About the Course: Behavioural problems following a brain injury can cause much stress and anxiety not just to the family members but also for people working with them. These behaviours can greatly interfere with their ability to reintegrate back into society as an individual. Some of the common behavioural problems of individuals with brain injury include not being able to control their temper, socially inappropriate behaviours, restlessness and agitation. It is important for health care providers to understand that they are not deliberately misbehaving. Knowing this and learning how to handle the challenges can help lessen your concern and anxiety when interacting with them as well as empowering family members to learn to cope with their behaviours when they return home. Duration: 1-day Workshop Target Audience: Doctors, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals who treat patients with acute brain injury in hospitals, community settings and rehabilitation units Fees: SAOT members: $200; Non-members: $250 Early Bird: $230; TTSH Staff: $160

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are common at the workp lace . Phys io therap is ts o f ten t rea t such musculoskeletal disorders. However, our patients’ progress with physiotherapy interventions is often hindered and their musculoskeletal disorders or injuries keep recurring due to poor workplace ergonomics, be it in the patients’ workstation, work environment or job design. Having proper workplace ergonomics helps reduce the risk of patients re-injuring themselves at work. It also serves as a prevention for other forms of injuries at the workplace. You will be taught the different risk factors that may lead to work-related musculoskeletal disorders. You will also learn how to evaluate the ergonomics risks at your patients’ work place using ergonomic evaluation tools, which will aid in the holistic treatment of such patients. About the Course: With the rise in the prevalence of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart and renal diseases, effective nutrition intervention strategies are fundamental in the management of these conditions. Nutrition counselling and nutrition education are different intervention strategies. Nutrition counselling involves analyzing nutrition information, the individual’s motivations and barriers, as well as setting priorities, goals and creating individualised action plans. Through appropriate counselling and intervention, dietitians play a vital role in motivating patients to make and sustain diet-related behaviour changes. The techniques and theories involved in nutrition counselling focus on the patients and tailor strategies to their needs. This Nutrition Counselling Workshop aims to: a) Provide an understanding to the evidence-based application of Motivational Interviewing and nutrition counselling in enhancing dietary counselling. b) Enhance the dietitian's ability to use the client-centered counselling skills to motivate dietary changes in patients. c) Strengthen the Dietitian’s use of nutrition counselling skills as part of the Nutrition Care Process to provide more effective patient care. Duration: 1.5-day Workshop Target Audience: Dietitians Fees: $350

Speakers: Dr Linda Snetselaar Professor (Department of Epidemiology, College of Public Health & secondary faculty in Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine College of Medicine, University of Iowa) RD, PhD, LD

Assessments and Intervention for Low Vision in the Elderly: An Introduction Course 20 MARCH 2013

About the Course: Vision is a complex function which plays a crucial role in our daily occupational performance. It is essential for us to interact with the environment, make decisions and anticipate changes. As the elderly population increases, the incidence of age related eye conditions will also increase. these eye conditions may cause low vision in the elderly, which affects their daily functioning and leads to consequences such as falls and a loss of independence. In this course, visual assessments will be introduced to assess different visual components. Intervention strategies will be taught to facilitate the elderly to use their remaining vision, assistive devices and modify their environment to optimise visual functioning. Duration: 1-day Workshop Target Audience: Occupational Therapists working with elderly Fees: SAOT Members: $270; Non-members: $300

Y Distal Radius Fracture Workshop for Occupational Therapists: Assessment and Management 23 MAY 2013

About the Course: Distal radius fractures generally occur secondary to falls. In the community ambulant elderly, low energy fractures such as from accidental fall are seen more commonly. Hence, it is anticipated that the incidence of distal radius fractures will increase as Singapore population ages. High energy fractures can also occur from sports, industrial accidents or road traffic accidents in younger populations. It is important that individuals undergo wrist rehabilitation after distal radius fracture to restore the load bearing and stabilization function of the wrist to enable optimal hand and upper limb function. This workshop aims to present participants with summary of anatomical features of the wrist, distal radius fractures characteristics and common surgical/non-surgical management. Clinical information pertaining to evaluation and rehabilitation will be provided, with fabrication of wrist immobilization/resting and corrective splints in hands-on splinting session. About the Course: Healthcare workers in the intermediate and long term care services are frequently involved in the physical handling of patients. Patient handling activities refers to lifting, repositioning and transferring activities, which requires the caregiver to exert force to hold and support the patient. With the rapid increase in the aging population and growing demand to provide care for our frail elderly with high care needs, the healthcare industry needs to better prepare and support our healthcare workers to be competent in patient handling. Improved patient handling skills of our healthcare workers can reduce injury at work and enhance patient care. Participants will be able to practice and demonstrate safe patient handling techniques when moving or repositioning patients in bed or in chair to facilitate daily activities. Participants will also learn about proper positioning and simple ranging exercises in bed to prevent joint contractures of immobile patients. An Interprofessional Approach to Optimizing Nutrition in Adult and Geriatric Patients NOVEMBER 2013

About the Course: Optimal nutrition support is an integral part for holistic management for all patients. This is important because suboptimal nutrient delivery may result in patients being malnourished or be at risk of malnutrition which can impact on a myriad of patient outcomes such as response to medical treatment, rate of recovery, quality of life, as well as rates of morbidity and mortality. Providing optimal nutrition support will require an interprofessional collaborative approach with vital members of a multidisciplinary team for effective implementation. Therefore this will be incorporated throughout the workshop to help participants have an understanding of how this can be translated into practice with good communication and clear understanding of the roles of different healthcare professionals involved. This 2 day workshop aims to provide basic knowledge on various topics such as nutrition screening and monitoring, factors affecting nutrition requirements, and with a focus on nutritional aspects of enteral feeding and nutrition support strategies. A segment focusing on geriatric nutrition is also included due to the increasing demands of the current patient profile as Singapore is facing a situation of an ageing population. In this segment, nutritional issues specific to geriatric patients such as nutritional issues in dementia will be discussed in depth.
