NURSE’S CORNERGerianne Pearson, R.N.

Lions with Tigers Oh My!Good vision plays an important role in your child’s education. For that reason, students in Louisiana receive vision screening in certain grades during the first semester of the school each year. Students are screened in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th grade.

We are partnering with the Lion’s Club for our school vision screening this year. The screening will occur on September 20th and the consents will go home with your student today. Please return your student’s consent form no later than Friday, September 13th. The Lion’s Club uses the Plusoptix screener. Advantages of this screener include greater reliability than manual screening in a fraction of the time. The Plusoptix screener uses infrared light that is totally harmless to the child’s eyes. Screening is performed one meter away from the child in less than one second. This device provides simultaneous measurement of both eyes (binocular). Screening does not rely on the student’s ability to concentrate on the screening, respond to screening questions or have dilated eyes.

Above (left) is a picture of how your child will be screened. Above (right) is what your child will see. The student is asked to look at the nose on the happy face and that is it!

Screening ResultsPlusoptix Vision Screening devices provide reliable measurement values of:Full refraction recording, i.e. sphere, cylinder, and axis for follow-up examinationPupil diameter and pupil distanceSymmetry of corneal reflexesWith these measurement values it is possible to detect e.g. following most prevalent childhood vision disorders that may lead to the de-velopment of amblyopia (lazy eye), Hyperopia (farsightedness), Myopia, (nearsightedness), Astigmatism (blurred vision), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Anisocoria (unequal pupil size), Strabismus (Eye misalignment) and Media opacities (e.g. cataracts or corneal scars).

With the determined measurement values compared to age specific thresholds, a “Pass” or “Refer” vision screening result is displayed. Children with a “Refer” result will be manually screened and verified by before the need for professional follow up is recommended. Please remember, this is only a screening. It can be a useful tool to identify the need to see an eye care professional for a full eye exami-nation. Consents with be sent home today. Please return them in a timely manner.

Wishing you a healthy week ahead,

Nurse Geri

During the season, your girl and her team will work together to create and execute a community service project. This experience demonstrates to girls the unimaginable strength that comes from helping others, leaving her better prepared to make her mark on the world!

For our community impact project we made cards and signs for kids who were in the hospital. It made me feel good to do something special for someone else”– Jade, 11

The Girls on the Run Difference

EVERYgirl. Girls on the Run is for

Girls on the Run is a program like no other! Girls will have fun, make friends, increase their physical activity levels and learn important life skills.

Girls on the Run participants were significantly more likely than girls in organized sports to learn and use life skills such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others and making intentional decisions.*

Girls who were least active increased their physical activity level by 40% throughout the season and continued to be active even after completing the end-of-season 5K.*

*Results from a 2016 external study.
