Why Europe Won’t Let Greece GoRichard Palmer | June 18

    G . I I

ional Moneary Fund () €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) by he

end o he monh. And ha’s he sar o a gaunle o loan repay-

mens—i owes $11 billion by he end o Sepember. Wih ime

running ou, European officials are reporedly preparing or a

    caasrophe.

Wha exacly will happen? I don’ know. Bu I do know ha

in he long erm Greece is going o remain under he European

    Union’s influence.

In lae 2008, Greece was in serious financial rouble. Greece

owed billions o banks and financial insrucions across he EU. I

hese banks didn’ ge heir money, some o hem would go bank-

rup oo, rigering a chain reacion ha would cause a global

    financial crisis.

So Europe sepped in. Now mos Greek deb is owned by insi-

uions. I Greece didn’ pay back is debs now, i would no rig-

ger ha kind o global crisis.

Speculaion has risen ha his is wha EU officials planned

all along. The “bailou” in 2008 wasn’ designed o save Greece.

I was designed o save off he crisis long enough or he EU o

    shore up is posiion.

No everyone agrees. Leting Greece qui he euro and go bus

sill has is economic risks. Bu here is a more significan reason

ha some—including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, i he

rumors are o be believed—oppose leaving Greece high and dry.

The geopoliical landscape has changed dramaically since

2008. Russia is now openly hosile o much o he Wes. Mean

while, he Middle Eas is in chaos, and ha is now Europe’s prob

lem. Ambrose Evans-Prichard wroe in he Telegraph: “Nobody

should underesimae he poliical hurricane ha will ollow i

Europe proves incapable o holding moneary union ogeher

and Greece spins ou o conrol. The pos-war order is already

under exisenial hrea rom a revanchis Russia. Sae auhoriy

has collapsed along an arc o slaugher hrough he Middle Eas

and Norh Arica, while an auhoriarian neo-Otoman Turkey is

slipping rom he Wesern camp. To lose Greece in hese circum

    sances—and o lose i badly—would be an earhquake.”

alks wih Russia on uure miliary cooperaion, including a ac-

ory o make Kalashnikovs on Greek soil,” wroe Telegraph assis-

an edior Jeremy Warner. “These repors should perhaps be

aken wih a large pinch o sal as no more han ani-Greek pro-

paganda. Even so, he broader hrea o geopoliical realignmen

    is no wihou oundaion.”

Greece, Serbia and a ew ohers in he region have deep his-

oric ies and culural ies o Russia. Hisorically, Russia has

backed and proeced hese counries agains he powers o cen-ral Europe

The Eurasia Group also repored ha his problem was on Ger-

man leaders’ minds: “[T]he prospec o insabiliy in he Balkans,

he Black Sea area and he Easern Medierranean has become

even more pressing. This, raher han financial conagion, seems

o be he real problem or Europe and is cerainly wha currenly

    preoccupies Germany mos.”

Such a rapprochemen would devasae European securiy.

Afer having expanded   righ up o Russia’s borders, he

Wes would suddenly ind ha Russia had leaprogged hem

and gained an ally in prime posiion o projec power in he

Medierranean. In he 1990s, Europe and   ough a war  o

ensure heir conrol over he Balkans. They’re no abou o losean even more imporan piece o real esae.

The Middle Eas is also a major concern here. As he Trumpet

has noed beore, Cyprus is a very sraegic base or Europe o

projec power o he Middle Eas. Cyprus is Greece’s litle broher.

Where Greece goes, Cyprus will ollow, as much because o eco-

    nomic necessiy as culural ies.

I Greece leads Cyprus and Serbia ou o he EU’s orbi, a one

sroke Europe’s abiliy o projec power souh and eas is cu

off. Does his mean he EU will pull ou all he sops o preven

Greece rom leaving he euro? No necessarily. Bu i will affec

how Greece quis he euro—i i does qui in he end.

I Greece leaves he euro, he EU will make sure i remains in

he European orbi. Even Wolgang Schäuble—he bad cop in

he Greek drama, who reporedly wans Greece ou o he euro—

wans o give Greece a kind o European Marshall Plan aferward. Earlier his week, German European Commissioner Gün

her Oetinger said ha EU officials were preparing plans o help

Greece i i descends ino a sae o emergency. They have plans

he said, o ensure he power says on, hospials ge medical sup

plies, and he police ge paid.

This would also ensure Greece remains a European ally i i

leaves he euro. I couldn’ drif over o Russia i is police were

being paid by Brussels, or i German cash was keeping he power

    on.

As he Trumpet has said rom he sar o his crisis, he euro

was designed o bring he EU ogeher. Is archiecs knew i

would provoke crises unil Europe is orced o creae a common

governmen o go wih he common currency. Some members ohe eurozone may no be par o ha common governmen. Bu

Europe is no going o le his ool designed o creae uniy push

some o is members over o Russia.

    MIDDLE EAST

     Iran’s Tightening Stranglehold of Afghanistan

    Anthony Chibarirwe | June 16

    O I

regional influence is o ideniy he highly unsable naions

o he Middle Eas—Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Libya, Sudan—

and, as a recen repor verifies, Aghanisan.

On June 11, he Wall Street Journal repored on Iran’s suppor

or he Taliban. Tha’s no acually news: Tehran’s documened

backing o he Taliban goes as ar back as 2007, despie he prior

ension ha exised beween he Shiie Iranians and he Sunni

Taliban and Iran’s prior suppor o ’s atack on he Taliban

    beginning in 2001.

Wha’s news is how ha suppor has recenly increased  in

scope and volume, and how ha suppor has increased in spite

of  he Unied Saes bending over backward or rapprochemen

wih Iran. The  Journal’s repor said ha Aghan and Wesern

auhoriies have observed Iran increasing no only is supply o

weapons and ammuniion o he Taliban, bu also is raining and

    recruimen o Taliban milians.

“Iran supplies us wih whaever we need,” said one Taliban

    commander.

According o hose auhoriies, Tehran’s suppor or he Tali-

ban is par o a wo-pronged sraegy o couner he clou o boh

he U.S. and he Islamic Sae in boh Aghanisan and he Middle

    Eas in general.

The drawdown o U.S. soldiers rom Aghanisan has made i a

lo easier or Iran o smugle arms o he Taliban.

Iran is also supporing he Taliban because he erroris

group’s saure in Aghanisan is growing. The Aghan govern

men in Kabul is engaged in peace alks wih he Taliban. I he

Taliban gains greaer influence in Aghanisan, so oo will Iran

As one Wesern diploma said, “Iran is beting on he reemer

    gence o he Taliban.”

Arming, unding, raining and recruiing he Taliban, in addi

ion o undermining he U.S., diminishes he influence o he

Islamic Sae in Aghanisan and oher places like Syria.

Bu by supporing he Taliban, Iran does no only come ino

conflic wih he murderous Islamic Sae or he naive Unied

Saes, i also comes ino direc conflic wih oher orces

fighing he Taliban in Aghanisan—chiefly Germany—he

hird-larges roop conribuor o Aghanisan afer he U.S

    and Briain.

The Bible reveals ha a German-led European Union will soon

conron Iran, he king o he souh o Bible prophecy.

49 Percent of Israelis: Obama Purposely Harming U.S.-Israel Ties

    Arutz Sheva | June 18

    A  K C T

ha almos one hal o he Israeli public agrees wih M.K.

Michael Oren, he ormer Israeli ambassador in he U.S., who

said his week ha U.S. Presiden Barack Obama has “deliber-aely” caused a deerioraion in U.S.-Israel ies. …

In an op-ed or he Wall Street Journal on Monday, Oren said

ha while Israel may have made “misakes” vis-a-vis he U.S.,

Obama’s misseps agains Israel were carried ou on purpose.

“From he momen he enered office, Mr. Obama promoed

an agenda o championing he Palesinian cause and achieving

a nuclear accord wih Iran,” wroe Oren. Obama abandoned he

wo core principles o Israel’s alliance wih America, he accused.

One core principle was he concep o avoiding public dis-

agreemens wih Israel so as no o encourage heir common

enemies o exploi he disharmony, said Oren. Anoher was “no

surprises.” While Israeli leaders in he pas were given orewarn

ing abou major U.S. policy saemens regarding he Middle Eas

Obama did no warn Israel beore he “changed 40 years o U.S

policy by endorsing he 1967 lines wih land swaps—ormerly hePalesinian posiion—as he basis or peace-making.”

Similarly unpleasan surprises occurred, Oren added, when

Obama offered o suppor a UN Securiy Council invesigaion o

Israel’s communiies in Judea and Samaria, and “o back Egyp

ian and Turkish effors o orce Israel o reveal is al leged nuclear

    capabiliies.” …

“[In Zechariah 11:14,] God says ha He will “break he broher-

hood beween Judah and Israel,” he modern-day naions of

Israel and he Unied Saes (and Briain), r especively.”

Obama Admin Excluded Iran From Threat Assessment

Washington Free Beacon | June 17

    L U.S.

disclosed effors by he Obama adminisraion o play down he

errorism hrea posed by Iran in an official repor issued his year.

Direcor o Naional Inelligence James Clapper admited in

a recen leter o op senaors ha he adminisraion wrongly

excluded reerences o he global errorism hrea posed by Iran

and is error affiliae Hezbollah in he 2015 World Threa Assess-

men o he U.S. Inelligence Communiy.

“A specific reerence o he erroris hrea rom Iran and Hez-bollah—which was no included in any o he drafs o he esi-

mony [offered beore lawmakers]—would have been appropriae

or he 2015 Assessmen, bu he lack o is inclusion is in no way

a change in he [inelligence communiy’s] assessmen,” Clapper

wroe in a June 3 leter o op senaors.

Clapper’s leter came in response o an earlier leter rom

a delegaion o senaors who were seeking o discover why he

Obama adminisraion excluded reerences o Iran’s global er

    roris operaions. …

Some criics accuse he Obama adminisraion o downplay

ing he erroris hrea posed by Iran and is proxies in order

o appease he Islamic Republic and preserve he ongoing alks

    aimed a inking a wide-ranging nuclear deal. …

[One o he members o ha Senae delegaion, Sen. Dan Coas

(Ind.), said,] “I welcome Direcor Clapper’s recogniion o ha

error, bu I remain concerned abou he adminisraion’s prioriies.” …

Sen. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.), one o he leading criics o he admin

israion’s diplomacy wih Iran, said ha U.S. concessions o Iran

a he negoiaing able would only embolden is rogue behavior. …

Pope Calls for New World GovernmentRichard Palmer | June 22

    N

anicipaed. The leaking o a draf o Pope Francis’s laes

    encyclical—an official addiion o Caholic docrine—has led

o quie he buildup o speculaion in he media. The ac ha

i deals wih global warming means ha i has been discussedacross many differen ypes o media ha rarely pay close aten-

ion o papal pronouncemens. Briain’s lef-wing Guardian news-

paper even published whole secions o i.

This suis he pope’s purpose or he documen perecly. In

his inroducion he makes clear ha, unlike his las encyclical,

he’s no jus wriing o members o he Caholic Church. Insead,

“I would like o ener ino dialogue wih all people,” he wries. The

Guardian called i “he mos asonishing and perhaps he mos

ambiious papal documen o he pas 100 years.”

I’s a bold aim or a bold documen. Following on rom he

pope’s early criicism o capialism in his encyclical Evangelii

Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) i is a suble bid or much greaer

Caholic conrol over he global economy, global poliics and evenhe whole globe in general.

This new encyclical, called Laudato Si  ( Be Praised), is he

pope’s plea o humaniy on behal o “our siser, Moher Earh.”

A good chunk o i does deal wih global warming. Bu here’s

also much on he many oher ways man is desroying his plane—

hrough hings like polluion, shorages o resh waer and he

    general “sel-desrucive” behavior o mankind—warnings ha

would no be ou o place on our websie.

This warning especially could almos have come rom a Trum-

     pet aricle:

“I is oreseeable ha, once cerain resources have been

depleed, he scene will be se or new wars, albei under he

guise o noble claims. War always does grave harm o he envi-ronmen and o he culural riches o peoples, risks which are

magnified when one considers nuclear arms and biological

    weapons.”

The pope also warns ha “people no longer seem o believe in

a happy uure; hey no longer have blind rus in a beter omor-

row based on he presen sae o he world and our echnical

abiliies”—adding ha i has become clear he science does no

have all he answers. He addresses “he crisis o amily and social

ies”—calling amily he “basic cell o sociey.”

Bu i is when Francis ges o he soluion o hese problems

ha his leter is mos dramaic. Once again, Francis places he

blame or boh he coming environmenal crisis ha he oresees,

as well as world povery, on he shoulders o “he curren global

sysem, where prioriy ends o be given o speculaion and he

pursui o financial gain.” There is some ruh o his—man’s cur-

ren sysem is ar rom perec—hough i ignores he ac ha

communism has had more han is air share o environmenal

disasers and does much less o help he poor.

And he soluion? As soon as Francis sars addressing his

subjec in Chaper 5 o his leter, he calls or a radical new power

o be given conrol in he world.

This is he hear, core and radical message o his docu-

men—no he global warming debae ha has aken up so many

newspaper columns. Frances wries ha we mus hink o “one

    world wih a common plan.”

Here he builds on he previous pope’s, Benedic ’s, radi

cal call or a “world pol iical auhoriy” in one o his encyclicals

Benedic’s saemen is dramaic and worh quoing in ull—asFrancis does: “To manage he global economy; o revive econo

mies hi by he crisis; o avoid any deerioraion o he presen

crisis and he greaer imbalances ha would resul; o bring

abou inegral and imely disarmamen, ood securiy and

This is he genius o Francis. He has exacly he same message

had his encyclicals prined in he Guardian or endorsed by lef

Bu Francis’s call goes beyond uopian dream. I’s much morespecific han some kind o airy-airy new world order. He also

uses language ha is very pracical. He says “enorceable iner

naional agreemens are urgenly needed” and alks abou “global

    regulaory norms.”

“The 21s cenury, while mainaining sysems o gover

he power o naion saes, chiely because he economic and

inancial secors, being ransnaional, ends o prevail over

devise sronger and more eicienly organized inernaional

agreemen among naional governmens, and empowered o

impose sancions.”Las year Francis published wha was reerred o as his call

will speak abou when he addresses he UN in Sepember. During

he same rip, he will also be he firs pope o address a join ses

The global economy has sill no recovered rom he economic

insiuions including Congress, he presidency, he

Supreme Cour, banks and organized religion, according o he

    laes Gallup poll.

“Americans’ confidence in mos major U.S. insiuions

remains below he hisorical average or each one,” a Gallup

spokesman said in a news release. Only he miliary, in which 72percen o Americans express confidence, up rom a hisorical

average o 68 percen, and small business, wih 67 percen con-

fidence, up rom 63, are currenly raed higher han heir his-

    orical norms. …

Only 8 percen have confidence in Congress, down by 16 poins

    rom a long-erm average o 24 percen—he lowes o all insiu-

ions raed. The raing is abou he same as las year’s 7 percen,

he lowes Gallup has ever measured or any insiuion.

Thiry-hree percen have confidence in he presidency, a

drop rom a hisorical average o 43 percen.

Thiry-wo percen have confidence in he Supreme Cour,

    down rom 44.

All in all, i’s a picure o a naion discouraged abou is pres-en and worried abou is uure, and highly doubul ha is

insiuions can pull America ou o is rough. …

“Americans’ confidence in mos major insiuions has been

down or many years as he naion has deal wih prolonged wars

in Iraq and Aghanisan, a major recession and slugish economic

improvemen, and parisan gridlock in Washingon,” he Gallup

spokesman said. “In ac, 2004 was he las year mos insiuions

were a or above heir hisorical average levels o confidence. Perhaps no coincidenally, 2004 was also he las year Americans

saisacion wih he way hings are going in he Unied Saes

averaged beter han 40 percen. Currenly, 28 percen o Ameri

cans are saisfied wih he sae o he naion.”

The Gallup spokesman added: “From a broad perspecive

Americans’ confidence in all insiuions over he las wo years

has been he lowes since Gallup began sysemaic updaes o a

    larger se o insiuions in 1993.” …

The police also have experienced a drop in public eseem, wih

52 percen o Americans saying hey are confiden in he police

compared wih 57 percen who have been confiden in he police

    hisorically. …

ple who are ineresed in sraying, in cheaing on heir

spouses. Or, as he websie pus i, people who are “looking or

a litle romance ouside heir curren relaionship.” The sie now

    has a million Briish users.

I you are old-ashioned and simplisic enough o disapprove

o his, as undermining o marriage, hen one o he company’srecen press releases can help you owards a more sophisicaed

view. Having polled 200 o is salwar adulerers, who have been

using he sie or 11 years, i ound ha wo hirds said ha heir

exramarial advenures had srenghened heir marriages. The

websie also claims ha by helping people o sray “discreely,” i

makes an affair less likely o be rumbled. In oher words, i saves

you rom seeking risky hrills wih he leaky-mouhed village

ar, leading o he collapse o your marriage, i i can be called a

marriage. One user says: “I need o ge my kicks rom somewhere,

having a secre affair is wha exhilaraes me he mos—i’s a high

you can’ experience anywhere else in lie.”

Illiciencouners.com porrays adulery as sexy and nau-

    ral—and i’s no alone in his. Suddenly here’s a swarm o sies

adverising “married daing” services: affairsclub.com, nosring-

    satached.com, vicoriamilan.com, ashleymaddison.com (slo-

gan: “Lie is shor. Have an affair.”). There’s even a married daing

wachdog, which adops a very lofy one o voice and claims o

sor he “decen” adulery sies rom he rip-offs. There are films

abou adulery, a hi series (The Affair) and endless magazine

eaures all oying wih he idea ha married couples can have

heir wedding cake and ea i.

And can hey? Is his all jus harmless hanky-panky, anoher

sep owards liberaion? I don’ hink so. I hink we should

consider ha all hese websies are seriously morally wrong, jus

as wrong as an organizaion ha promoed racism.

Tha migh sound excessive. Bu is i really? I we hink ha

marriage is a morally good hing, hen why shouldn’ we deend i

as srongly as we deend he principle o equaliy? …

On sexual moraliy, we seem o have wo principles. One: Any

sor o sex beween consening aduls is fine, i is one’s righ, orsex is he pures realm o individual sel-expression. Two: Mar

riage is good. Is sabiliy enables people o flourish, and is prov

ably he bes srucure wihin which o raise children. I is an

immense conribuor o “he common good.” …

In pracice, his radiion ges subly sidelined by he easier

appeals o individual righs. … So he problem is no ha we have

sopped believing in he moral good o marriage. The problem is

ha we are losing he habi o expressing his belie. Tha’s a dan

gerous loss. Our inariculacy will allow he belie o weaken, o

all ino disrepair. This is already happening. Today’s liberal-lef

ies marry apologeically, as i hey are slighly leting he side

down. They are embarrassed o be oping in o a radiion ha

Tories see as morally imporan. …

Bu you can’ remove moraliy rom marriage, or make i a

merely personal mater. … And marriage’s power o spread social

virue is rooed in he rus ha is esablished beween a sexu

ally aihul couple. To say ha an affair can srenghen a mar

riage is like saying ha a pacifis movemen can be srenghened

    by some bombing. …

Affirming he moraliy o marriage is awkward. Square hough

i sounds, i means quesioning wheher we should be so oleran

o he enerainmen indusry’s hedonisic view o sex. I’s easy

enough o criicize crass realiy shows and porn; i’s rickier o

admi ha qualiy dramas such as Mad Men are par o he prob-

lem (as indeed are mos novels abou adulery, however highly

eseemed as ar). Bu i here is serious moral worh in marriage,

hen here is serious moral worh in fideliy, and we mus say

so, however uncool we sound. We mus challenge he narraive

o sex as pure sel-expression, and affirm he narraive o sex as

somehing whose ordering, in marriage, brings order.

“Since i is a basic ruism ha a solid family srucure is he

foundaional bulwark of any sable and permanen sociey,

his fac means only one hing—civilizaion as we know i is

on he way down—and ou—unless ha grea ‘unseen srong

hand from someplace’ soon inervenes and saves oday’s sick

    sociey.”

Oulook,” he Congressional Budge Office saed blunly: “The

long-erm oulook or he ederal budge has worsened drama-

ically over he pas several years, in he wake o he 2007-2009

recession and slow recovery …. I curren law remained generally

unchanged in he uure … growing budge deficis … would push

[he naional] deb above is curren high level.”

I’s all abou governmen spending ha’s baked ino he cake:

The Baby Boomers reiring and asking he governmen o make

good on is Social Securiy and Medicare promises and he rising

coss o healhcare along wih “an increasing number o recipi-ens o exchange subsidies and Medicaid benefis atribuable o

he Affordable Care Ac [which will] push up spending … i cur-

ren laws … remain unchanged,” said he repor.

The creaed wo avenues or poliicians concerned abou

he mater o pursue: one, o keep he deficis rom going any

higher, and he oher o bring hem back down o hisoric levels.

For he firs, axes would have o increase by $1,450 per person

per year, saring immediaely, or Social Securiy benefis would

have o be cu by $2,400 per person per year, saring immedi-

    aely.

The second scenario is even worse.

The repor considers he consequences o doing nohing: A

some poin invesors in governmen bonds would become con

cerned abou geting heir money back and would demand higher

ineres raes o compensae or ha risk. This would accelerae

he deficis o new levels. As he repor noed, “The larger he gov

ernmen’s deb, he greaer he risk o a fiscal crisis.”

The need o und hose promises would drain capial ha

would oherwise be invesed in business opporuniies in he

hopes o generaing wealh, urher slowing he economy. …

Using he ’s numbers and applying hem o a lower middle

class amily illusraes he poin. A amily making, say, $40,000a year, wih debs o $180,000 (home morgage, car paymens

credi cards, ec.) is going o have difficuly making minimum pay

mens, o say nohing o paying down hose debs. Bu i he real

debs are $2 million, here’s no way. Tha’s he real conversaion

ha he is avoiding wih is long-winded bu largely irrelevan

discussions o various scenarios o bring down he naional deb.

In his 1926 novel, The Sun Also Rises, Ernes Hemingway had

wo o his principal characers, Bill and Mike, engage in he ol

    lowing conversaion:

Bill: How did you go bankrup?

Mike: Two ways: gradually, and hen suddenly.
