Business Challenge:1. For many smaller enterprises or branch offices, a high-performance and flexible s

torage expansion solution for their existing application servers is required.2. DAS (direct attached storage) is not an efficient solution. A fiber channel SAN wa

s too expensive and too complicated to implement.

iSCSI can use existing networks and resources.

File Server Performance - NetBench

NetBench is a benchmark program that measures the performance of a file server in handling file I/O requests. It is a useful indicator of the performance of NAS device/ file server when it is simultaneously accessed by multiple users.

Superior Performance (NetBench)

The test results show that the TS-639 Pro delivers superior performance (over 300Mbps when serving 16 clients), under single disk configuration. The throughput of other NAS brands of the same level only reaches a half or less than that of QNAP TS-639 Pro.

Page 31: TS-639 Pro QNAP Professional 6-bay NAS Product Presentation December 2008

DOM Architecture with Embedded Fail-safe Dual OS

All the OS and applications are embedded on the DOM.

The TS-639 Pro allows system booting without accessing the physical disk sectors and that prevents unsuccessful system startup caused by bad block sectors or file errors on the hard drives.

Two operating systems are built on the DOM for system booting alternatively upon every system startup. When one fails, the other one will be used to boot up instead, and the failed OS is recoverable from the other healthy OS.

TS-639 Pro’s Reliable Software Platform

Unlike other NAS systems, the TS-639 Pro’s OS & applications are embedded on DOM and requires no installation on the hard disks.

Users don’t need to worry about unintended system power outage when upgrading the firmware.

Advanced disk configurations: RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 5+Spare, Single, and JBOD

Single disk RAID 0 RAID 1 RAID 5 (disk stripping) (disk mirroring) (disk stripping with parity)

Single disk

General modeSystem recognizes each drive as individual drive.

RAID 5 mode

Each entire data block is written on a data disk; parity for blocks in the same rank is generated on Writes, recorded in a distributed location and checked on Reads.RAID Level 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives to implement.

Parity %

The Most Advanced RAID Management - 1

RAID 0 mode

It recognizes 5 hard drives as one large drive, yielding higher performance than single disk mode. No redundancy provided.

RAID 1 mode

All drives are paired and mirrored. All data is duplicated 100% on a separate drive of the equivalent size.

Page 34: TS-639 Pro QNAP Professional 6-bay NAS Product Presentation December 2008

RAID 6 RAID 5+ hot spare JBOD

2 Parity %

RAID 6 disk volume is ideal for important data protection. To create a RAID 6 disk volume, a minimum of 4 hard disks are required. The total capacity of RAID 6 disk volume = the size of the smallest capacity disk in the array x (no. of hard disk – 2). It's recommended that you use same brand and same capacity hard drive to establish the most efficient hard drive capacity.RAID 6 can survive 2 disk failure and system can still operate properly.

You can combine two or more disks into one larger disk. During file saving, the file will be saved on physical disks sequentially but does not have a disk failure file protection function. The overall capacity of linear disk is the sum of all disks. Linear disk is generally used for storing large data and is not appropriate to use for file protection of sensitive data.

You can configure RAID 5 with 3 hard disk volume at the beginning stage and leave 1 hard disk as spare in case one of the disks in RAID 5 volume fails. The spare disk can quickly replace the failed one without turning off the NAS.

The Most Advanced RAID Management - 2

Advanced disk configurations: RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 5+Spare, Single, and JBOD

Page 35: TS-639 Pro QNAP Professional 6-bay NAS Product Presentation December 2008

The storage capacity of a RAID configuration can be expanded byreplacing the hard drives with larger ones. All the data will be kept and seamlessly moved to the newly installed hard drives. There is no need to turn off the server during the process.

Online RAID Capacity Expansion

The Most Advanced RAID Management - 3

Page 36: TS-639 Pro QNAP Professional 6-bay NAS Product Presentation December 2008
