Harriet Gunawasdana, who works a beach seller in Hikkaduwa selling goods to Western tourists. In 2007, when i revisited Sri Lanka it was a tough year for Har-riet, following renewed Tamil activity in Sri Lankan tourist numbers had dropped off significantly. Hopefully now the political situation is more settled in 2009 this winter will see tourist numbers return to higher levels and give the local economy a much needed boost.

An express train was travelling along the Galle-Colombo route when the Tsunami struck leaving 1500 passengers trapped inside. The train remains in Peraliya two years on from the Tsunami and has become a memorial and place of pilgrimage for many. However the surviving villagers have to live constantly in its sight. Here a young child walks next to the wreckage, Jan 2006.
