Dimensions in Accuracy and
Repeatability
Traditional microhardness machines use a
series of stacked dead weights to apply the
indentation load to the surface of the sample.
A series of levers and knobs allows you to pickfrom a limited number of weights, and a
dashpot, or cam, determines how fast the
weight contacts the sample once the weight is
released. Despite a number of potential
errors, this type of testing has been used for
decades. With the Tukon 2100, those potential
errors are all but eliminated.
Superior Test Control
The traditional hardness testing systems
described above are "open-loop" design.
They lack the ability to measure and ensure
that the proper loading conditions have been
achieved. The Tukon 2100 uses "closed-loop"
control technology to measure and control the
force applied to the sample. The result is
improved accuracy, and dramatically
improved flexibility. Now there is a virtually
unlimited selection of test loads and loading/unloading rates for virtually any test
condition imaginable.
Superior Accuracy
One of the many sources of inaccurate results
is the improper application of the indenter
load. Traditional systems have mechanical
components that can wear over time,
resulting in overshoot and higher thanexpected loads. The result is potentially,
inaccurate hardness readings. The control
system in the Tukon 2100 virtually eliminates
overshoot through sophisticated algorithms
that detect contact with the surface and
anticipate the maximum desired test load.
Available Features and Benefits
I Closed-loop control - superior accuracy and repeatabilityI Virtually unlimited testing conditions - superior flexibilityI 5-station turret - configure the system to meet your needsI Precision manual and automatic x-y stages - exact placement of indentationsI 2 force ranges (10 gf - 1 kgf, 300 gf - 30 kgf) - covers the bulk of testing needsI Less set-up time than traditional testers - more testing timeI Automatic test cycle - more consistent test conditions and resultsI User-adjustable load application time: 0.1 to 99 secondsI User-adjustable dwell times: 0.1 to 99 secondsI Overload protection - virtually eliminates load cell and indenter damageI R2-232 serial port - send results directly to the printerI I/O port - allows use of external devices such as alarms, robots, or switchesI Optional automatic turret - for ease of use and productivityI Optional AutoTest Assistant - for improved productivityI Complies with ASTM E384, E92 and ISO 6507I Backed by 2-year warranty and the worlds largest factory service organization
Superior Repeatability
Accurate results depend on the ability to
produce consistent, repeatable test conditions.
The Tukon 2100 is in a class by itself in this
category by virtue of the control it has over
loading rate, dwell time, and unloading rate.
Superior Productivity
Since the application and removal of the test
loads are fully automatic, repeatability is
improved, testing time is reduced, and
throughput is increased. Costly and time
consuming rework is eliminated.

The Tukon 2100 tester is ideal for quality
assurance, quality control, research and
development and metallurgical departments.
It can be used to monitor hardness during
development, fabrication, heat treatment and
the performance analysis of a variety of
products and components.
The Tukon 2100 with a precision x-y stage
makes it possible to locate indentations
accurately. The Vickers indenter, allows
crystals as small as 7 may be tested, while
with the Knoop indenter, allows crystals less
than 20 long may be tested. Ferrous and
non-ferrous coatings, sheet, foil and fine
drawn wire can be tested for through
hardness and surface hardness variations due
to fabrication. Induction, carburized, nitrided
and cyanided case hardness can be tested, as
well as electroplated, galvanized and plasma
sprayed surfaces. The most common test done
with a microindentation tester is for the
determination of case depth on carburized
parts. A Tukon 2100 with the fully automated
AutoTest Assistant PremiumAutoTest Assistant Premium option can
determine case depth automatically without
operator measurement of the indent size.
Other applications including hardness testing
of welded sections, small precision parts such
as screw machine products, stampings and
metal bearings, tiny watch gears, ends of
balance staff pivots, hair-springs, pellets of
pen points, hypodermic needles and electricalconnectors, PC board terminals, screws and
other fastening and retaining devices can also
be tested for microhardness using the Tukon
2100. Wilson Instruments offers a wide
variety of standard and custom mounting
fixtures to suit your testing needs. A few of
these accessory fixtures are shown.

Vickers Scale
The Vickers hardness is calculated by dividing
the applied force by the surface area of the
indentation. A table allows calculation of theVickers number once the diagonals of the
indentation have been measured. A Vickers
indenter is a diamond, ground to a square-
based pyramid with a 136 angle between
faces and leaves a square indentation with an
diagonal length that is about 7 times the
depth of the indentation. The micro Vickers
test force range (10 gf to 1 kgf) is used for
applications similar to the Knoop method.
The macro Vickers test force range (above1 kgf) is generally used for larger specimens
that could also be tested using Rockwell or
Brinell testers.
Microindentation is used on test specimens
with a thickness or area that is insufficient
to accommodate the larger indentations ofother test scales and typically uses 10 gf to
30 kgf forces and small pointed diamond
indenters. Test specimens must be well
finished and free of imperfections to allow
the hardness values to be determined by
optical measurements with a high powered
microscope.
Knoop Scale
The Knoop hardness is calculated by dividing
the applied force by the projected area of the
indentation. A Knoop indenter is a diamond, ground to a elongated pyramidal form and
produces an elongated indentation, with
approximately a 7:1 ratio between the long
and short diagonals, and a 30:1 ratio between
the length and depth of the indentation. The
172 30' longitudinal angle and 130 0'
transverse angle of the pyramid shaped Knoop
indenter allows accurate measurement of
small force indentations. A table provides the
Knoop hardness value once the length of theindentation has been measured. The Knoop
indenter, is extremely useful in testing hard,
brittle material like glass and coatings.
Knoop testing uses 10 gf to 1 kgf test forces.
