An evening devoted to film anddiscussion on feminist activism. A seriesof short films on inspiring women's rightsactivism around the world, followed by apanel discussion with feminist activists.The discussion will focus on forms ofactivism, current campaigns, how to startyour own campaign, with plenty of timefor audience participation.

30% ­ (Women and Politics in SierraLeone) ­ Incorporating oil paintedanimation this film tells the stories ofBernadette Lahai, Barbara Bangura, andSalamatu Kamara who are fighting for therights of women to play a role in thegovernance of Sierra Leone. The filmtackles issues of violence and the use ofsexuality to prevent women playing majorroles in society and touches on the role ofsecret societies in restricting women'sfreedom.

The Campaigner ­ 78 year old Joycewho refuses to go along with the quiet,conformist role society approves of forolder women. Joyce is fearless in facingup to the injustice she sees in the world,and wishes more of us were too.

Six Days – A universal story of women'scourage and survival in the aftermath ofwar. Six Days follows Lanja, Nelly, andMaia – three brave women who fight forwomen's rights in three war­tornsocieties. Lanja is a journalist in theKurdistan Region of Iraq who despiteconstant death threats gives a voice towomen who are victims of honour­basedviolence. Nelly works in the slums ofMonrovia (Liberia) where she empowerswomen through education. And finallyMaia works for women's health andsexual rights and fights archaic customslike 'bride kidnapping' in villages in thebreakaway region of Abkhazia (Georgia).

Hair Peace looks at how one woman’ssituation through birthplace; class andreligion can be so radically different yetstill be so inextricably linked by havingworn the same hair. It all started whenVictoria was transforming into a beautyqueen for her previous show Major Tom,a hairdresser told her that to make it as abeauty queen she needed hairextensions. Struck by the lack ofquestions asked about the origins of hairextensions given that they are at theirpeak ­ last year 38 million pounds worthof human hair entered the country andthe UK are the 3rd biggest importer in theWorld, Victoria decided to ask thequestion: ‘where do they come from?’

Through the show Victoria traces her hairextensions trying to find the people thatgrew them and get to the bottom of theindustry. She charts her journey to Indiaand to Russia introducing the audienceto the people she meets, the factories shevisited, sharing what she discoveredalong the way.

Desiree Burch is a Fringe First­winningwriter and solo performance artist. Afounding member of the New York Neo­Futurists who present the weekly show'Too Much Light Makes the Baby GoBlind', Desiree specialises in directaddress performances that put personalexperiences into a global perspective. Asa comic on the US and UK circuits (2015Funny Women Stage Award­winner),Desiree brings provocative humour andsubtle (and not so subtle) forms ofaudience participation into hermonologues to enrich the emotional andintellectual journey of her audiences.

In this 90­minute workshop, participantswill use self­generated and found text tohome in on their voice, perspective andand audience in presenting originalperformance work. Incorporating gesture,sound and physicality, participants willempower their narratives with structureand substance. This workshop is forbeginning and developing solo anddevised performers who want to discoverand enliven their stories. Black and Lesbian? Deaf and disabled?Young and Muslim? Lots of women findthat aspects of their lived experiencemean that they can feel isolated even inwomen’s spaces. In this workshop we willexplore the concept of intersectionalityand how it affects the way we can relateto feminism. We will look at how theissues we face as women differaccording to race, age, disability, religionand class. So often the differencesbetween women are highlighted andthen used to divide us and keep us apart;undermining the strength of ourmovement. We will use the space toidentify common ground and find ways ofbuilding alliances across theintersections. The film shows ten portraitsof women ­ Arabs and Jews at the hair­washing sink, speaking with curious Irisabout politics, history, life and love,representing contrasting voices of Israelisociety.

The group also facilitatesupdates to medical, therapeutic andholistic research and information bothlocally and nationally. This Wow Bitewelcomes women, their friends, familyand partners to come along and hearhow, sometimes, the smallest piece ofinformation can be the thing that makesthe greatest difference and help womento help each other, not to feel isolatedand alone but instead heard, listened to,understood, connected and empowered.What 'woman' do you see when yousearch the internet? Who does yourphone and search engine think you wantto see?

As the personalisation of search and filteralgorithms increase; what and who youget to see maybe very different to theperson who is on their phone standingright next to you. Liv would love to seethe women that you see via your smartphone and have a chat about yourrelationship with your image and howyou choose to share. Liv Pennington isan Artist based in Folkestone andcurrently undertaking a PhD at theUniversity of Creative Arts. Her researchproject looks at the impact of the digitalon women's visibility and asks how canyou reject an image if you can't delete it.The information gathered will form thebasis for a piece of artwork to be realisedin time for WOW 2017.
