Phnom Penh / Cambodia / Half DayDiscover the history and horror of the Khmer Rouge on this half day experience.A visit to the Choeung Ek Killing Fields is a must on any visit to Cambodia as it helps to give a clear understanding of its recent history. More than 8000 skulls are visible behind the clear glass panels of the Memorial, which was erected in 1988. Toul Sleng Genocide MuseumThe security prison facility (S-21) was turned into a museum shortly after Phnom Penh was liberated by the Vietnamese Army in 1979. A museum archive was established to preserve the approximately 6,000 black and white negatives and 20,000 pages of written documents found in the detention facility. Each room holds countless stories of fear, horror and pain. The full story of what happened here will never be known.Choeung Ek Killing FieldAbout 17,000 men, women, children and infants who were detained and killed in S-21 were transported to Choeung Ek Camp (a genocidal centre) to mass graves between 1975 and 1978. Choeung Ek Killing Fields serves as the cemetery of the dead Cambodians during the atrocities. This soccer-field-sized area surrounded by farmland served as the killing field of the Cambodian prisoners including women and children. Today, the Killing Field has a memorial stupa (which means “heap”, a dome-shaped structure built as a Buddhist shrine) to symbolise the cruelty and barbaric act of Pol Pot to Khmer people.http://www.azooki.com/tuol-sleng-genocide-museum-choeung-ek-killing-field-html.html
