UNIQUE

The transformation process experienced by Bilbao Bizkaia is clearly visible as you wander around the city and the green spaces surrounding it. You can enjoy avant-garde architecture which happily lives alongside a deeply-rooted identity that is evident in the area’s heritage, culture and cuisine.

A consequence of this coexistence is the commerce now available, ranging from traditional shops selling local products to stores displaying the latest trends in their win-dows. They are all establishments that will make your shopping experience truly unique.

This leaflet aims to offer a sample of all of this. An invitation to enjoy the tourist attractions the area has to offer and to take the opportunity to have a look around the interesting stores you’ll find along the way.

In Bilbao Bizkaia you can purchase all the products that make this place so unique, and we are keen for you to take a little of our way of being with you.

It may seem obvious that buying mementos from souvenir shops is a most traditional shopping ex-

perience while travelling. But when you visit any of these

types of shops, you will see that here

we want to make sure that what

we offer is representa-tive of our identity and

has a very p e r s o n a l

essence.

For example, in these shops you’ll find txikito glasses (used to “txikitear” or drink small glasses of young wines at any bar) and miniature reproductions of the equipment used in Basque sports, such as harrijasotzailes, aiz-kolaris and Basque pelota.

The seafaring essence of our re-gion is evident in the “arrantzale” clothing, or the meticulous repro-ductions of the fishing boats you can see along the Basque coast.

For lovers of the contemporary, a good idea is to bring home a book about architecture or reproductions of works of art you may find, as well as any of the other incredibly original items you’ll found in museum shops.

In some tourist offices you can pur-chase traditional items from this region such as folk pottery or reproductions of the Bilbao pavement tile in any form: from choco-lates to silk scarves.

If anything truly characterises Bil-bao Bizkaia today, it is a culture in which identity and traditions com-bine with absolute modernity. In line with this, we thought it would be a good idea to prepare what we like to call the “Shopping concept”.At souvenir shops, museum shops and the shops in certain tourist of-fices, you will find products that represent the heart and soul of the Basque Country, ranging from traditional costumes and handicrafts to crea-tions produced by con-temporary designers.

In red and white Walking though the Athletic Club of Bilbao museum or its official stores is an extremely exciting ex-perience. Take home a memento of this emblematic club, founded in

the 19th century, such as a piece of pitch or a model

of San Mamés, a football, a stuffed lion...

When you visit one of the lo-cations where “Game of Thrones” was filmed, the San

Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage, take the opportunity to discover some of the txakolí wineries along the coast of Uribe, Urdabai or inland in both of these areas, all of which are of top quality and can be toured with experts.

If you prefer craft beer, still in the area of Uribe or in Encartaciones or Bilbao, you can watch it being made and try different varieties.

If you are still on the coast, pay a vis-it to Bermeo, home to a leading fish canning industry with products such as bonito tuna and anchovies.

The fodder from the inland moun-tains, the staple diet of the latxas sheep, is partly responsible for the excellent quality of Idiazabal and Carranzana cheese.

As you wander around the mar-kets we have recommended, and through many grocery stores, you will be able to buy these products that are part of the Basque identity and the basis of the excellent cui-sine prepared here, as well as many more. These include honey, cold meats, piperrak (chilli peppers) and fruit and vegetables, many of which bear the Quality Label.

There is no better way to discover the essence of a country or region than by taking a look at its markets, its most characteristic products and the way in which they are prepared. That is why you should not miss a visit to the agri-cultural and livestock fairs or the local markets, some of which have been in existence for over 100 years. You can see locals’ enthusiasm for always offering the best to those who know how to choose.Would you like to see how all these delicacies get from the farms of Bis-cay and the Cantabrian Sea to the shop or the market and how they are pre-pared?Do you want to know what you abso-lutely must try? When you stroll around Bilbao, you will see that it is a city open to the world where new trends in architecture and design reflect contemporary inclinations. And all this leads to a very trendy lifestyle seen at festivals, in music and a way of

life that is reflected in the creation of fashion, accessories and art.

But it goes even further. The restoration experienced by the city and the province since the opening of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is reflected in the shops with avant-garde ar-

chitecture and décor, which are worthy of a visit and, of course, a

purchase.

In recognition of those who strive to create new trends and define the identity of the region where they live, we would like to highlight some

of the stores and shopping centres at the fore-front in Bilbao Bizkaia.

Just stroll around Bilbao through Abando, In-dautxu, Gran Vía and the Old Quarter or through some of the villages of Biscay to see authentic design in fabrics, clothing and accessories.

You can find jewellers that utilize Basque sym-bols and images such as Eguzkilores (sunflow-ers) and lauburus (Basque crosses), as well as jewellers who design exclusive pieces.

In an ever-elegant city like Bilbao you can find fashion designers that are a symbol of creativ-ity and who, in many cases, manage their own brands.

ART DISTRICTA district that is home to some of the most im-portant art galleries in the world: the Guggen-heim Museum Bilbao, The Bilbao Fine Arts Mu-seum, Itsasmuseum Bilbao, Azkuna Zentroa, the Contemporary Photography Centre, the Sala Rekalde, Bilbao Arte, Athletic Club Museum, etc.

Avant-garde art and culture is expressed in and around the Art District. Wander through it, you are bound to find the style that comes closest to your taste in art.

Shopping authentic shops

When you enter one of these shops, you will inevitably be surrounded by smells, colours and memories from the past, now present, caus-ing you to feel the true essence of this place.

Shelves filled with canned goods, cold meats hanging down, loose pulses or salted cod, chemists with their ceramic containers, hat and espadrille shops... images that are the setting for the people who kindly welcome you and who, in many cases, bear the tradition of the business in their surnames.

SHOPS THAT HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER

Wandering around the Old Quarter of Bilbao, or the Historic Centres of the dif-

ferent towns of Biscay, will give you an opportunity to discover them.

In Bilbao, if it's cuisine you're look-ing for, try López Oleaga or La Casa del Bacalao. Not to mention patis-series (pastelerías) such as Zuri-calday, New York or Nevada.

For chemists, in Bilbao visit Ce-breiro, also known as the Little Pharmacy Museum.

Travelling around the city and the province, you can discover other authentic shops where you can buy truly Basque products such as those available at Hadalondi, the espadrilles and sandals at Bizkar-guenaga and the umbrellas at Leoz.

Also typical from here are the 'equipment' for fronton games such as balls or baskets as well as musical instruments such as the dulzaina, alboka and txistu.

Of course, many other sectors have offerings such as basket shops, hardware stores, lighting shops, wine boutiques and food shops, haberdasheries, perfume shops, fabric stores, etc.

Culture on paper and from fair to fairBookshops that have been around forever are a treasure to be enjoyed year-round.

However, there are also many book fairs throughout Biscay: Mungia and Bermeo in March, in Barakaldo in April and in Santurtzi, Ermua and Bil-bao in May. There is the antique book fair in October on the Arenal in Bilabo and the Basque book fairs in Decem-ber in Galdakao and the renowned Durangoko Azoka.

Bollo de mantequilla (Butter bun)

Marshmallow hard candy

Another delightful story is that of the carolina. This meringue spiral dipped in chocolate and

egg, which takes its name from the daughter of the pastry-maker who invented it for the child's birthday, is now a symbol of Bilbao.

Other well-known symbols of Bilbao's pastry industry include Russians, Jesuits and Cristinas and the celebrated bollos de man-tequilla (butter buns).

All over Biscay you will find Gâteau Basque, another classic.

Other classics include marshmal-low hard candies, which are great for throat aches. They even still have the name of the granddaughter of the founder, Santiago Ollarbide, on their wrapping. That is why they are popularly referred to as santiaguitos. Chocolate truffles, tarta de Begoña and tarta Gernika are also delicious desserts to try.

If you visit Gernika-Lumo do not for-get to buy some ori-baltzak, pieces of cake either dipped in white choc-olate, which takes on a yellow colour (hori), or dark chocolate (beltza).

Anise doughnuts in Amorebieta, artopilas in Durango and Elorrio, shortbread in Karrantza... Each vil-lage and district of Biscay has del-icacies that you can't find anywhere else in the world. You’ll want to try them all!

At Christmastime, don't forget to visit one of the traditional nougat shops to try sokonusko, a chocolate nougat typical of Biscay.

Monastery sweets We’ve always said that the people who dedicate their lives to god make divine-tasting sweets. That is why you shouldn't forget to try the cakes from the Santa Ana monastery in Elorrio or the mos-tachones or fruit bonbons from the historic Zenarruza monastery in Ziortza-Bolibar.

A GOOD IDEA!

If you have a sweet tooth or think pastries make the perfect souvenir, you are in luck. Bilbao Bizkaia in general offer a splendid selection. Different and special desserts and sweets that are traditional in many cases and exceptional in the ma-jority. What's more, many of them come with delightful stories making them even more mysterious and appetising. For example, did you know that the famous Rice Cake is called a rice cake because the recipe that came with the Basque sailors called for rice flour? To-day, Bizkarra pastry-makers have recovered the original recipe and are once again making them with rice flour.

Beans from Gernika

Piperrak (chilli peppers)

The quality of canned seafood and fish from the Biscay coast is well-known.

Towns such as Ondarroa and Ber-meo, among others, are the names found on many of the tins and cans of bonito tuna and anchovies that make their way to our dining ta-bles.

You can witness the artisan prepa-ration of these products if you visit any of the factories in these areas.

From the garden, there are puls-es and the acclaimed piperrak (chilli peppers), fresh peppers and beans from Gernika and red on-ions from Zalla.

Cod, king of the dining table in Bis-cay (pil-pil, ajoarriero, a la vizcaí-na, club ranero, etc.), can be found in the typical bacaladas (salted cod preparation) in salt, canned or prepared and packed ready to take away.

Numerous cheeses, with designa-tion of origin Idiazabal, have won prizes at many international com-petitions.

Don't forget to try mamia (sheep's milk curd) with eztia (honey) from Gorbea.

And to wash it down, an excellent wine from the nearby Basque region Rioja Alavesa, craft beer made here, txakolí from Biscay or a cold sagardoa (cider) .

Another great activity in Bilbao is visiting its delightful mar-kets such as:

Mercadillo del 2 de Mayo, on the first Saturday of the month on this street in the revived neighbourhood of Old Bilbao, you’ll find vintage clothing, handicrafts, antiques and more.

Flower market. Full of scent and colour. Every Sunday on Bilbao's Arenal.

Gure Lurreko Merkatua, launched by the City Council of Bilbao, Bizkaia-mendi and Slow Food Biscay with participation from farmers from Biscay. You can purchase delicious in-season products here every Sat-urday.

Mercadillo de Bolueta, Sunday mornings give you the opportuni-ty to find second-hand items and clothing that is no longer used, but is still in good shape.

Open Your Ganbara, in the old Ar-tiach biscuit factory. A kind of flea market that takes place every Sun-day.

Christmas Market. During Advent, you can purchase Christmassy products and handicrafts while lis-tening to Christmas carols.

Markets aren't only great places to find second-hand items and an-tiques, they are also a source of in-spiration for artists and designers able to give new life to discarded goods, because all things vintage are in fashion.

Search and rummage through items to find that unique and unexpected piece. There is a great love of open-air markets and second-hand shops here, providing you the opportunity to have a great time in a diverse environment while searching for that surprise. In Bilbao there is a mar-ket in the Plaza Nueva, a classic where stamp collectors, numismatists, pet sell-ers and second-hand gem, book, music, and comic book sellers gather every Sun-day morning. You can take a look around and enjoy a delicious txakoli and a pintxo or two while you’re at it.

bizkaia eskutik

Bizkaia Eskutik is an opportunity to take home a piece of Basque

culture and tradition.

From the txalaparta to Cantabrian whales. From flysh to latxa wool. From rain to cheese. From iron to lime trees in bloom. From fishing nets to cowbells. Objects that are each a small part of our history and invite you to take an exciting journey to the world of the past, though not to stay.

Thanks to its innovative format, based on collaboration between handicraft and design profes-sionals, Bizkaia Eskutik does not limit itself to contemporary inter-pretations of well-known objects, it rather it opens the door to the future. A future in which experi-ences, feelings, excitement, and surprise are essential parts of the journey.

That is Bizkaia eskutik! A unique way to learn about the cultural identity of the area, pique inter-ests, and create bonds and emo-tions that will allow you to return time and again to Bizkaia by sim-ply seeing, touching, or wearing an item.

but there are always a vari-ety shops, ranging from the most traditional to shops for people with a sweet tooth, design stores, authentic shops, and peculiar shops and sellers offering authen-tic Basque products.

We’ve divided up the areas here. It’s up to you to make your route.

Guggenheim Bilbao Museum

Recognised all over the world, looking like a ship sailing through the city along the estuary, a shiny hull made of titanium and full of avant-garde art, it steals the limelight that was once reserved for Bil-bao’s industrial area. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of Frank Gehry's masterpieces, an architect known for his daring and easily recognisable designs. If you’d like to follow a cultural route fo-cused on art, you can visit the Museum of Fine Arts, a classic building with con-temporary flourishes that is home to an excellent collection of Basque and inter-national art. This is an art tour including top quality design stores and galleries.

You simply must discover the heart of Bilbao, an Old Quarter founded over 700 years ago that is the essence and em-blem of the city. This is an itinerary full of buildings and streets overflowing with tales to be told in every corner. In between purchases in the souvenir shops, creative stores and shops that have been here forever, take a look at Santiago Cathedral or the Plaza Nueva, the nerve centre of old Bil-bao, famous for its markets, small shops full of charm and, of course, its bars and restaurants. The streets of Mallona will lead you to the emblematic Basílica de Begoña. You can have a rest by sampling some of the famous pintxos accompa-nied by a young wine or a txakolí.

A reinvented building, formerly a wine warehouse that has been declared a place of cultural interest. The old façade hides an avant-garde structure fit for endless possibilities, from sports to cultural and culinary events. The project was developed with the renovation of the Alhóndiga de Bilbao. It involved a daring remodel, combining contemporary styles with the existing classical elements. The 43 columns designed by Philippe Starck with motifs symbolising the “infinity of cultures, architectures, wars and reli-gions through which man has passed throughout history”, are quite a sight to be seen.

Cross the city from east to west and apart from the sheer dominance of its buildings, it is defined by the constant movement of people shopping in the countless shops, ranging from the most traditional and well-known in the city to modern and exclusive stores. See the Provincial Council Hall built at the end of the 19th century. Further on, you’ll find Plaza Moyúa, crossed by four of the busiest and most commercial streets in the city.

San Mamés

One of the icons of the new Bilbao is San Mamés, the Athletic Club football stadium. The old stadium was erected in 1913 in the very same spot, and 100 years later a new stadium was born. The sports facility has influenced this entire part of the city; the shops, bars, restaurants, etc. all have an air of San Mamés.

Few teams in the world are so identifia-ble with their home town as Athletic. The team’s extensive list of triumphs and al-ways competing at the highest level with only Basque players makes the atmos-phere at San Mamés very special, an expe-rience that you cannot miss even if you do not consider yourself a football fan.The museum, club shop and culinary ser-vices at the stadium are all certainly in-tensely related to football and Athletic, but they also connote identity and the pride of the people

Santurtzi

An iron structure, reminiscent of the Eif-fel tower, is the point of connection be-tween Portugalete and Las Arenas at the mouth of the estuary. On one side of the estuary is the area of Biscay with heavy industry: towns such as Sestao and Bar-akaldo, as well as areas for commercial expansion home to superstores. On the right bank is the more bourgeois area; Las Arenas, Neguri and Algorta are ex-amples of this with their magnificent buildings, shops and promenades to match the setting.

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

A feature of many stories, at the end of an isthmus, you will find a hermitage that is home to the votive offerings of sailors saved at sea, models of boats as offerings and paintings depicting ves-sels on the verge of shipwreck. To get to the hermitage, you’ll have to walk across a narrow bridge and up 241 steps. Once you get there, do not forget to make a wish and ring the bell three times to make it come true and drive away evil spirits.

If any town is symbolic of Biscay and all things Basque, it has to be Gernika-Lumo. Its history, tragical-ly marred by the bombing in April 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, is the platform on which this strong town has been revived with its own identity as a symbol of Peace and freedom.

The Council House, where the Bis-cay Council Meetings are held, its Peace Foundation Museum and the Basque People Museum, the Church of Santa María and the Par-que de los Pueblos de Europa (Peo-ple of Europe Park), with sculp-tures by Chillida and Henry Moore, form part of a historic and artistic heritage that is hard to skip.

Its stalactites are truly a sight to be seen and no other cave on the planet is home to so many. This is why it was designated Best Corner of Spain in 2013. Pozalagua cave, in Karrantza, Enkarterri, has the good fortune of boasting an exclusive phenomenon: eccen-tric stalactites of whimsical shapes that, un-like conventional stalactites, which go from the top down according to the law of gravity, crystallise in any direction, intertwined as if

they were roots or coral.Nearby is the La Encartada factory museum, which was declared a Mon-

When the tide goes out, the beauty of these beaches is revealed. A curious phenomenon demonstrating the en-vironmental diversity of the region is hidden beneath the cloak of water. The rocks along the Barrika coastline stick out like sharp blades. This natural spectacle is called flysch, the result of water and sand erosion on the rock. Steps away lie Plentzia, Gorliz and Sopelana, known for being beautiful coastal villages that are excellent for surfing. If you’re after more than sport, the cuisine of the area will surely make you fall in love with this area.

The mountainous nature of the inland re-gions of Biscay is a draw for anyone who knows how to enjoy a landscape full of contrasts: high mountains, gentle hills and deep valleys in a truly rural setting. Traditional spaces full of charm include the valleys of Arratia and Orduña.Another great destination in the Basque Country is Gorbeia, where Biscay shares a natural park with the Araba-Álava re-gion. The landscape is a combination of gentle pastures and beech and oak forests with steep rocks and numerous hollows. An enjoyable outing is to the Salto del Nervión Waterfall on the border with Araba-Álava and the province of Burgos.

If you prefer culture, the inland region of Biscay is full of history, an interesting area where you will find numerous spots well worth a visit. The beauty of the environ-ment comes in addition to its monumental wealth: a landscape where nature is dis-played in all its majesty. A quintessentially Basque landscape: craggy, green and rocky, with the silhou-ette of Mount Amboto presiding over the scene. Urkiola Natural Park is a series of rocky crags, valleys and ravines, frequent-ly visited by lovers of mountaineering and trekking. The Urkiola Sanctuary is also found here. Legend has it that the sanctu-ary is a place of pilgrimage for those ur-gently seeking a partner.
