The TUMI Hackathon showed how information and data that overlay our cities - the ‘infostructure’ - un-lock infrastructure efficiencies and drive smart and digital mobility fu-tures. Among the many transport -related Big Data projects, the event stands out in that it considers informal transport, empowers user choice and encourages developing countries to start thinking about data collection and planning.

Above all women, children and people with reduced mobility are suffering daily under the urban mobility crisis in their cities; at the same time missing transport infra-structure and lacking public trans-port leads to cities falling back and not becoming machines of growth and forces of sustainable develop-ment.

The basic assumption underpinning the event was that innovation is no longer optional; it is essential so cities can continue to deliver results and improve the life of their residents.

The TUMI hackathon facilitates the development of digital solutions addressing this aim.

The intersection of information, technology, and cities increasingly dominates the world we live in. The goal of the TUMI Hackathon Nairobi was to shape this world. More than 50 entrepreneurs, pro-grammers and designers came together over 48 hours. Their goal was to find digital solutions that will enable individuals and organisations to improve access to mobility for millions of people. The event was organized by the Transformative Urban Mobility In-itiative (TUMI) in cooperation with Facebook and the South-African Start-Up WhereIsMyTransport.

Winning Ideas

During this short but intense event, 9 teams were able to to come up with promising and innovative ideas. The most innovative and disruptive ideas received awards and support to develop their products to market-readiness. Winning teams will be supported in future activities and receive continued support and mentoring by TUMI, Facebook, WhereIsMy-Transport and associated partner organizations.

Journey Planning featuring a neural route optimization engine

Gamification (foursquare for public transportation)

Monetization through targeted local business ads

Babas Matatu

A matatutu gamification app inte-grating seamless, flexible journey planning with informal public trans-

port and on-demand taxi services (such as Uber). The gamification element allows users to compete with each other to win ‚badges‘. Badges are awarded for the fastest trip, the cheapest trip, taking the loudest matatu, taking the most accessoried matatu as well as other categories. The app also allows users to rate their matatu trip based on a series of criteria - all in the name of ‚making matatus great again!‘

On-Demand door-to-door deli-very by micro-jobbing via public transport

Creation of employment oppor-tunities and reduction of transport demand

Monetization trhough servie charge

Zamacho

A peer-to-peer on-demand delivery service that uses public transport, in-stead of private delivery services or

Uber to move goods across the city. If you need something delivered, you can micro-job it to someone and that person will take public transport to complete the delivery. The app aims to create employment opportunities for citizens of Nairobi, whilst at the same time reducing transport demand by incentivizing usage of existing public transport trips to promote more affordable travel for goods and people.
