    1.1.History and Art

Italy, a land of art and history

Italy has been, since antiquity, the centre of history, culture and art. Our museums, collectionsand archaeological sites reveal countless tokens of the past and the many civilizations thathave passed across this country, evidence of which is still inextricably woven into the presentday landscape.

Artistic wonders can be found everywhere, and every corner of the country holds countlessand wonderful surprises. Our artistic and cultural heritage is one of the most valuable in theworld. Italy has more cultural UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any oth er country. Rome, Florence, Assisi, Venice, Siena, Pisa, and Naples are its most renowned citiesof art , but the whole country can boast towns of breathtaking beauty, as these numbersdemonstrate: 95,000 monumental churches, 40,000 forts and castles, 30,000 historicalresidences with 4,000 gardens, 36,000 archives and libraries, 20,000 historical cities andtowns, 5,600 museums and archaeological sites, and 1,500 convents.

Tourists can explore and discover the private residences of ancient and noble families; visitworld famous museums such as the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Capitoline Museums inRome, or the Brera Art Gallery in Milan; explore impressive archaeological sites, suchas Pompei and Herculaneum, to immerse themselves in an exciting, grandiose past. That is byno means all - there are numerous cultural, artistic, and musical events that animate Italianlife.

Italy offers a rich combination of masterpieces from different areas, blending landscape and

culture, history and art, architecture and city planning - it offers an exciting journey throughtime, from the Ancient Greeks and Romans to the present day, which is also filled by a wealthof art and culture.

Roman law prohibited burying of the dead inside the old city walls, for sanitary reasons. Theancient Roman ways were lined with elaborate gravesites of society patricians; they wereoften cremated and their ashes were preserved in urns. The first Christians, rather, maintaining that they should be ready for the Resurrection, were not cremated but buried inthe underground caves, dug in tufo or lava stone.

Once their bodies were wrapped in two layers of cloth soaked with lye (to stave off risk of

contamination), they were then deposited in niches inside the cave walls.

Scholarly opinion varies in regards to the catacombs. While some hold that the first Christiansused the catacombs as places of refuge from persecution, others believe that they weremeeting-points for honoring the deceased particularly martyrs and Popes usually with a

    banquet or feast.

Today the tutelage of the Christian catacombs is entrusted to the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (The Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology), which managesexcavations and restorations.

The International tourism; number of arrivals in Italy was last reported at 43626000 in 2010,according to a World Bank report published in 2012. International inbound tourists (overnightvisitors) are the number of tourists who travel to a country other than that in which they havetheir usual residence, but outside their usual environment, for a period not exceeding 12months and whose main purpose in visiting is other than an activity remunerated from withinthe country visited. When data on number of tourists are not available, the number of visitors, which includes tourists, same-day visitors, cruise passengers, and crew members, is showninstead. Sources and collection methods for arrivals differ across countries. In some cases dataare from border statistics (police, immigration, and the like) and supplemented by border surveys. In other cases data are from tourism accommodation establishments. For somecountries number of arrivals is limited to arrivals by air and for others to arrivals staying inhotels. Some countries include arrivals of nationals residing abroad while others do not.Caution should thus be used in comparing arrivals across countries. The data on inboundtourists refer to the number of arrivals, not to the number of people traveling.
