For some people balancing work and relationships is so easy to do but for some, it is a struggle. What is it that they do wrong? Could it be that they are investing much time on one aspect and fail to make time for the other? That is reason enough, but maybe there is something else that they do wrong. Let us try to get to the bottom of this.

How is your work? How is your love life? Has he or she been complaining about you staying up at night working or spending time away from the bedroom and in the boardroom? Has that been the argument lately? Take some time out and think about what has been the problem. Take your mind back and analyse the past few weeks to see where you went wrong. Maybe he or she is right; all your atten-tion is on your work and not on your lover.Sometimes you have long chats at work with your colleagues and think, “oh, I’ll do the remaining work when I get home.” Did you for a second think of your kids and partner who need your undivided time when you get home? We can’t blame them for complaining because if you had tried to push your work while still at the oce trouble could have been avoided. Those heavy les you have to work on could have been attended to while still at work. The problem starts to arise when we forget our roles when we get home, when we start to change our homes into a workplace, when we start making calls at night that could be made when we get to work in the morning, when we start talking too much about our workloads and forget to set a date for a trip to the ZOO to get our minds o things and when we start making our partners feel unimportant. Who does not want a promotion? No one! Growing up we were told that if we want something so badly we must work

hard. Maybe you were also told, “Work like a slave to live like a queen or king”. Ok that is true, but does it mean you have to let your profession become your obsession just because you want a promotion? Let’s do some correc-tions there—life is not only about work! There are some other aspects that complete us.One on my favourite authors, Andrew Sekhu once said in his motivational talks, “Success is about keeping a balance between work, family, social life, health and career.” It is so true though some people have dierent meanings of what success is. As humans we need to be sound in mind and look at other things in life that matter, not just one aspect. People we love must not only get our attention when we are free. Is that love? Will there be enough time to bond and feel the connection? Don’t let your work make you forget the smile on your lover’s face. Don’t let your work steal all your time and forget that you have someone to go home to. Start to include them in your list of important things. When you diarise important dates for meetings with business people or colleagues remember that in life there is time for family and time to love, not just time to make money. Money helps pay the bills and pay for family vacations too, shouldn’t we start planning for that next trip-away from the les and colleagues?
