finance to cover the clearing and forwarding costs either on a short or extended term basis. Terms of up to 120 days may be negotiated subject to credit approval.

DistributionStrategic alliance partnerships with leading transport organisations provide for full and part load distribution services.

Document AuditsWe undertake document audits on a no charge basis on the understanding that we retain a small percentage of any possible recoveries.

Document DeliveriesOn completion of each shipment the relevant shipping documents are delivered electronically or directly to our clients’ premises via messenger or courier.

Door-to-Door ServiceWe offer door to door services for imports and exports irrespective of the size of the consignment or the mode of transport.

EDI FacilitiesWe are able to install software on our Client’s computers which provides access to the many user facilities on our IT System. These include: Customs Tariffs; Status Reports; Container Packing Calculator; Rates of Exchange and details of shipments being handled by us. It is also possible for Clients to finalise costings on shipments processed by us.

International Freight ForwardingTurners Shipping is the exclusive South African agent for the international BDP network, with 1000 office locations in over 130 countries throughout the world.

Import & Export Permit ApplicationsAs part of our on-going commitment to customer service, we have established a liaison office in Pretoria. We are able to have permits processed and delivered within days rather than weeks.

Track & TraceTurners Shipping Track and Trace reporting allows our clients to view real time data and back history on all their shipments. Access to electronic copies of documents are conveniently available for download from the Track & Trace system.

ISO 9001:2008 Quality ControlTurners Shipping’s present certification is ISO 9001:2008, audited by Dekra Certification Services GmbH. DCS is a German organization, which has been notified to the Commission of the EU by the Federal Ministries and is the designated organization.

Client requirements are incorporated into Work Instructions, which are made available to clients.

Logistical SolutionsIn consultation with our Clients we design logistical solutions and manage them. Our services include the full management of all aspects of logistics including warehouse-to-warehouse services. These are backed up by excellent tracking systems providing constant status reports. Through regular meetings with Clients we ensure that issues are being attended to effectively.

Marine InsuranceWe are able to provide Marine Insurance at competitive rates through the leading South African marine insurance specialist, Eikos.

International Cross TradeThrough our network of overseas offices we are able to provide our Clients with trading opportunities with countries outside South Africa.

Personal ContactTurners Shipping encourages our senior management and professional staff members to be available at all times for our clients. We understand that in a fast moving business environment our decision makers and advisors are an integral part of our Client’s success.

Personalised Computer Activity ReportsThrough our comprehensive computer system, we are able to personalise a computer report regarding our Client’s import/export activity being managed by us. For example, the activity report could list Import Permits reflecting their balances and expiry dates. We can also provide statistics per tariff item imported. All statistical information we process can be formatted into an easy to understand report for our Clients’ use.

Port SupervisionWe provide staff members to supervise Port activities as required by our Clients both locally and abroad.

Project Management/ForwardingThrough our international freight forwarding network arrangement with BDP Logistics, we are able to provide for Project Forwarding on a worldwide basis. We employ and manage organisations within the supply chain to ensure that projects are finalised as per the client’s requirement.

Purchase Order Management SystemThe POMS report operates in conjunction with the individual Shipment Status Report, but deals with the organisations entire shipment portfolio. Pertinent details are recorded i.e. each shipment’s identification, expected delivery time, actual arrival date and final delivery. This provides the Client with a total shipment update, which is essential for dynamic planning purposes. The POMS report is submitted at intervals as required by the Client.

Road TransportationThrough strategic alliances with major Transport Operators in both South and Southern Africa, we are able to offer a first class service for our Clients at very competitive prices.

Scheduled Client MeetingsIn addition to regular service follow-up calls, we arrange meetings where all role players are present to discuss progress. Minutes are taken and action points made.

SLA and SOPService Level Agreement (SLA) and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). Both SLA and SOPs are the recommended prerequisite to ensure service expectations and standards are being met.

Status ReportsWe automatically generate a status report for each shipment, which will then be transmitted to the Client at regular intervals until final delivery is achieved. This ensures that the client always has reliable and accurate information at their fingertips.

WarehousingTurners Shipping is able to provide both bonded and general warehousing facilities in key located warehouses throughout South Africa. In this regard, we have strategic alliances with specialised companies equipped to handle a full range of storage, handling and distribution requirements.
