LieS tHe BLAck SeA, along whose
shores the fortunes of ancient empires
waxed and waned. Aboard the sleek new
yacht variety voyager, circumnavigate
this legendary body of water, beginning
and ending in Istanbul, the cultural
crossroads of Europe and Asia and a
repository of astonishing treasures.
During this 11-night cruise, call on historic
cities in Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine,
and Bulgaria: Trabzon, home of the
4th-century Sumela Monastery, adorned
with biblical frescoes; Batumi, site of a
remarkable botanical garden; Sochi, 2014
host of the Winter Olympics and favorite
of Stalin; Sevastopol, former outpost of
the Soviet Navy; Odessa, whose Potemkin
Steps were made famous in the 1925
silent movie Battleship Potemkin; varna,
whose museum displays magnificent
Scythian gold treasures; and Nesebar, a
city-museum of Byzantine architecture.
Explore the region’s storied past and
current political climate in the company
of former ambassador Nicholas Burns,
who has extensive career experience in
Russia and Ukraine. Along the way
enjoy energetic and colorful dance and
music performances that highlight the
cultural traditions of each country, and
sample a variety of delicious local
cuisines. To extend your adventure,
join the optional post-trip extension
to Cappadocia, land of towering fairy
chimneys, in Central Anatolia.
Visit the ancient Greek Orthodox Sumela Monastery tucked into the cliffs of the Pontic Mountains, where colorful frescoes recreate scenes from the Bible. (Cover) Istanbul’s Blue Mosque delights with its multiple minarets, domes of varying sizes, and beautiful Iznik tiles lining the interior.
