safeTy Trainings for aspiring firefighTers in The WorkplaceTsuneishi Heavy Industries

(Cebu), Inc. (THICI)-Safety Team spearheaded

a firefighting activity to 40 employees including subcontractor workers as part of the simulation on Firewatcher’s training for aspiring firefighters in the workplace.

The training was divided into two sessions. The first session includes an orientation and discussion on appropriate fire emergency responses and handling. The second part is the actual drill that includes the proper handling of fire extinguishers and fire hoses.

Prior to the actual firefighting drill with the participants, in cooperation with the THICI Emergency Response Team-Fire Brigade Members, a demonstration is conducted to guide them on the procedures and techniques on how to extinguish fire.

Conducted six times annually, the activity aims to enhance the capability of the workers on how to properly handle the firefighting equipments such as fire hose and fire extinguisher, to educate and understand threats caused by fire and the action required to be taken to prevent it, and to check the ability of members to

perform the operations and to carry out with the firefighting equipment provided. The ultimate purpose of this training is to save life and property.

THICI President Hitoshi Kono stresses the importance of Safety First. He also added that in the shipbuilding business, it is important to understand the risks involved and the measures needed to ensure safety in the workplace.

Safety Inspector Vic Terrence Completo said that one of the team’s annual plan is to conduct an emergency

evacuation drill for both subcontractors and THI employees scheduled to be conducted on the 3rd week of May and 2nd week of October. This will include rescue and immediate first aid treatment training. “Anyone can attend the training as long as they are interested to learn and can respond to any fire emergencies inside the shipyard. All participants that have completed the two days fire brigade training will also be qualified as firewatchers. After the training, they will be deployed to the field and

to function as firewatchers on the critical activities on site”, he added. Fire brigade teams and firewatchers will also have follow-up trainings especially on the proper handling of fire extinguishers and fire hoses.

To date, THICI has 117 authorized firefighters and 431 authorized firewatchers.

recently, the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. (THICI)

welcomed three (3) Japanese interns from Nagaoka National College of Technology, Sendai National College of Technology, and Numazu National College of Technology for a 15-day internship training on shipbuilding production and processes.

The THICI shipbuilding module encompasses safety seminar, welding, planning & steel processing works, block fabrication, and hull erection works for the first week. Interns also learned the

works of the Inspection and Quality Control Department as well as all the electrical and machineries of a vessel.

20-year old Ryota Nakano, one of the interns said that through this internship he was able to practice conversing in English with Filipino engineers, workers and staffs. He added that THICI has a big impact to the community because of its support and contribution especially generating jobs for Filipino people.

Each THICI group front liners put their best foot forward in order to provide the interns a

quality education about shipbuilding, and imparting to them not just the know-how but the full experience of shipbuilders.

Kosuke Murakami, 20 years old took the internship to acquire international communication skills and to see how his major/course on Information and Communication Engineering apply in the shipbuilding industry. “I want to impart to my colleagues about how to build a ship and my experiences during holidays in Cebu”, he said.

The interns also get to see the different places in Cebu during weekends. THICI makes sure that the interns have fun such as going to the different places in Cebu and go diving, shopping and most especially experience

Filipino cuisine. “I think sisig with rice is the best”, said Kosuke. Ryota seconded and said he also likes chicken lechon.

The last five days made the interns busy in reviewing and preparing for their presentations/reports. He presented a heat stroke detector wristband (wireless sensor), where it can measure the temperature, blood pressure, and the location of a person, and sends data to the clinic. This device helps when an accident happens and shortens search/rescue time thus increasing work efficiency. On the other hand, Yuji Tomioka introduced his studies in their school laboratory on echography support system and cooperative motion analysis.

Association (PTA) of Buanoy Central School signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the completion of the 1-classroom building of Buanoy Central School on May 21, 2014.

“We aim to have a brighter future and that one day we’ll be part of the THICI family. You serve as an inspiration to be successful in life. One of these days, we will be in front of you again saying thank you, and we’re going to be forever thankful to each of you. To my co-scholars, our best days are still ahead of us. We must carry on and take extra effort so that our endeavors will be successful.”

“I got caught with this meaningful statement from a Chinese philosopher, ‘Only by a certain sense of purpose can we accomplish anything in the world. Without a sense of purpose, we are directionless as a ship without a rudder or a horse without race.’ In actuality, encountering problems seems normal as we move forward. This will hone our positive thinking skills, and empower our characters when we take our stepping stones to the road for greatness. It is just a matter of how we courageously bounce back when problems stand to knock us down. Personally, I have been through life’s difficulties that had almost dragged me to the other way. But I always thank God for the goodness of giving me that sense of purpose to serve as my driving force to the direction of where I want to be. Likewise, I thank Him for my ever supportive family, who has been my greatest inspiration in all my undertakings.

accomplish the project due to lack of funds”, said BCS-PTA President Ruth Tagpuno. “We are very happy that TFCI is here to help us realize this project”, she added.

TFCI’s part of this project is to continue the construction

of the classroom, and equip it with the necessary furnitures such as tables, chairs, blackboard, and the like.

“We are expecting an increase in student population of approximately 150 students this upcoming school year.

We will be needing more classrooms to accommodate”, said BCS School Head Eli Carmelotes.

The project will start on May and will be completed on July.

The scholarship that I am enjoying right now is indeed one of the best birthday presents I received in my entire life. I must say that these challenges and experiences I have gone through made me a more capable person, developed my resiliency, and God has utilized these to bless me with a strong character, and helped me acknowledge that constant change is a part of life.”

jHANINE mAE SENARlO, BSCE GRADUATE “The first time I set foot in THICI was when I was given the scholarship grant. Looking back brings a waive of nostalgic happiness and fulfillment. Without Tsuneishi I would not have gone this far or perhaps I would not have graduated yet. Prayers, have helped me finish my college degree and led me to the right path and overcome all challenges. I will really work hard in order for me to achieve my dreams.”

jOSE mARIE ANTEpASADO, BSmE GRADUATE “At an early age I am already aware of our family situation. From then I knew that finishing my education was the only way to make our family’s situation better. The scholarship grant that TFCI offered me came at a time when I needed it the the most. As soon as I received my scholarship grant, I immediately set my goals and wasted no time to use the opportunity that was given to me. Finally, I have graduated with a degree on Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I would not have gone this far without Tsuneishi Foundation. They have not just supported me financially but provided opportunities to help me get ready for my job. For that, me and my parents extend our heartfelt gratitude to the foundation and the people behind it. I look forward to working in your company soon. More power and God bless to the Tsuneishi Foundation and the company itself.
