Marois PostscriptDespite a third-place effort as the favorite in Sunday’s G1 Prix Jacques le

Marois at Deauville, Intello (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}) still remains firmly in thepicture for the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October, trainer AndreFabre confirmed Monday. Meanwhile, Godolphin’s Dawn Approach (Ire)(New Approach {Ire}), a disappointing fifth, scoped dirty following the raceand is now undergoing anti-biotic treatment.

Indy Point, who won=t celebrate his actual fourthbirthday until Sept. 2, has never finished outside of thetop three in any of his 13 career trips to the post.Upset winner of the G1 Estrellas Juvenile to close out

his freshman season inJune 2012, the athleticchestnut just missed in theG1 Polla de Potrillos (2000Guineas), but bouncedback to win back-to-backGroup 1s, including theDerby Nacional on themain track last November. He took on his elders in theG1 Gran Premio Carlos

Pellegrini back on the turf at San Isidro Dec. 15 andwas gaining late, but settled for the place spot inArgentina=s most prestigious race (video). AI got a call from John Fulton, representing theowner,@ Mandella said, explaining the chain of eventsthat led to Indy Point coming to California. AIt was anice surprising call. He told me about the horse andasked me if I=d be interested in training him for theowner. It took me about a half a second to say yes.@ Indy Point first hit the worktab in early March, butthe conditioner elected to give the colt plenty of time toacclimate before taking the wraps off the colt in therestricted Wickerr S. going a mile over the Del Mar turfcourse July 24.

A touch headstrong while in midpack early on, hecame out in the lane and pulled away to score withauthority by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:32.74 (video). AHe trains like he=d be a very good miler,@ Mandellastated. AI think he went further in Argentina, becausethat=s where the big races were. When you come backand run a mile like that in [a minute] :32 and changefirst time out, you have to be pretty fast.@ Having excelled at distances up to 2500 meters inArgentina and given the timing of the race, Indy Pointwas at one time a candidate for the GI Pacific ClassicAug. 25, but the decision to come to Chicago was aneasy one, says Mandella. AWhen I ran him here the other day, he looked sogood,@ he commented. AI saw the Pacific Classiccoming up on the main track and the Arlington Millionon the grass. I wasn=t smart enough to do any fancymultiplication--I just did two and two.@ In preparation for Saturday=s race, Indy Point workedstrongly over the Del Mar Poly this past Saturday. AHe worked really well, went a mile in 1:39.60 andgalloped out a mile and an eighth in 1:53,@ Mandellaexplained. AI was very happy with it, just looking to putsome wind in him. He just ran a good mile race, so itwas more maintenance than anything else.@ Asked to compare this colt with the likes of dualMillion runner-up Sandpit (Brz) and The Tin Man,Mandella had a typically understated and blunt answer. ATo me, they=re as different as people. The likeness isthat they can run. They=re good athletes and they havegood temperaments and he=s got all those things.@ -ALC

At the Anniversary Games in London last month, MoFarah, the Olympic champion at 5,000 and 10,000meters, challenged Usain Bolt, the world record holderat 100 and 200 meters, to a charity race over 600 or800 meters. A possible clash between these titans ofthe track created plenty ofspeculation, with manypredicting that Farah=s stamina would trump Bolt=sspeed.

The connections of Intello no doubt hoped that hisstamina would also prove decisive when this impressivewinner of the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club tackled the veryspeedy Moonlight Cloud inSunday=s G1 Prix Jacques leMarois--especially when therewas reason for thinking thatthe distance of a mile wasn=tabsolutely ideal for either ofthem. After all, GeorgeStrawbridge=s mare had gainednine of her 10 previoussuccesses over six and a half orseven furlongs. She had alsogone very close to defeating the brilliant Australianmare Black Caviar over six furlongs at Royal Ascot. It had been a different story over a mile for thisdaughter of the sprinter Invincible Spirit. MoonlightCloud had been successful in only one of her fourprevious attempts at the longer trip, when she scrapedhome at odds-on in last year=s G1 Prix du Moulin. Andshe had finished only fourth in last year=s Jacques leMarois. The presence of several pacemakers threatened toexpose any lack of stamina in Moonlight Cloud, butthey collectively failed to blunt her ability to quicken inthe final stages. Intello, on the other hand, just lackedthe necessary pace in the final 100 meters, but stillachieved an honorable third, which will surely add tohis appeal as a stallion. Cont. p5

With seven Northern Hemisphere Group 1 winners tohis credit, including GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile winnerVale of York, it is easy to forget that Invincible Spiritstarted his stallion career at a very different level to hiscurrent position. Although he stood the latest season ati65,000 (and the 2008 season at i75,000), his firstfour crops were all sired at only i10,000. His excellentfirst-season results led to his fee rising to i35,000 in2007, the year that Moonlight Cloud was conceived. Invincible Spirit=s finest moment on the track camewhen he emulated his sire Green Desert by winning theG1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. However, his pedigreewasn=t that of a one-dimensional sprinter. His damRafha was a G1 Prix de Diane winner from a familywith endless stamina, so I expected him to sire somequality winners at a mile and a quarter or more, givensome help from his mares. He has duly done so, withLawman, his very promising stallion son, staying wellenough to land the Prix du Jockey-Club. Lawman hasbeen followed by such as Ektihaam, Allied Powers,Speaking of Which and G1 Irish Derby second Born ToRun.

However, there is no escaping the fact that speed--often precocious speed--has been the main virtue ofInvincible Spirit=s progeny. Moonlight Cloud hasunderlined this with her trio of victories in the G1 PrixMaurice de Gheest, and he has also sired two winnersof the G1 July Cup (Fleeting Spirit and Mayson) andtwo of the G1 Cheveley Park S. (Hooray and RosdhuQueen). His lengthy list of group winners also includes14 others who gained all their victories over five or sixfurlongs. For the record these are Captain Marvelous,Our Jonathan, Conquest, Madame Trop Vite, Zebedee,Swiss Spirit, Spirit Quartz, Glamorous Spirit, Age ofChivalry, Lockwood, Beyond Desire, Tickled Pink,Invincible Ash and Charming Woman. Andrew Caulfield cont.

Moonlight Cloud=s owner must be torn betweenwanting to keep his great mare in training and thedesire to start her broodmare career as quickly aspossible. She has the attraction of having the blue-henDoff the Derby as her third dam. Doff the Derby in turnwas a daughter of the similarly celebrated Margarethen, who also produced the outstanding Trillion, dam of theextraordinary Triptych. Margarethen=s name has alsocropped up this year as the fifth dam of Treve, theexciting winner of the Prix de Diane. Doff the Derby earned her blue-hen status byproducing a pair of dual Classic winners in Generous(Derby and Irish Derby) and Imagine (Irish 1000 Guineasand Epsom Oaks), plus four other stakes winners. Oneof them, Wedding Bouquet, is the second dam ofMoonlight Cloud. Wedding Bouquet was a 3/4-sister toGenerous, as both were by sons of Nijinsky. However,Wedding Bouquet=s sire Kings Lake was much speedierthan Generous= sire Caerleon and Wedding Bouquet wasfast enough to win the GIII Monrovia H. over 6 1/2furlongs. She had earlier been placed in the G1 PhoenixS. and G1 National S. at two, when she also scoredthree times. Moonlight Cloud=s dam Ventura resulted fromWedding Bouquet=s visit to Rainbow Quest=s sonSpectrum. This was a likeable match, as RainbowQuest had done very well with daughters andgrand-daughters of Nijinsky, once siring a French 2000Guineas second from a Kings Lake mare. Spectrum was very good on his day, as he showed inwinning the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the ChampionS., but his sale to South Africa in 2004 reflects the factthat he hadn=t developed into the excellent outcrossstallion that Coolmore no doubt had in mind when theybought him. He had his moments, though, notablysiring Golan (G1 2000 Guineas and G1 King George)and Gamut (G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud), as well asTartan Bearer. This narrow loser of the 2008 Derby wasout of a mare by Generous, so had a pedigree quitesimilar to that of Moonlight Cloud=s dam Ventura.

A listed-placed winner over a mile, Ventura was soldfor 500,000gns at the end of her racing career. Herprice dropped to 58,000gns by the time Strawbridgesold her in 2009. Then along came the 2-year-oldMoonlight Cloud to restore Ventura=s price to260,000gns a year later. Moonlight Cloud=s Group 1victory at three prompted another visit to the sales ringin 2011, when Ventura sold for 900,000gns to M.V.Magnier. She has a yearling filly by Makfi and is now infoal to Galileo, who sired her other stakes winner, thestayer Cedar Mountain. Incidentally, Galileo yet againhad a magnificent time last week, including with his2-year-olds. Ventura=s half-sister Maddelina now ranks as thesecond dam of the group-winning middle-distancestayer Hawaafez, while another half-sister, WeddingMorn, produced the 2012 2-year-old Group 2 winnerProbably. Moonlight Cloud is by no means the Margarethenfamily=s first Group 1 winner from the Danzig male line,as it also scored at the top level with Danehill=s sonsLandseer (French 2000 Guineas and Keeneland TurfMile) and Horatio Nelson (Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere), aswell as with Green Desert=s son Tamarisk (Sprint Cup atHaydock).

Corfu, Danza Possible for Hopeful... Stablemates Corfu (Malibu Moon) and Danza (StreetBoss), first and third, respectively, in Sunday=s GII Saratoga Special S., have both emerged from their

efforts none the worse forwear and will receiveconsideration for the GI Hopeful S. on closingweekend of the Saratogameeting Sept. 2, trainerTodd Pletcher confirmedMonday. "[Corfu] hasshown that he's very fastand he's got some courageto go along with it,"Pletcher said of the$675,000 Barretts March

sales-topper. "I was once again surprised at how wellhe bounced out of what seemed like a demanding race.I think [Danza] definitely got lost in the shuffle, becauseone more stride and it's going to be a three-horsephoto."

Pletcher was represented by three other winners onthe Sunday program, none more impressive thanJ “TDN Rising Star” J Sweet Whiskey (OldFashioned). The Alto Racing runner, a $300,000 OBSMarch graduate, wired a field of maidens by 5 1/4lengths Sunday afternoon, stopping the clock in1:02.81, just 0.30 of a second off the track record."She'd been training really well and had breezed incompany with a couple of other fillies that had alreadyrun well at the meet, so we anticipated she would runwell," Pletcher said. "It was nice to see her do it."Sweet Whiskey is a candidate for the GI Spinaway S.Sept. 1, while the barn=s other maiden winner, We MissArtie (Artie Schiller) could go next in the GII WithAnticipation S. Aug. 29 following a three-lengthgraduation in his turf debut. In other news from thePletcher stable, Authenticity (Quiet American), winnerof the GIII Shuvee H. Aug. 25, while champion Shanghai Bobby (Harlan=sHoliday) was pronounced ahead of schedule after goinga half-mile in :49.62. She’s Got Legs, And Knew How To Use Them... One day after being put up to the victory in the GII Adirondack S. at Saratoga, Designer Legs (GraemeHall) was visited in her stall by owner Murray Valene.Despite the rough nature of the race, the filly seems tohave come through with no serious problems. "Murrayknows her really well, and he said, 'She's a fighter,'and she is. She fought really hard," trainer DallasStewart said. "It was a tough race. She got banged alittle bit, but thank God she came back good. She's gotone little minor scratch, but she looks good. As hard asit is to win, we got lucky." She will also receiveconsideration for the Spinaway in just over threeweeks. "We would love to," he said, referring to a runin the seven-furlong test. "We'll just train her up to therace, and, if everything's right on, we'll do it." Stewart, who has Golden Soul (Perfect Soul {Ire}) pointingtowards the GI Travers S. Aug. 24, said that PerfectTitle (Perfect Soul {Ire}), a last-out seventh in the GIIJim Dandy S. July 27, will be out of action for two tothree months after surgery to repair a leg injurysuffered in his first post-race breeze. "He's back in hisstall here," Stewart said. "We had to put a couple ofscrews in the cannon bone. He worked excellent; it wasjust one of those things. He'll go to the farm in a coupleof days, when he's good enough to travel. He'll be outa few months, for sure, so we'll have time to figure itout." The stable will also have Irish Lute (Midnight Lute)in the GI Prioress S. on the Travers undercard.

Guillot In Fine Form at the Spa... Trainer Eric Guillot is quick with a line and detailed hisTravers plans for Southern Equine Stables= Moreno(Ghostzapper) after watching the gelding zip sixfurlongs in 1:12.01 over the Oklahoma training trackSunday morning. "He finished like a freight train, galloped out in 1:24 2/5," he said. "He's like smokedham--always ready. Put it on the dashboard, put it onthe counter, put it in the trunk of your car--smoked hamis always ready." Guillot has all but assured thatMoreno will be the pacesetter in the Travers, evenjoking that he would apply Abear grease@ to the horse=stail. "Todd needs to acclimate Palace Malice andVerrazano to bear," Guillot said. "He needs to go to thezoo and acclimate his horse for bear, because when Ipaint that bear grease in Moreno's tail and get on thelead, the horse is in fear of the bear. They have bears inthe New York zoo, right?"

"We gothere and turned him out in the round pen at 5:30 thismorning, and he was jumping and playing," McGaugheysaid. "I think his energy level is back to where we wantit," McGaughey said. "We fed him last night, and heate up in 20 minutes. We didn't feed him full feed, obviously, but he'll be on it tonight. He didn't look at itand go back to the corner by any means." The Hall ofFame conditioner has a schedule mapped out for thenext 11 days. "I'll gallop him through the week, and I'llbreeze him a half-mile on Monday, which we have doneall the time," McGaughey said. "I think I blew him outSunday before the Belmont. NEW PURSE MINIMUMS FOR GI, GII RACES TheThoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association=sAmerican Graded Stakes Committee (AGSC) hasannounced new thresholds for purses in Grade I andGrade II races beginning in 2014. Minimum purse levelswill be raised $50,000 for each grade, meaning that inorder for a race to have Grade I status, the minimumpurse will now be $300,000. Grade II events mustcarry purse money of at least $200,000. Mimimumpurse levels for Grade III, listed and grade-eligible stakeswill remain at $100,000, $75,000 and $75,000,respectively, for 2014. AThere had been no raise in thepurse minimum for graded stakes for several years andthe committee felt it was important to have higherpurses for our top tier races,@ said Dr. J. DavidRichardson, chairman of the AGSC. AMany non-stakesraces now have purses comparable to graded races andwe believe our best races should be set apart from therest. With the declining foal crops we may see amovement toward somewhat fewer but more valuablegraded races.@ The AGSC intends on increasing theminimum purse level on U.S. Grade III races to$150,000 in 2015. Listed and grade eligible races willundergo an analysis to determine if any change shouldbe made for 2015.

A # will distinguish first-time stakes-winners, a @ willindicate first-time graded stakes-winners, a s willdenote a first-time Grade/Group 1 winner, a + willindicate first-time starters, an (S) will be used for state-bred races, a (C) will be used for maiden-claiming racesand an (R) will be used for other restricted races.

PASTORIUS INJURED Triple Group 1 winner Pastorius (Ger) (Soldier Hollow{GB}) suffered a fracture to his cannon bone in aworkout yesterday, the Racing Post revealed. Last seenfinishing sixth of seven in the G1 Eclipse S. at SandownJuly 6, the 4-year-old was being aimed at the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden, G1 Prix de l=Arc deTriomphe and G1 Champion S. before injury struck.Successful in last year=s G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis, he had added the G1 PrixGanay to his tally at Longchamp in April, and it ishoped that he will find a place at stud when he hasrecovered. Trainer Mario Hofer told the trade daily, AAdecision will be made on his future when he comes outof plaster in October. It is obviously very disappointing,as he had a major autumn campaign planned, but that'snow out of the question.@ In total, Stall Antanando=sflag-bearer won six of his 14 starts and almosti750,000 in prize money.

Stakes-placed as a maiden at two, the 4-year-old filly graduated in her first attempt on thegrass last July and took a Woodbine allowance inOctober before finishing a deceptively good fourth toCentre Court (Smart Strike) in the GII Mrs. Revere S. atChurchill Downs Nov. 17. AIntello ran as I expected him to and I have nocomplaints,@ Fabre reflected. AAt the end of the day, hewas beaten by two top-class milers and it was a fairrace run in a very good time. He will step back up intrip and runs next in the [10-furlong G3] Prix du Princed=Orange at Longchamp [Sept. 21]. After that he willeither run in the Arc or the [G1] Champion [S. at AscotOct. 19], but it will more likely be the Arc I think.@
