On behalf of the Tulsa County Dental Society and our executive committee, welcome

back to the start of another year. We thank you for your continued support of organized

dentistry and your membership within our association. I hope all of our members have had a

wonderful summer and were able to take some time with friends and family for a little fun and

relaxation.

Our TCDS agenda is already in full swing and our executive committee has done a

great job putting together an excellent year of programming for both evening and all--day

meetings. I would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Chris Mastin and Dr. Richard Brown

for putting together a quality continuing education schedule for this year. Mark your calendar

for our first evening meeting, Tuesday, September 11, at Tiamo’s where Dr. Robert

Augsburger will present “A New Concept in Rotary Canal Preparation”.

You should have already received correspondence concerning our upcoming

fundraising event for Mr. Jim Bridenstine on Thursday, September 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the home

of Dr. Robie Herman. As you may know, Mr. Bridenstine defeated Congressman John

Sullivan in a primary election for the 1st Congressional District of Oklahoma back in June of

this year. Mr. Bridenstine now faces a general election on November 6th

. While we thank

Congressman Sullivan for his many years of service and his support of dentistry and small

business, we now look to the future, developing new relationships with candidates that share

our same concerns facing healthcare today. Dr. Robie Herman and Dr. Jim Torchia have

graciously offered to host this event at the home of Dr. Herman. I would like to thank them

for their willingness to serve our association. You will be receiving a formal invitation in the

days to come and I look forward to seeing everyone then.

Our association works tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure our profession has a

voice in our state and federal legislatures. We cannot accomplish this without your support

financially, as well as your active participation. If you have not paid your DENPAC dues for

2012, I strongly encourage you to do so at this time. And please make plans now to

participate in Dentist Day at the Capitol, a time when we all work on building our

relationships with our State Senators and Representatives. Our next Dentist Day at the

Capital is scheduled for Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Please make this a priority in your

schedule for next year. Now more than ever, our profession is challenged with keeping the

dentist as the head of the oral health team. In this year alone, we have already deflected

independent practice legislation proposed by the Oklahoma Dental Hygiene Association from

ever being heard on the floor of the state legislature. These are concerns that our association

has been dealing with for many years and our charge to continually fight for the wellbeing of

our profession and the protection of our patients will be steadfast.

Special Thanks

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Katie Vestal who you may know is a

representative from Colgate. At our last executive committee meeting, Dr. Richard Brown

had shared a story about his time volunteering in a community center in the Creek County area

where he found that there was a huge need for toothpaste and toothbrushes for not only the

victims of the tragic wildfire, but also the volunteers who have spent countless hours helping

those in need. I contacted Katie and made her aware of the need. I was very surprised to find

that in less than a 24--hour period of time, Katie had delivered over 1000 toothbrushes and

tubes of toothpaste to my office so that I could get them distributed to those in need. Now this

is just one of the many stories that I hear every year concerning benevolent dentistry within

our state, but I thought it perfectly illustrates the attitude of, not only our members, but our

industry vendors, as well. From OKMOM and the ODF Mobile Unit, to EODDS and Mother

Theresa Dental Clinic (and there are many more), none of this would be possible without our

members or the countless vendors that donate money, supplies, and equipment. If you see

Katie, or any other representative that is associated with a company that assists our association

Adding/Changing Your Photo

1. Have Rhonda take your photo at an upcoming meeting or email a photo to her at rhonda@tcdsonline.com OR

2. For you do it yourselfers… a. On “Profile” page, select “choose file”. Note: please keep image file size small

so that the pages will load quickly. You can reduce image size through your own imaging software or by right clicking on the file in Windows Explorer, select SEND TO/MAIL RECIPIENT option and email the picture to your own email address. You get an option to reduce the picture size when you send it. The new file will be much smaller and will still look fine in the directory.

b. After file is selected, click “upload” on profile page. You may have to refresh page or re-open browser to view the change.
