Keep pests away from entertaining areas
OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING is one of the joys of nicer weather. People routinely gather on the patio or around the pool when the weather warms up, and such recreational activities can foster companionship and reduce
stress. However, if nuisance animals and insects are sharing entertaining spaces, these pests can quickly put a damper on the festivities. While it may seem impossible to keep an outdoor entertaining area completely pest-free, there are ways to keep such unwanted intrusions manageable.
Identify common pests Yard pests vary depending on geography, so the first step is to figure out which pests are native to your area. Mosquitoes can be found in many locales, but certain insects may be exclusive to specific regions. In addition to insects, squirrels, moles, raccoons, and other rodents may also descend on a property. Neighborhoods that abut natural ecosystems or infringe on wild animals’ habitats may see a wider array of animals encroaching on entertaining spaces. Deer, bears, coyotes, and certain bird species can present their own brands of trouble. Homeowners new to an area may have to experience a learning curve to determine which pests are common to a certain area, as well as which seasons bring which creatures.
Try natural repellents first To minimize damage to the environment and to protect local wildlife, homeowners should exhaust natural ways to repel pests before resorting to less eco-friendly methods. Animals can be kept out of a yard with fences and other barriers, such as thorny bushes. Many pests are deterred by smells or certain structures in a lawn or garden. For example, inserting chicken wire into a garden bed may be enough to repel burrowing animals. Certain insects, such as flies and mosquitoes, find the aromas of citronella grass, basil and marigold offensive. Surrounding a property with these plants can create a natural bug repellent. Lavender and rosemary are other aromatics that may deter pests. Blood meal and soap solutions can repel deer and other wildlife that may feed on garden plants. Pests attracted to food can be kept at bay with frequent sweeping or hosing down of the patio. In addition, maintain a clean grill and store trash in tightly secured receptacles.
Consider more traditional alternatives If natural repellents do not work, you may need to rely on more traditional products to repel insects and other pests. Beetle traps lure beetles with an inviting scent before the beetle gets trapped in a bag and cannot exit. Traps for wasps and flies follow a similar premise. Bug zappers are largely viewed as an inhumane option but can be highly effective. Unfortunately, these zappers also attract and kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies. Chemical repellents also are available. Stores stock pesticides that will rid plants of damaging insects. These repellents also may be used around the patio to make the area inhospitable to insects and other pests.
Contact an exterminator If the problem is simply too difficult to manage on your own, then you might need to contact an exterminator, who can spray the perimeter of the home for bugs and can also be called in to safely trap and remove nuisance animals. An exterminator may also have detailed knowledge of protected species and which habitats can and cannot be disturbed. —metro services

Four steps for attacking garage organization
ORGANIZING THE GARAGE may be one of the most feared tasks in household history. According to a recent Gladiator GarageWorks survey, nearly
three out of four households can only park one car in their two-car garage, illustrating the need for a serious garage intervention.
The importance of having a well-organized garage isn’t only for improved functionality—it also helps add overall value to a home. More than 80 percent of real estate brokers or agents recently surveyed said that a cluttered, unorganized garage can have a negative impact on a potential home buyer’s first impression.
Since the garage is often used as the “front door” to homes, having an untidy garage can be very unwelcoming. There are a few steps that can help homeowners prepare for the ultimate battle against clutter and reclaim their space in the garage:
1Clean and Prep Clutter is one of the
biggest issues with garage organization. The only way to know what is in the garage is to remove all of the items inside and start with a clean slate. As you remove items from the garage, be realistic about what you do and do not use and move them into categories
⊲ Keep items you use regularly.
⊲Donate or sell items that are still in good shape but aren’t being used regularly.
⊲ Toss items that are broken and that you don’t need.
2 Have a Game Plan First, measure the garage so you can make an accurate plan for storage solutions and
factor in large items, such as lawn mowers and sporting equipment. Next, decide how to group similar items and what your storage needs are. For example, do you prefer to hang items on hooks, store in baskets or be able to hide items in cabinets? Start exploring your options with design tools, such as the one at www.gladiatorgw.com, to finalize your plans.
3Build Your Storage System Use the walls in your garage to get gear off the floor and maximize
storage space by choosing storage solutions that are durable and long lasting. Stackable plastic storage bins or shelving units can sometimes reduce clutter, but they aren’t always built to handle extreme temperatures in the garage. They also provide limited design flexibility and access to items when you need them. “Consider a modular storage system for the walls—they get everything off the floor and allow you to customize so you can reclaim your space,” said Karl Champley, DIY expert and master builder. “These garage systems are convenient and easy to install giving you the ultimate wall storage solution for baskets, shelves, hooks and various other accessories. These systems are the perfect way to achieve the dream garage.”
4Add Final Touches Once you have stored large items in your garage, it’s time to add some
final touches to maximize efficiency and make your workspace functional.
⊲Keep a trash can nearby your work area so it stays free of garbage and debris.
⊲Hang tools near your workbench so you can easily put them back in their proper place.
⊲Utilize smaller bins and storage containers for screws, nails and other small items so they don’t clutter your space.
With these steps in mind, tackling a garage organization project should be much easier. To find additional organizational tips and ideas, visit www.gladiatorgw.com. Source: Gladiator Garage Works

LAWN MOWER TUNE-UPS. A WISE INVESTMENTInvesting 30 minutes on a spring tune-up for your lawn mower can pay dividends for years to come. Those who don’t perform this important basic maintenance before the weather turns warmer often end up putting their equipment at risk. The good news is that the engine experts at Briggs & Stratton are making it easier than ever before to get your lawn mower ready for spring—from tune-up kits to oil evacuation kits to a free oil recycling solution, you can keep your lawn mower running smoothly. An engine tune-up for your push mower takes only 30 minutes or less. Riding mower engines may require an oil filter or fuel filter, which could add five to 10 minutes to the job.
A Spring Tune-up Is Key“Homeowners simply want their lawn mower to start when they need it for that first cut of spring and a simple tune-up can make the difference between a hassle-free start and frustrating trips for service,” said Synoilva Shaw with the Briggs & Stratton Engine Marketing department. “While the source of most starting problems is old gasoline—which goes stale in about 30 days—a tune-up can help extend the life of the mower engine and keep it running at peak performance.”
Prepping A Push MowerA tune-up for a push mower engine can reduce engine emissions by as much as 30 percent and involves just four easy steps:1. Changing the mower oil2. Replacing the air filter3. Replacing the spark plug4. Adding fuel preservative to the gasoline.
Step-by-step video instructions are available online at www.briggsandstratton.com.
Tune-up KitsA basic push mower engine tune-up kit costs under $12.99 and includes an air filter, spark plug, bottle of oil and a pouch of fuel treatment and stabilizer. A tractor tune-up kit costs under $32.99 and includes the same as a push mower kit with the addition of a fuel and/or oil filter. The kits are available online at the company’s website or at authorized dealers and home improvement stores.
Oil Evacuation Kits Two options are available for oil evacuation kits—one that removes oil only and another that removes both oil and fuel. These kits help eliminate the need for consumers to
tip the mower to drain the oil during a tune-up, making it easier to change the oil and reducing the possibility of an oil spill in the garage or driveway. Oil evacuation kits cost be tween $23 and $31 and are available online at www.briggsand stratton.com or at authorized dealers and home improvement stores.
Disposing Of Used OilParticipating Briggs & Stratton dealers nationwide make recycling oil easy and have recycled more than 200,000 gallons of used engine oil to date. Simply drop off your used oil in a closed container and let your dealer take care of the rest.
Look Before You PumpCertain gasoline blends should never be used in lawn mower engines and other small gas en gines. Fuel blends containing more than 10 percent ethanol, like E15 or E85 gasoline, or gasoline containing other alcohol blends can damage small gas engines.
Repairs required because of the use of these unapproved gasoline blends are not covered under the manufacturer’s engine warranty. Look for the “Look Before You Pump” warning logo on new models or find more information from the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute at www.opei.org. —NAPS
Giving your lawn mower a tune-up each spring can help extend the life of its engine and keep it running at peak performance longer.

Proven Winners ColorChoice ShrubsShrubs are a key element for building good garden bones so it’s important to get their placement right. An out-of-place shrub is a lot like a misaligned nose on a face; it throws the whole picture off.One way we get the arrangement wrong is by selecting shrubs that are out of scale—either too large or too small. It’s a mistake that’s easy to avoid when you know the amount of space available, the role the plant will play in your garden’s design, and the mature size of the plant. First look at the dimensions of the space. Can it accommodate the 12 foot tall Chinese snowball viburnum you have your heart set on? Conversely will a dwarf shrub be dwarfed by the surroundings? Next decide the function of the shrub. Is it for screening, a focal point, foundation planting, or an element in a mixed border? The purpose will help determine the desired size.
Check List for Selecting Shrubs1. Cultural Requirements—Will it grow in your climate and growing conditions in your garden?2. Size—What is the mature height and width?3. Function—Are you in need of a screen, foundation planting, focal point or mixed border companion?
Screening What do you want to hide? Something tall like ‘American Pillar’ arborvitae (240—360 inches) is an excellent choice for blocking the view of the neighbor’s garage while medium-sized shrubs like boxwoods will hide an AC unit without making it difficult for repairmen to access. If you want to camouflage a chain link fence without hindering the view beyond try a mix of evergreen and deciduous shrubs that mature to the top of the fence.
Enclosure You can use shrubs to create living walls for garden rooms. Plant shrubs closely to create a hedge. Choose tall growing bushes such as arborvitae, camellia and holly for secluded rooms or something shorter for the illusion of enclosure.
Focal Point Every garden needs a statement maker to draw the eye. Shrubs offer blooms, foliage and berries for a seasonal focal point. A large shrub such as Snow Storm™ spiraea (36–48 in. tall ) will capture attention in spring with massive white fountains of blooms and again with orange and red fall foliage. For a
smaller space try planting a grouping of dwarf shrubs like Show Off™ Sugar Baby Forsythia for a solid drift of cheery yellow blooms. For winter interest in a garden with space
consider the tree-like deciduous holly Berry Nice® winterberry. The red berries are a knock out and the birds love them.
Foundation Planting When it comes to foundation plantings, choose shrubs that will accent your home rather than hide it. You can frame a house with tall shrubs at the corners and plant low growers such as White Album™ euonymous across the center.
Beware of planting shrubs beneath windows that will grow too tall and block the view. To keep it interesting use a mix of evergreens and deciduous shrubs or, if you choose all evergreens, contrast the leaf shapes and textures.
Mixed Border Companion Shrubs are a carefree way to jazz up bed of perennials and annuals. Placement in the border will determine what size shrub you need. Plant taller varieties in the back, medium in the middle and low growing in the front. Also consider the size of the border itself so your selection does not overpower its bedfellows. Lo & Behold® Blue Chip butterfly bush is a petite version of the popular butterfly bushp that is perfect for getting the blooms “front and center.” More stately specimens such as Bloomerang® Purple lilac or Incrediball® hydrangea are suited for the back of the border. Now that you know what size plant you need it’s just a matter of matching the right
size with shrubs that will thrive in your climate and growing conditions—sun, water, and soil. Next, select ornamental characteristics
that appeal to you and that suit the purpose of the shrub. Evergreen or deciduous? Flowers? Fruits? Fall foliage? Funnel down until you land on the perfect shrub for your space, environment and purpose. So you see, when it comes to shrubs, size does matter. By determining the right size shrub first, you’ll ensure that your choice will enhance the framework of your garden.By P. Allen Smith / Proven Winners previously published on ProvenWinners.com
