FORMATION OF MOUNT IDA

• While the location of Mount Ida was a shallow sea about 200 –300 million years ago, it evaluated because of the load and high heat inside the curst of the earth. It reached to the surface as a result of the geological events which affected the earth deeply. Approximately 5 million-year ago a part of this formation submerged with a collapsing and formed EdremitGulf and another part of this formation formed Mount Ida.

• Mount Ida is a mountain in Northwestern Turkey, southeast of the ruins of Troy, along the northcoast of the Gulf of Edremit. Thename Mount Ida is the ancient one. Itis between Balıkesir Province and Çanakkale Province

• Mount Ida is lightly populated uplandmassif of about 700 km² located tothe north of Edremit. A number of small villages in the region areconnected by paths. Drainage is mainlyto the south, into the Gulf of Edremit, also known as Edremit Bay, where thecoast is rugged and is known as "theOlive Riviera.".

• Currently a modest 2.4 km² of Mount Ida are protected by Kaz Dağı National Park, created in 1993.

• Ida Mount’s 21.463 hectare-part that surrounded by Edremit City which is connected to Balıkesirwas declared as a “National Park” in 17th April 1993. 240 hectare-part of Ida Mount was also declared as a “Protected Natural Area” to safe the endemic Mount Ida Fir in 15th June 1998.

WHY DO PEOPLE GO MOUNT IDA?

• The park offers numerous hiking trails, canyons, waterfalls, natural springs, indigenous fir trees, and a uniquely-preserved flora. Some of the canyons and cliffs require special equipment or experience, so eco-tourism guides are available to accompany outdoor enthusiasts. Permission from the Akçay National Park Engineering Centre near the coast is essential for these hikes. Some of the established trails will take you through Turcoman villages along the way that will give you a glimpse of traditional lifestyles. Following the Kızılkeçili Stream will bring you to the Sütüven Waterfall which is 17 m high, where there is a designated picnic area. Just 500 meters away are the rocks of Hasanboğuldu.

• The skirts of Mount Ida is largely covered by forests and settlement around is quite rare. Forests in the upper slopes consist of mainly Ida Fir ( Abies nordmanniana subsp. Equitrojani ) and they also include a sub-species of endemic Fir which grows only on Mount Ida in Turkey.

• On the low parts of the North Slope, oak and some maquis elements can be seen. Climbing through the upper sides oak, chestnut, fir and torch pine are seen. Beach tree also composes an important part oF Ida flora.
