DESCRIPTION
Nigeria’s first national Newborn Health Conference was held on October 23 and 24 in the capital, Abuja. The conference defined the country’s next steps for reducing newborn deaths. Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan provided opening remarks. Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) organized the conference and the country’s development partners, including JSI, supported it. After reviewing the progress of newborn health programming over the previous two decades, conference participants identified the most promising and scalable interventions for reducing newborn deaths. JSI’s Targeted States High Impact Project (TSHIP) is a key FMoH partner in the race to save newborn lives. JSI facilitated the attendance of key state officials and the Sultan of Sokoto and support the dissemination of conference information via social media. TSHIP gave several presentations at the conference and rapporteured a panel discussion on antenatal corticosteroids. The project also shared its influential documentary film about providing the lifesaving drug pair chlorhexidine and misoprostol to newborns and mothers across Nigeria.TRANSCRIPT
