The expo’s growth and popularity is testimony to the hard work of Alan Caldow and the NSW Department of Education and Communities,” Cr Kettle said. WINDELLAMA VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE BRIGADE

Burning-off now permitted with regulations While the fire season has finished and permits are not required for burning off from the 1st April 2011, there are still regulations that must be followed. Fines can apply if regulations are not carried out. For more information contact one of the Brigade pho ne numbers above.

Winter the most dangerous time for house fires

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Southern Tablelands Zone is urging residents in the Goulburn Mulwaree, Upper Lachlan and Yass Valley Local Government areas to be especially vigilant with fire safety in their home as winter takes hold.

“Many people wrongly believe that a house fire can’t happen to them,” said Peter Dyce Community Education Officer

“Every Winter, RFS volunteers attend numerous house fires in our area and many of these could have been avoided by residents taking a few simple steps”.

“Winter is the most dangerous period for house fires and it’s important that every home is made as fire safe as possible, by checking items like heaters, electric blankets, clothes dryers and smoke alarms”.

“Portable heaters should be kept well away from items like curtains, furniture and clothing at all times and residents with wood fired heaters should take special care by using a fireplace screen and properly disposing of hot ashes”.

“Always use a fire screen in front of open fires and close combustion heater doors to prevent sparks or embers from coming into contact with carpet, furniture and other combustibles”

“Never leave children or pets unsupervised in a room where an open fire or combustion heater is in use”

“Electric blankets should be checked for damage or frayed cords before they’re put on the bed and once they’re on the bed, turn them off when not in use”.

“Clothes dryers need to be checked regularly and the lint filter cleaned every time they’re used to prevent a fire starting”.

“And every home should have at least one working smoke alarm, which could give you valuable warning in the event of a fire and valuable seconds to get out”.

Peter Dyce said as well as taking these steps, it’s also important for every home to have a well rehearsed home fire escape plan.

A well rehearsed home fire escape plan means everyone in your home knowing what to do and where to go in the event of a fire”.

“It’s especially important for residents in rural or outlying areas, who may be living some distance from fire services”.

“Every second counts in a house fire and having a working smoke alarm and a well rehearsed escape plan could mean the difference between surviving a fire or not,” said Peter Dyce Community Education Officer

W h a t i s t h e C e n s u s ? The Census of Population and Housing aims to accurately count the number of people in Australia, their key characteristics, and the d w e l l i n g s i n w h i c h t h e y l i v e . It is conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) once every five years. During the Census every household and person in the country is required to answer specific questions on the paper form or through eCensus online.

W h e n i s t h e n e x t C e n s u s ? The 16th Census of Population and Housing will take place on the night of 9 August 2011. The 2011 Census also marks a significant milestone – 100 years of national Census taking in Australia.

Why is it important? The Census underpins Australia’s democracy and is crucial to communities, private institutions and all levels of government when planning infrastructure, community services a n d f a c i l i t i e s wh e r e y o u l i v e . For example Census information helps to determine where schools, hospitals, and roads are needed. Federal funding arrangements to the states and territories, including allocation of GST revenue, are also based on Census information.

Is Census information private & confidential? Yes – all information collected through the Census is strictly private and confidential. No one outside of the ABS (including other Government agencies) will ever see your Census responses. Also, individuals or households cannot be identified in Census results or data.

Is the Census compulsory? Yes, the Census is compulsory. The Census is authorised by the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

How is the count conducted? Census Collectors will start delivering the materials you’ll need from 29 July 2011 so you can par t i c ipa te in the Census .

You can complete your Census form online through the eCensus. The eCensus is fast, secure and easy, with online help available, and is protected by the strongest encryption technologies, making it safe and keeping your i n f o r m a t i o n c o n f i d e n t i a l .

If you complete the eCensus for your household, the Collector will not need to return to your dwelling.

You can also complete a paper Census form. After Census night, Collectors will return to collect the completed form, so have it ready for collection on the 10th August 2011.

Collectors will also ensure that people staying in hospitals, hotels and motels, camping or travelling around Australia on Census night are counted.

Confidentiality of information you provide The Census collects information relating to each person and household in the country. The Census is taken to provide information about the community as a whole and groups w i t h i n t h e c o m m u n i t y .

The personal information you provide in your Census form remains confidential to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). No information will be released in a way that would enable users of Census data to identify any particular individual or household. Organisations like government departments and direct marketing companies cannot have access to personal information from the Census.

Once processing of the Census forms is completed, all records of names and addresses are destroyed. The only exception is for those people who have elected to be part of the Census Time Capsule.

Windellama Landcare

At the beginning of May, Windellama Landcare took delivery of the long awaited printed copies of Carina Clarke’s first and second volumes of her Wild Windellama articles for Windellama news. Thanks to Chuck Mulkins for supplying the copy and Felicity Sturgiss for arranging the printing. Copies of the set are available from Windellama Landcare – phone John Pearce (4844 5244) or Sandra or Tony Greville (4844 5047) – at $10.00 for each set.

On Friday May 13 Windellama Landcare hosted the Upper Shoalhaven Natural Resource Management (NRM) Reference Group. These meetings are usually held at Braidwood (they also try to rotate them) – and are a get-together of interested groups to discuss land care and other natural resource management matters. In the afternoon they visited our projects – at Oallen Ford and the chain-of-ponds on Sandy Point Road.

There will be another busy bee at the chain-of-ponds on Saturday 30 July – removing old fences and preparing for a new fence – so bring your work gloves and pliers (and any other fencing tools if you wish). Lunch will be provided. Be there at 9.30 for a cuppa and a 10 am start.

For those who wish to buy pine trees, John Pearce (4844 5244) is taking orders now – please let him know how many trees you need by the 7 July 2011.

And further into the future – the Willoughby Bushcare group from Sydney, who enjoyed their tree-planting day with us last year, has set the date for their visit this year. They will come for the weekend of the 15 and 16 October 2011, when we will probably be continuing our work at the chain-of-ponds

If you are able to attend the busy bee on the 30 July – please ring the caterers Joy and John (4844 5225) or Sandra on (4844 5047) so that we make sure we have enough to tucker for all!

WINDELLAMA Public School’s annual Queen’s Birthday fireworks and auction fundraiser has been hailed by organisers as quite successful. The event drew many visitors to the village hall and oval including people from the South Coast who attend each year to experience what they described as a real Australian tradition. Auctioneer Ben Litchfield, who had driven down from Cooma as he does every year specially for the event, took nearly two hours to knock down the large array of new items that had been donated to the school by various businesses. The majority of these items fetched near market value and sometimes beyond with the spirited bidding by participants. There were some good bargains to be had amongst the offering too. The glow stick show bags proved quite a hit with the children who stood out from the evening darkness with their oversized glasses, bangles necklaces and other colourful luminescent items. Just before dark the large bonfire was lit and as people gathered around, the two pyrotechnicians from Foti Fireworks started the display that lasted for around 20 minutes.

What To Do If Your Partner Succumbs To Shopping Binges

- (Part 2)

Get to Know the Problem Although you are not a professional in this area you can still gain some insights into your partner’s growing shopping addiction. Your partner’s answers to some serious questions can help you define and understand the problem, and help determine what actions can be taken to eradicate it.

It would be quite interesting to know when this shopping behaviour began. Was it something your partner always displayed and you really never noticed, or is it a more recent behaviour and perhaps can be attributed to changes in your partner’s life? If recent your partner’s shopping binges may be pointing the finger at some personal or relationship issue.

Is it possible that this decision to save for a house/property has put some undue pressure on your partner, and has triggered some underlying fears they may have? What does a house purchase mean to them? Can they cope with changes that a house may bring? Are their fear driven behaviours a way to call halt to the whole process? Does your partner want to sabotage the property purchase? Or do they simply get a buzz from binge shopping?

It may be possible that your partner is frustrated by working hard and being deprived of some of the pleasures that shopping can purchase. Or your partner may feel neglected as they see your only focus and interest is on saving for a property. They may want more attention from you, and with their inappropriate behaviours they have got it.

What has been considered above is only hypothetical. As you discuss your partner’s behaviour you may gain more clarity as to their motivation. And if the issues raised are not too severe you and your partner might be able to work together to abate fears and to introduce strategies to change the actual behaviour itself.

WHAT TO DO? Explore Your Values To start with it may be a good idea to review the values that are the framework of your

relationship. It is not necessary for you and your partner to have identical values, but it is probably important that you both share some core values that bring a joint meaning and direction to your relationship.

As you explore your values you will discover whether both of you place the same importance on owning your own home. It is more than likely that if you both aspire for security and stability that the idea of home ownership would be appealing to both of you. There may also be other values that affirm this desire for property acquisition.

Further examination of these particular values may be all that is necessary to confirm your mutual desire to own your own home/property and to dispel any contrary considerations. Further such a review may reveal that your partner does not really believe in squandering money and in shopping recklessly, but that they may need some help in working through their issues. This could be indicative of some unrest that your partner is presently experiencing.

Proposed Discount Department Store

Council will consider closing Verner St in Goulburn as part of a proposed expansion of Goulburn’s Marketplace, which would include discount department store Big W. The proponent for the development will be asked to consider placing the proposal on public exhibition prior to lodgement of any application to gauge community opinion, along with discussing the urban design and heritage issues with local interest groups. There would be other specialty stores included in the development, and would also incorporate a basement carpark close to the existing supermarket and stores. The development would create a number of local jobs during the construction stage and once the centre is in full operation. The development may also include the possible acquisition of a Council car park for access and construction purposes following public exhibition of the proposals.
