We live in a world in which to believe in Christ alone for salvation is of the highest offense to so many people. even much of “the church” has come to believe that

God is so loving he would never allow anyone to suffer in a place called hell. This has led many in our day and age to proclaim a universalistic approach to salvation, a belief that maintains that in the end Christ’s sacrifice on the cross will be applied to everyone. on the other side of the issue we hear some proclaim the “good news” of the cross in such negative light and with such animosity one has to wonder who would want to accept such an offer.

The first of these positions places so much emphasis on the love of God that they completely fail to see the clear teaching in scripture, God is love, but he is also holy and just. This view fails to recognize the extreme gravity and seriousness of sin. it is for these reasons we need to present the cross of Christ for what it is, “good news” for sinners of which we all are. This good news however must be acted on. it forces a decision, to accept the gift of Christ’s cross is to change from darkness to light, from self to him as lord. one of my favorite verses in scripture is 2 Corinthians 5:19. This passage tells us of the great love of God to provide salvation for sinners while honoring both his love and justice. it teaches us that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, we often loose sight of the Father’s role in the cross of Christ. We speak of the Father as judge and the son as savior. The truth is that both the Father and the son were in perfect unity. This would bring about salvation to all who believe. Christ’s sacrifice allows you and me to have fellowship and be reconciled (brought into his family) due to Jesus

carrying our sins and bearing our punishment so we might have everlasting life.

of all the sayings Jesus uttered from the cross the one that has always haunted me the most is when he said “my God, my God why have you forsaken me?” Clearly this is a crying quote of psalm 22. how can God forsake God if the incarnation is true, of which i believe it is. We see in this cry that Jesus was fulfilling all scripture as israel’s true messiah. in fact it is because Jesus the only begotten son of God was to die for the sins of his people and for all who would place their trust in him that it necessitated God coming in flesh in the first place, since immortality belongs to God. The perfect mediator between God and man, the God-man would show how deep the Father’s love for us is in the laying down of his life. no matter how long or short the separation upon the cross was in this God forsakenness, the truth is that it was the first time in all eternity past that there was a brokenness in the Trinity, but even then there was complete unity. The Father felt the loss of the son and the son that of his Father. after his cry of dereliction came the great proclamation that it was finished…all the work he had been sent to do.

i hope this easter season you will focus on the gift that God has so richly given. The offer is placed before us to accept or reject, to choose life or death. let us choose wisely. “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth on him shall not perish, but have everlasting life”.

love in Christ,

Pastor Jim
