Part 1: Overall Crime & Safety Situation

crime...”

Tunisia Security Update

Target selection…

1. people unfamiliar with their surroundings,

2. draw attention to themselves,

3. not speaking local language….

Most reported criminal incidents against

foreigners are crimes of opportunity…

Be aware of young men on motor scooters…

snatch-and-run tactics…

Residential Security

“Most home and apartment burglaries often occur during the day, when most people

are away and happen in both expatriate and Tunisian

neighborhoods…”

Part 2: Transportation-Safety Situation

Road safety poses one of the greatest risks to

foreign travelers…

“Become well aware of the neighborhoods, local traffic patterns, and road culture..”

Drives often fail to obey traffic

signs/signals…

Do not assume that pedestrians are aware of oncoming traffic…

Uniformed police officers are generally at

most major intersections in major

cities…

Drivers involved in traffic accidents not

involving physical injury to an individual are not required to file a traffic

report…

Conditions

Taking public buses or minibuses is strongly

discouraged…

Americans on official business are authorized

to take taxis…

Do not use a taxi that will not use the meter or claims “the meter is

not working…”

Ethnic Violence

Political Violence Rating for Tunisia:

HIGH

“A state of emergency is in currently in place…”

Grants the government additional powers…

“The government is undertaking extensive anti-terrorism

operations against Ansar Al-Shari’a in Tunisia…”

“This group was involved in the two political assassinations in Tunis (2013) and the attack on

the U.S. Embassy and American School (Sep 2012)…”

Terrorism Rating for Tunisia:

HIGH

“Extremist groups with links to AQIM have infiltrated the region and attacked Tunisia’s military along the country’s

western border…”

“In 2014 (2015), there were numerous clashes between security forces and terrorist

elements including:

“March 18, 2015; an attack by terrorists at the Bardo

Museum left 24 people dead (20 foreign tourists) and 47

injured…”

“June 26th, 2015: Gunman opened fire and killed 38 tourists, mainly Britons.”

“There is a general threat of kidnapping not

only directed at Westerners…”
