Happy New Year………...

Welcome to the January edition of your Tuffley Link.

I trust that when you receive this you will have had a fun and festive Christmas period and are

now looking towards celebrating the new year ahead and all that it may hold.

2013 is going to be a celebratory year in ’The L-D’ (Link Directories) household, with both my-

self and my husband celebrating certain milestone birthdays, along with some very good friends

of ours - I feel a few parties on the horizon!! I’m due to be an Auntie again this year , and I’m

Matron of honour for one of my best friends at her wedding taking place later in the year - think

its time for the diet and fitness to start before the celebrations begin!!

Is New Year a time that you also start to think about diet

and fitness for the year ahead - and yes I know we all start

with good intentions, but I plan on sticking to it this year!!

• Firm around any shrubs or plants that have been loosened by the wind this pre-vents hollows in the soil filling with water and freezing during the very cold weather.

• Towards the end of the month cover an area of the Veg plot with fleece, plastic or cloches this will help warm up the soil for the spring, dry up the surface to give you a head start on the season.

• Seed potatoes should appear in garden centres this month, get in early whilst there is a good choice of varieties. Stand them on end in a seed tray in a light frost free place this encourages them to produce short shoots/sprouts called ‘chits’. This ensures they get off to a good start when you plant them out in the spring. • If your greenhouse is empty, clean and fumigate ready for the new season. You can force a few early crops like winter lettuce, lambs lettuce radishes etc..
